Jill McCabe, MD, FAAP President, Medical Staff Medical Director, Pediatric Emergency Inova Loudoun Hospital “Emily and Dr. Nachos do an outstanding job of explaining what it is like to live with Type 1 Diabetes. Not only do they make the medical aspect easy to understand for all ages, they also explain the importance of working as a team.” Lindsey Waldman MD, RD Pediatric Specialists of Virginia “This book struck a chord with me because, when I was a young woman navigating the murky waters of type 1 diabetes, a part of me began to believe that I would never be healthy or strong. I believed that feeling good would never be in the cards for me; that I was doomed to a life of feeling badly with up and down blood sugars. That was, until I met an adult woman living successfully with the disease. She lived her best life, in spite of the challenges of this disease, and it inspired me beyond measure. Empowerment is the message at the heart of this book and it is what we should be teaching all our children and teenagers with type 1 diabetes. They deserve to be healthy and happy, now and for the rest of their lives, and they have the power to do it. I will be pleased to share this book with all the patients and families I work with.” Emily Viall BSN, RN, CDE Endocrine Nurse/Certified Diabetes Educator Pediatric Specialists of Virginia

Today is the day to start living your life with diabetes, instead of trying to live around it, and “How To Live with Type 1 Diabetes” is here to help. About the Expert Corey Reese was diagnosed as a type 1 diabetic in 2004. Having been hospitalized many times before discovering his illness, he is very experienced in being aware of, and remedying blood-glucose problems. His philosophy is that the most important thing a diabetic needs to understand is not how to treat their illness, but how to live with their bodies to the best of their abilities. Corey has since been trying to find new ideas and ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle without having to completely change himself as a person. He's found living life “pro-actively instead of reactively” to be a difficult but rewarding experience. Corey Reese's thought on living life with type 1 diabetes is that “the biggest obstacle to break through is seeing diabetes as just a label instead of a character trait, or personality defect. Once you realize that your illness is not just something to watch and fear, but also something to control and maintain, the door to healthier and more meaningful living will be opened to you.” HowExpert publishes quick 'how to' guides on all topics from A to Z by everyday experts.

Book 101 Tips for Parents of Kids with Diabetes

Download or read book 101 Tips for Parents of Kids with Diabetes written by Jeff Hitchcock and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 208,000 Americans under age twenty have diagnosed diabetes, and the number is growing at an alarming rate. From 2001 to 2009, the number of American children diagnosed with type 1 diabetes rose 23 percent; for type 2 diabetes it rose 21 percent. While scientists and government organizations assess the reasons for the increase, parents are left to deal with its day-to-day ramifications, and to guide their children through the discovery and treatment process. Jeff Hitchcock, the editor of this volume, was in desperate need of advice for how to best support his young daughter after her diagnosis. When he searched for support, he was shocked by how little information existed. So he started his own support group, Children with Diabetes. And now, more than twenty years later, Children with Diabetes has answered more than twenty thousand questions from other parents, gets more than twenty thousand daily hits on its website, and has a highly respected Diabetes Team, a wealth of on-call experts for parents in need of support. In this volume, Jeff has collected a whopping 101 tips for parents. The tips answer questions such as: What does the diagnosis mean? How do I get help? Should I change my child’s eating habits? What does insulin mean, and how is it used? And what should I tell my child’s teacher? For ease of reference, they’re categorized, so answers can quickly and easily be found. They’re also provided in simple, jargon-free, and easy-to-understand language.

This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I can help take care of me" is a poetic introduction for children to life with diabetes. The book goes through the standard methods of care that a child will be living with, demonstrates how the equipment works and what it does. The book should help a child to see that his diagnosis is not the end of the world and is something that he'll live and work with. The book is also an excellent teaching tool for other family members, teachers, classmates and others who the child will be interacting with that need some knowledge of the condition. I've been a type one diabetic almost all of my life. I was diagnosed at age two and have lived with it for the last 54 and a half years. I've been using an insulin pump and glucose testing for thirty five years and have had a continuous glucose sensor for the last eighteen years. I've written this book to help children diagnosed with type 1 learn the "basics" of their new life. It begins with the child's diagnosis, gives simple explanations of what type 1 diabetes is (Sugar can't get into a cell without insulin, which acts like a key in a lock) and then proceeds to show meters, pumps and CGMS sensors (and why we use them). My aim is to familiarize the child with the hardware and issues that he will be living with, but NOT to be a medical book. I am NOT working with dosing or carb counting or other specific medical issues (as these must be handled by the medical team as well as the age of the child) but try to explain in simple terms why amounts and types of food are important to their health.
