Book Surveillance of Agricultural Prices and Trade

Download or read book Surveillance of Agricultural Prices and Trade written by Alberto Vald©?s and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an independent and comprehensive review of World Bank irrigation lending and policy between 1948 and 1993. The Bank's role in irrigation lending has been large--more than $30 billion (in current U.S. dollars) spread over some 600 projects. Only 200 projects have been in place long enough to be assessed. The overall performance record is good, but there is room for improvement. The report finds that there are still pervasive problems in maintenance and operation. Operating chaos prevails in most large canal systems in the humid tropics. In drier areas, drainage is the biggest environmental problem associated with irrigation. The author argues for upgrading existing systems, improving service, involving irrigators, and saving water where it is scarce.

Book The Political Economy of Agricultural Pricing Policy Latin America

Download or read book The Political Economy of Agricultural Pricing Policy Latin America written by Anne O. Krueger and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new series of comparative studies from the World Bank examines how policies have affected agriculture in eighteen developing countries. It considers the impact of both direct policies toward agriculture and of general development policies on incentives confronting agricultural producers and on agriculture's contribution to development. It is shown that general policies can have effects even more powerful than direct policies on incentives. Price discrimination is estimated against agriculture in individual countries, how it has changed over time, and the political-economic factors that guided the evolution. The authors evaluate the effects of this price discrimination on such key macroeconomic variables as foreign exchange earnings, agricultural output, and income distribution. A full range of country experience is drawn upon to give insight into the motivations of policymakers, the economic and political factors determining agricultural interventions, and the attempts to reform unsuccessful policies.

Book Export Commodity Production and Broad Based Rural Development

Download or read book Export Commodity Production and Broad Based Rural Development written by Paul B. Siegel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An estimated 80,000-100,000 Dominican farmers produce coffee and cocoa, nearly 40 percent of all agricultural producers. The sectors also provide employment for tens of thousands of field laborers and persons employed in linked economic activities. The majority of coffee and cocoa producers are small-scale and most are located in environmentally sensitive watersheds. Recent trends in international commodity markets have challenged the survival of both sectors. Production is characterized by low yields and uneven quality, while periodic hurricanes have contributed to a lackluster and unstable record of output and exports. Despite these conditions, most experts acknowledge the fact that appropriate agro-ecological conditions exist in Dominican Republic for production of high-quality coffee and cocoa. To be competitive and sustainable, some changes must take place in the coffee and cocoa sectors. The objective of this study is to provide an overview of the coffee and cocoa sectors, to identify major problems, and to suggest possible strategies to deal with these problems. The authors conclude that if the objectives of the government are poverty reduction, environmental protection and overall well-being of rural society, it is critical to move beyond a commodity-specific approach to a broader rural development focus on households, regions and environments where coffee and cocoa are currently being grown.

Book Economic Crisis and Policy Choice

Download or read book Economic Crisis and Policy Choice written by Joan M. Nelson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The acute economic pressures of the 1980s have forced virtually all of Latin America and Africa and some countries in Asia into painful austerity programs and difficult economic reforms. Scholars have intensively analyzed the economics of this situation, but they have given much less attention to the political forces involved. In this volume a number of eminent contributors analyze the politics of adjustment in thirteen countries and nineteen governments, drawing comparisons not only across the full set of cases but also within clusters selected to clarify specific issues. Why do some governments respond promptly to signs of economic trouble, while others muddle indecisively for years? Why do some confine their response to temporary macroeconomic measures, while others adopt broader, even sweeping, programs of reform? What leads some countries to experiment with heterodox approaches, while most, however reluctantly, pursue orthodox courses? Why, confronted with intense political protest, have some governments persisted while others have altered or abandoned course? The answers to these questions are political, not economic, and they are examined here by Thomas M. Callaghy, Stephan Haggard, Miles Kahler, Robert R. Kauman, Joan M. Nelson, and Barbara Stallings.
