Book excerpt: A wireless relay network consists of multiple source nodes, multiple destination nodes, and possibly many relay nodes in between to facilitate its transmission. It is clear that the performance of such networks highly depends on information forwarding strategies adopted at the relay nodes. This dissertation studies a particular information forwarding strategy called compute-and-forward. Compute-and-forward is a novel paradigm that tries to incorporate the idea of network coding within the physical layer and hence is often referred to as physical layer network coding. The main idea is to exploit the superposition nature of the wireless medium to directly compute or decode functions of transmitted signals at intermediate relays in a network. Thus, the coding performed at the physical layer serves the purpose of error correction as well as permits recovery of functions of transmitted signals. For the bidirectional relaying problem with Gaussian channels, it has been shown by Wilson et al. and Nam et al. that the compute-and-forward paradigm is asymptotically optimal and achieves the capacity region to within 1 bit; however, similar results beyond the memoryless case are still lacking. This is mainly because channels with memory would destroy the lattice structure that is most crucial for the compute-and-forward paradigm. Hence, how to extend compute-and-forward to such channels has been a challenging issue. This motivates this study of the extension of compute-and-forward to channels with memory, such as inter-symbol interference. The bidirectional relaying problem with parallel Gaussian channels is also studied, which is a relevant model for the Gaussian bidirectional channel with inter-symbol interference and that with multiple-input multiple-output channels. Motivated by the recent success of linear finite-field deterministic model, we first investigate the corresponding deterministic parallel bidirectional relay channel and fully characterize its capacity region. Two compute-and-forward schemes are then proposed for the Gaussian model and the capacity region is approximately characterized to within a constant gap. The design of coding schemes for the compute-and-forward paradigm with low decoding complexity is then considered. Based on the separation-based framework proposed previously by Tunali et al., this study proposes a family of constellations that are suitable for the compute-and-forward paradigm. Moreover, by using Chinese remainder theorem, it is shown that the proposed constellations are isomorphic to product fields and therefore can be put into a multilevel coding framework. This study then proposes multilevel coding for the proposed constellations and uses multistage decoding to further reduce decoding complexity. First, since the received power decreases rapidly with distance, the idea of multi-hopping is becoming of particular importance. In multi-hopped communication, the source exploits some intermediate nodes as relays. Then the source sends its message via those relays to the destination. Second, relays can emulate some kind of distributed transmit antennas to form spatial diversity and combat multi-path fading effect of the wireless channel. Parallel Relay Channel is an information theoretical model for a communication system whereby a sender aims to communicate to a receiver with the help of relay nodes. It represents the simplest model for a multi-hop wireless network and a full understanding of the limits of communication over such a channel can potentially shed light on the design of more efficient wireless networks. However, the capacity of the relay channel has been established only for few special cases and little progress has been made toward solving the general case since the early 1980s. In this dissertation, motivated by practical constraints, we study the information theoretical limits of the half-duplex Gaussian Parallel Relay channel, as well as, the transmission strategies for the parallel relay channel with bandwidth mismatch between the first and the second hops. Chapter 2 investigates the problem of communication for a network composed of two half-duplex parallel relays with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). There is no direct link between the source and the destination. However, the relays can communicate with each other through the channel between them. Two protocols, i.e. Simultaneous and Successive relaying, associated with two possible relay scheduling are proposed. The simultaneous relaying protocol is based on Broadcast-multiaccess with Common Message (BCM) scheme. For the successive relaying protocol: (i) a Non-Cooperative scheme based on the Dirty Paper Coding (DPC), and (ii) a Cooperative scheme based on the Block Markov Encoding (BME) are considered. The composite scheme of employing BME in at most one relay and DPC in at least another one is shown to achieve at least the same rate when compared to the Cooperative and Non-Cooperative schemes.

We study the universality both in terms of the uncertainty in the relative quality of the two sub-channels for a fixed maximum rate, C*, and in terms of the uncertainty of the achievable maximum rate. In our architecture, we will convert the parallel Gaussian channel into a set of scalar Gaussian channels and use good base codes designed for the corresponding scalar channel in the coding schemes. In Chapter 2, a universal layered code with deterministic dithers is developed. The code is repeated across the two sub-channels with possibly different dithers. Symbols in each of the layer codewords can be combined using unitary transformations of dimension, m. A minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receiver combined with successive cancellation is used for decoding. We show that increasing m does not improve the efficiency. The efficiency increases by adding more layers up to a certain number and after that it saturates. We find an expression for this saturation efficiency. We show that partial CSIT improves the efficiency significantly. At the end we compare the performance of maximal ratio combining (MRC) and MMSE receivers and show that they are close in the coding scheme with no CSIT. In Chapter 3, we design an alternative universal code and extend it to be rateless. This is a sub-block structured code symmetric with respect to all layers that gets repeated across the two sub-channels and in time using i.i.d. Bernoulli (1/2) dithers. The decoder uses an MRC receiver combined with successive cancellation. We prove that in the limit of large L when L is increased exponentially with C*, the code is capacity achieving. We perform efficiency analyses when L is scaled linearly with C* and derive upper and lower bounds on the efficiency. We also show that the scheme has high efficiencies for practical ranges of C* using a low-rate good base code. We discuss the unknown time-varying behavior of the scheme and at the end briefly discuss the use of faster than Nyquist signaling to enable the scheme to have a high efficiency for higher C* values.
