Newspapers echo accounts of desperate gamblers, prostitutes and prospectors who did everything they could to secure their own future--at all costs. Town druggist Mr. Salis Smith concocted medicine composed of 50 percent alcohol mixed with cocaine or opium for the despondent. Characters like Bootleg Mary or murderous Fatty Carroll, notorious for employing shallow graves, populate dark tales of hushed murders, illegal gambling and corrupt politics. She moves out of her brick house and heads west. In Boulder, Colorado, she meets Robb, an artist. Together they join the back-to-the land movement. Her family condemns her. Her friends shake their heads. She vows to write down every detail so they will understand the importance of embracing radical simplicity and perhaps join her. This is a chronicle of survival skills and personal growth, an odyssey through the unexpected. We visit a little-examined period in Idaho history through the voice of Nancy's journal and letters, and stay with her until she lands in a small house on Second Street, a single mother, in an Idaho town.

Book Superfund and Mining Megasites

Download or read book Superfund and Mining Megasites written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-29 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 100 years, the Coeur d' Alene River Basin has been known as "The Silver Valley" for being one of the most productive silver, lead, and zinc mining areas in the United States. Over time, high levels of metals (including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and zinc) were discovered in the local environment and elevated blood lead levels were found in children in communities near the metal-refining and smelter complex. In 1983, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) listed a 21-square mile mining area in northern Idaho as a Superfund site. EPA extended those boundaries in 1998 to include areas throughout the 1500-square mile area Coeur d'Alene River Basin project area. Under Superfund, EPA has developed a plan to clean up the contaminated area that will cost an estimated $359 million over 3 decades-and this effort is only the first step in the cleanup process. Superfund and Mining Megasites: Lessons from Coeur d'Alene River Basin evaluates the issues and concerns that have been raised regarding EPA's decisions about cleaning up the area. The scientific and technical practices used by EPA to make decisions about human health risks at the Coeur d'Alene River Basin Superfund site are generally sound; however, there are substantial concerns regarding environmental protection decisions, particularly dealing with the effectiveness of long-term plans.

Download or read book Coeur D alene written by Linnea Larsson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-07-25 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coeur dAlene is a city on the north end of Coeur dAlene Lake, a hundred miles from the Canadian border. In 1930, prohibition was in force, and the mines to the east and logging camps to the south were filled with men who were paid on Saturday night and where a fellow was served at a bar if he was tall enough to order across it. Grag Bergman, a widower and father of two, was a banker in Coeur dAlene. Gary Madison brought whiskey across the border from Canada, owned a few clubs, supplied red-light establishments, the police, doctors, lawyers, bankers, and private citizens. This is a story of that special time of probation, of Depression, a time between world wars in that special part of the north Idaho, where homesteads were still new and civilization as we know it today was only a dream.
