Book excerpt: Since its introduction in Yao's seminal paper [Yao79], communication complexity has revolutionized theoretical computer science. Indeed, not only has communication complexity been successful in areas where communication is an important resource, but it has also resulted in breakthroughs in areas that seemingly have nothing to do with communication! This is because bounds on communication can often be translated into bounds on other resources of interest, such as memory usage and circuit size.As the title suggests, we consider the role of communication complexity in the study of three different areas in theoretical computer science:Coding: Part I is about interactive error correcting codes, used to make interactive protocols resilient to noise. I study the noise tolerance of popular two-party and multi-party communication channels, constructing communication efficient codes with high noise tolerance for some of these channels, and proving that noise tolerance implies large communication overheads for others.Commerce: Part II studies communication problems in auction design, where the participating parties have their own interests and may not follow the protocol unless incentivized to do so. A common theme of this part is establishing tight separations between different classes of auctions, and understanding how various aspects of an auction affect its communication complexity.Currents: Part III covers my work on the memory requirement of graph streaming algorithms, which are algorithms whose input is a massive graph that they can only scan a few times. While algorithms that scan their input once are by now well understood, the situation is different for multi-pass streaming algorithms, which are the focus of this part of the thesis.Interestingly, each of these areas imposes additional requirements on the classical model of communication complexity: in interactive coding, we study communication complexity under noise; in auction design, we study communication complexity with incentives; and in multi-pass streaming, we consider communication complexity with few rounds of communication. While these three topics are seemingly very different, they all have strong connections with communication complexity, and studying them together often leads to deep insights.

Book excerpt: In interactive coding, Alice and Bob wish to compute some function f of their individual private inputs x and y. They do this by engaging in a non-adaptive (fixed order, fixed length) interactive protocol to jointly compute f(x,y). The goal is to do this in an error-resilient way, such that even given some fraction of adversarial corruptions to the protocol, both parties still learn f(x,y). We study the optimal error resilience of such a protocol in the face of adversarial bit flips or erasures. While the optimal error resilience of such a protocol over a large alphabet is well understood, the situation over the binary alphabet has remained open. Over the binary alphabet, there has remained a substantial gap in error resilience between the best protocol construction and the best known upper bound, for both bit flips and erasures. In this thesis, we construct protocols meeting the known upper bounds for both types of errors, thereby closing this gap and resolving the question of optimal error resilience for binary channels. Our schemes for both types of errors have positive rate and are computationally efficient.

The algorithms are developed within a single framework, termed the compressed-error-cancellation framework, where data are sent via a sequence of messages: the first message contains the original data; each subsequent message contains a source-coded description of the channel distortions introduced on the message preceding it. Coding for Channels with Feedback provides an easily understood and flexible framework for deriving low-complexity, practical solutions to a wide variety of feedback communication problems. It is shown that the compressed-error-cancellation framework leads to coding schemes with the lowest possible asymptotic order of growth of computations and can be applied to discrete memoryless channels, finite state channels, channels with memory, unknown channels, and multiple-access channels, all with complete noiseless feedback, as well as to channels with partial and noisy feedback. This framework leads to coding strategies that have linear complexity and are capacity achieving, and illustrates the intimate connection between source coding theory and channel coding theory. Coding for Channels with Feedback is an excellent reference for researchers and communication engineers in the field of information theory, and can be used for advanced courses on the topic.
