Book excerpt: An instant #1 New York Times bestseller! This “timely and compelling” (Kirkus Reviews) middle grade novel about courage, hope, and resilience follows an Asian American boy fighting to keep his family together and stand up to racism during the initial outbreak of the coronavirus. When the coronavirus hits Hong Kong, ten-year-old Knox Wei-Evans’s mom makes the last-minute decision to move him and his siblings back to California, where they think they will be safe. Suddenly, Knox has two days to prepare for an international move—and for leaving his dad, who has to stay for work. At his new school in California, Knox struggles with being the new kid. His classmates think that because he’s from Asia, he must have brought over the virus. At home, Mom just got fired and is panicking over the loss of health insurance, and Dad doesn’t even know when he’ll see them again, since the flights have been cancelled. And everyone struggles with Knox’s blurting-things-out problem. As racism skyrockets during COVID-19, Knox tries to stand up to hate, while finding his place in his new country. Can you belong if you’re feared; can you protect if you’re new? And how do you keep a family together when you’re oceans apart? Sometimes when the world is spinning out of control, the best way to get through it is to embrace our own lovable uniqueness.

Book Teosinte

  • Release : 2013-05
  • ISBN : 1622121716
  • Pages : 485 pages

Download or read book Teosinte written by Karen Chertok and published by Strategic Book Publishing. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teosinte began as a series of poems and then merged with the symbolism of Regina Szczypiorski's art. It is structured on the seven days and nights of the Mayan Underworld. A parallel story emerged with the author's diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in December 2010. This book is an honest account of one woman processing the system of cancer treatment in our country. It was written in the form of poetry and journals over a period of ten years, culminating with the assertion of a new myth; a myth that responds to the common theme of the phoenix across cultures and traditions; a myth that states the phoenix has landed, built her nest, burned and flew ... and now it's time to move forward. "After a less than ideal childhood and a difficult adult life, being hit with cancer did not make sense to me. I knew as soon as I was diagnosed I would write a book. My oldest son asked me if I thought about reading some self-help/survivor stories and I replied to him, 'No, I'm writing one.' That was Christmas Day 2010."

Book excerpt: "None of us is likely to forget the 'virustime,' but feisty, funny, resourceful, creative Arden (along with her quirky family and motley crew of rescue dogs) is a comforting and inspiring reminder that the worst of times can bring out the best in us. Ark will help young readers see how they, too, kindled their own light to find their way through a dark time." —Lauren Wolk, author of Echo Mountain "Infectiously hopeful."—Kirkus Reviews Arden thinks the world has ended when her parents decide to trade their large house (where she has her own purple bedroom with a window seat!) for a small backyard guesthouse, built like a wooden boat. The worst part: it’s not big enough for their dog to come along. Things get even worse when her best friend moves away and a pandemic shuts school, leaving Arden’s family quarantined in very little space. Arden just wishes life would go back to normal. As neighbors leave town, shut themselves away, and get sick, their pets are left behind, and Arden becomes the safe-keeper of all the abandoned animals. When the pandemic touches home, Arden must use all her creativity and courage to help those she loves—family, friends, and dogs! Ark was inspired by author Elisabeth Sharp McKetta’s experience of living in a 275-square-foot tiny house with her husband and two children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like Arden, Elisabeth’s family learned to live large in a small space.

Book Fan the Fame

Download or read book Fan the Fame written by Anna Priemaza and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2019-08-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes before you can build something up, you have to burn it down. Fans of Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl and Jennifer Mathieu’s Moxie will fall in love with this fiercely crafted YA novel about followers, fame, and fighting for what’s right. Lainey wouldn’t mind lugging a camera around a video game convention for her mega-famous brother, aka YouTube streamer Codemeister, except for one big problem. He’s funny and charming online, but behind closed doors, Cody is a sexist jerk. SamTheBrave came to this year’s con with one mission: meeting Codemeister—because getting his idol’s attention could be the big break Sam needs. ShadowWillow is already a successful streamer. But when her fans start shipping her with Code, Shadow concocts a plan to turn the rumors to her advantage. The three teens’ paths collide when Lainey records one of Cody’s hateful rants on video and decides to spill the truth to her brother’s fans—even if that means putting Sam and Shadow in the crosshairs. Told through three relatable voices, this contemporary YA novel from the author of the widely praised Kat and Meg Conquer the World skillfully balances feminism, accountability, and doing the right thing—even when it hurts.

Book Negotiating Opportunities

Download or read book Negotiating Opportunities written by Jessica McCrory Calarco and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Negotiating Opportunities, Jessica McCrory Calarco argues that the middle class has a negotiated advantage in school. Drawing on five years of ethnographic fieldwork, Calarco traces that negotiated advantage from its origins at home to its consequences at school. Through their parents' coaching, working-class students learn to follow rules and work through problems independently. Middle-class students learn to challenge rules and request assistance, accommodations, and attention in excess of what is fair or required. Teachers typically grant those requests, creating advantages for middle-class students. Calarco concludes with recommendations, advocating against deficit-oriented programs that teach middle-class behaviors to working-class students. Those programs ignore the value of working-class students' resourcefulness, respect, and responsibility, and they do little to prevent middle-class families from finding new opportunities to negotiate advantages in school.

Book Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air and Other Stories

Download or read book Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air and Other Stories written by Jeff Fearnside and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Love While Levitating Three Feet in the Air: And Other Stories’s 13 short stories are linked thematically by the recurring idea of flight, in its various definitions and senses. The characters are sometimes in flight from their situations, sometimes from other people, sometimes from themselves. Stories range from contemporary to historical, from realistic to magical realist. The known and the unknown often blur as the characters struggle to understand the unseen forces that move them. Ultimately, the crises that all the characters encounter are psychological or spiritual in some way, however each may define that; as the title of the collection suggests, the characters find themselves levitating somewhere between their deepest desires and an exquisite and terrifying nothingness. No one in these stories “wins” in the traditional sense; there are no tidy answers. But the stories are subtly life affirming in how each character deals with the difficulties of life. Each learns something about himself or herself, however fleeting that knowledge may be, however small a step forward it inspires. Life isn’t static, and neither are these people.

Book Hero Dogs

Download or read book Hero Dogs written by Wilma Melville and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lola was a buckshot-riddled stray, lost on a Memphis highway. Cody was rejected from seven different homes. Ace had been sprayed with mace and left for dead on a train track. They were deemed unadoptable. Untrainable. Unsalvageable. These would become the same dogs America relied on when its worst disasters hit. In 1995, Wilma Melville volunteered as a canine search-and-rescue (SAR) handler with her Black Labrador Murphy in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing. At the time, there were only fifteen FEMA certified SAR dogs in the United States. Believing in the value of these remarkable animals to help save lives, Wilma knew many more were needed in the event of future major disasters. She made a vow to help 168 dogs receive search-and-rescue training in her lifetime—one for every Oklahoma City victim. Wilma singlehandedly established the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation (SDF) to meet this challenge. The first canine candidates—Ana, Dusty, and Harley—were a trio of golden retrievers with behavioral problems so severe the dogs were considered irredeemable and unadoptable. But with patience, discipline, and love applied during training, they proved to have the ability, agility, and stamina to graduate as SARs. Paired with a trio of firefighters, they were among the first responders searching the ruins of the World Trade Center following 9/11—setting the standard for the more than 168 of the SDF’s search-and-rescue dogs that followed. Beautiful and heart-wrenching, Hero Dogs is the story of one woman’s dream brought to fruition by dedicated volunteers and firefighters—and the bonds they forged with the incredible rescued-turned-rescuer dogs to create one of America’s most vital resources in disaster response.

Their families claim it’s because they were born within minutes of each other. They've declared one truce in their lives—when Cody's father was KIA overseas. Neither of them expected there would be another, but when Cody suspects a crash of his test drone spooked Britt’s champion barrel racing horse, endangering her life and future, he calls a second truce. Forced together, they learn surprising things about each other neither ever knew. He’s the Cowboy she fell in love with… and the same man who left her at the altar years ago. Sierra Baxter’s life was thrown into turmoil when the man she loved bolted out of her life years ago. Since the day he left, she has worked hard to give her son the security he needs. She’s found love and acceptance from family and friends in their small town. When the town council volunteers Sierra to be the host of Refuge Mountain’s yearly Christmas Fair, she agrees. But, the day her ex-fiancé suddenly returns to their small town, the town council eagerly chooses him as her co-host. Sierra worries knowing the secret she’s hidden from him for the past six years is about to be uncovered. Denver Callahan returns home filled with regret at how he messed things up between them. He’d been far too young and made the worst mistake of his life when he left Sierra on the day he was supposed to marry her years ago. Everything had spiralled out of control back then and he wasn’t mature or wise enough to do the right thing. In truth, he didn’t start out with plans to become a famous Country Music Singer. He’d just written songs on the side, pouring himself into his music, when one day — shortly before his wedding day — his talent was discovered. Years ago, he chose the love of music over his first love. But, he’d never forgotten her — the scent of her or her beautiful smile. Now that he’d returned, it looked like they would be forced together, co-hosting their small town’s Christmas Fair. Seeing the woman he loves once more, Denver’s attraction to her is stronger than ever. But, years of neglect and betrayal sit in between them like unbreakable walls. Maybe it’s too much to hope that Sierra would forgive him for the pain and heartache he’s caused her. But, Denver’s determined to ask for forgiveness anyway. Will Denver pick up his cowboy hat and cowboy boots and return home to stay? Can he convince Sierra that he will choose her this time... his first and forever love?
