Antecedent to the establishment of the Resettlement Administration, the Alabama State Rural Rehabilitation Corporation had bought acres of land in scattered tracts throughout the county. The control of this land, together with a rather extensive rural rehabilitation program, made it pos sible for the Resettlement Administration to take substantial steps toward the reorientation of the population and the social institutions to the lands of the county. Complete and hearty Oooperation of all county and State agencies edu catichal, health, welfare, and agricultural was readily secured. This social study has been carried on, therefore, as a Oooperative enterprise be tween these local and State agencies, the Regional Office of the Resettlement Administration at Birmingham, Alabama, and the Social Research Section of the Washington Office, Resettlement Administration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Richard Hurdis: Tale of Alabama Richard hurdis was singularly successful with the public in spite of much hostile criticism. It was objected, to the story, that it was of too gloomy and savage a character. But the en tire aspect of a sparsely-settled forest, or mountain country, is grave and saddening, even where society is stationary and consistent; and, where society is only in process of formation the saddening and the grave in its aspect are but too apt to take on even sterner features, and to grow into the gloomy and ferocious. It is quite enough, in answer to the objection, to say that the general protraiture is not only a truthful one, in the present case, but that the materials are really of histor ical character. The story is a genuine chronicle of the border region where the scene is laid, and of the period when the date is fixed. Its action, throughout, is founded on well-known facts. Its personages were real, living men; being, doing, and suffer ing, as here reported. Nothing has been extenuate, nothing has been set down in malice. A softer coloring might. Have been employed, and, more frequently, scenes of repose might have been introduced for relieving the intense and fierce aspects of the story; but these would have been out of place in a narrative so dramatic of cast, and where the action is so rapid. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Correspondence Respecting the "Alabama" I have the honour to transmit copies of six depositions taken at Liverpool, tending to establish the character and destination of the vessel to which I called your Lordship's attention in my note of the 23rd of June last. The originals of these papers have already been submitted to the Collector of the Customs at that port, in accordance with the suggestions made in your Lordship's note to me of the 4th of July, as the basis of an application to him to act under the powers conferred by the Enlistment Act. But I feel it to be my duty further to communicate the facts as there alleged to Her Majesty's Government, and to request that 'such further proceedings may be had as may carry into full effect the determination which I doubt not it ever entertains to prevent, by all lawful means, the fitting out of hostile expeditions against the Government of a country with which it is at peace. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alabama Sketches Dan Groby, the negro sexton, knew more of the unquiet pastorate of the Rev. Mr. Crofton than any one at Oakville. Vibrating in his daily duties between the church and the rectory, he lived in the thick of the fight. It was on the forenoon of the day before Easter that Dan, leaning on his broom in front of the church door, narrated to me the events which had occurred during my long absence. "Hit do look peaceful, don't it, sah?" said Dan, gazing up at the little Gothic structure with moss-grown roof shaded by great water-oaks, in whose ivy-draped boughs mocking birds builded and sang perennially. "Dat vine dar's growed a heap since you went away." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
