John King, a young academic, is approached by his Oxbridge mentor to participate in a stunning deception that would frustrate Britain's enemies. Book excerpt: WINNER –NEWSPAPER HOUSE LITERARY AWARD – 2012 Security arrangements for a visit to Australia by the US Secretary of State are made under the watchful eye of a beautiful Australian diplomat, stationed in Washington. As the jet carrying the US officials enters Australian air space, intelligence services intercept a coded message, setting alarm bells ringing and prompting a national security operation. All the signs point towards Islamic terrorists. Tom Grant, a rugged, highly decorated Australian SAS Commander just back from Afghanistan, leads a frantic mission to hunt down the suspects. As the gap between the fugitives and their hunters closes, a cruel twist emerges, challenging credulity and threatening a highly explosive international incident. ““Nowhere in the Qur’an is there an exhortation to kill. That is just the Mantra of xenophobic westerners wanting to discredit Islam. Indeed, Chapter 17: Verse 70 of the Q’uran makes interesting reading. It states: ‘Respect and honour all human beings irrespective of their religion, colour, race, sex, language, status, property, birth or profession’”. “In that instant, Sentinel’s eyes assumed a puzzled look ... then a look of surprise and finally ... of horror, as he realised he was going to die. The bullet had punched through Sentinel’s soft tissue, entering his cranial cavity and exploding out of the side of his face ....” A masterful narrative, by a master story-teller. “Riveting realism. Riveting suspense-from a master story-teller”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hawk Hunter is back—in the bestselling military adventure series by “the best high-action thriller writer out there today, bar none” (Jon Land). With nearly a quarter of million copies sold, this high-octane series features Hawk Hunter, a fearless fighter pilot who saves the not-so-distant-future United States from the brink of all-out anarchy. Skyfire: In the chaos that followed the end of World War III, Maj. Hawk Hunter took refuge in the arms of a woman named Dominique. But Hunter’s campaign soon tore them apart, and he was forced to send her to Canada, where his enemies claimed Dominique as their own. Drugged, tortured, and imprisoned, she waits helplessly—praying for his return. But while Hunter embarks on a daring raid to rescue his beloved, another threat is coming—in the sleek black nuclear submarines now steaming toward the eastern seaboard, whose warheads threaten everything Hunter is fighting to rebuild. Return from the Inferno: Just as America is beginning to recover from nuclear war, her enemies attack again. As ace pilot Hawk Hunter battles the horde of Nordic mercenaries who have ravaged the East Coast, another army lands in California: the combined forces of the dictatorships of East Asia. The Second Axis is here. Hunter leads the charge, flying his famous red, white, and blue F-16 into the invasion’s maw. But this is the first time the Wingman does not come out the other side. Their champion gone, America’s soldiers carry on, engaging in guerilla warfare to protect the country’s interior, keeping hope alive that Hunter is out there somewhere, planning a counterattack. War of the Sun: An army of cultish mercenaries from East Asia has seized the West Coast, conquering territory as far east as the Rocky Mountains—all in the name of Hashi Pushi, a Japanese despot revered as a god. With the support of two submarines patrolling the Pacific, each armed with a nuclear warhead, the invaders have promised that any counterattack will result in the annihilation of two American cities—a price the battle-scarred populace is not prepared to pay. Onboard the carrier Enterprise, Hunter prepares to strike. His target is not the submarines, but Tokyo itself, where his fellow pilots will attack this warrior cult from the top down. The Ghost War: A pilot patrolling the South Pacific discovers Xmas Island is nothing more than a blackened hole in the ground. The carnage was wreaked by a battleship armed with an array of sixteen-inch cannons that, in a matter of minutes, could obliterate any city on earth. As far as Maj. Hawk Hunter is concerned, that constitutes a direct threat to the West Coast—a threat he must neutralize personally.

Book Raising Lazarus

Download or read book Raising Lazarus written by Beth Macy and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2022-08-16 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “deeply reported, deeply moving” (Patrick Radden Keefe) account of everyday heroes fighting on the front lines of the overdose crisis, from the New York Times bestselling author of Dopesick (inspiration for the Peabody Award-winning Hulu limited series) and Factory Man. Nearly a decade into the second wave of America's overdose crisis, pharmaceutical companies have yet to answer for the harms they created. As pending court battles against opioid makers, distributors, and retailers drag on, addiction rates have soared to record-breaking levels during the COVID pandemic, illustrating the critical need for leadership, urgency, and change. Meanwhile, there is scant consensus between law enforcement and medical leaders, nor an understanding of how to truly scale the programs that are out there, working at the ragged edge of capacity and actually saving lives. Distilling this massive, unprecedented national health crisis down to its character-driven emotional core as only she can, Beth Macy takes us into the country’s hardest hit places to witness the devastating personal costs that one-third of America's families are now being forced to shoulder. Here we meet the ordinary people fighting for the least of us with the fewest resources, from harm reductionists risking arrest to bring lifesaving care to the homeless and addicted to the activists and bereaved families pushing to hold Purdue and the Sackler family accountable. These heroes come from all walks of life; what they have in common is an up-close and personal understanding of addiction that refuses to stigmatize—and therefore abandon—people who use drugs, as big pharma execs and many politicians are all too ready to do. Like the treatment innovators she profiles, Beth Macy meets the opioid crisis where it is—not where we think it should be or wish it was. Bearing witness with clear eyes, intrepid curiosity, and unfailing empathy, she brings us the crucial next installment in the story of the defining disaster of our era, one that touches every single one of us, whether directly or indirectly. A complex story of public health, big pharma, dark money, politics, race, and class that is by turns harrowing and heartening, infuriating and inspiring, Raising Lazarus is a must-read for all Americans.

Book Dark Alliance

Download or read book Dark Alliance written by Gary Webb and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major Motion Picture based on Dark Alliance and starring Jeremy Renner, "Kill the Messenger," to be be released in Fall 2014 In August 1996, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Gary Webb stunned the world with a series of articles in the San Jose Mercury News reporting the results of his year-long investigation into the roots of the crack cocaine epidemic in America, specifically in Los Angeles. The series, titled “Dark Alliance,” revealed that for the better part of a decade, a Bay Area drug ring sold tons of cocaine to Los Angeles street gangs and funneled millions in drug profits to the CIA-backed Nicaraguan Contras. Gary Webb pushed his investigation even further in his book, Dark Alliance: The CIA, The Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. Drawing from then newly declassified documents, undercover DEA audio and videotapes that had never been publicly released, federal court testimony, and interviews, Webb demonstrates how our government knowingly allowed massive amounts of drugs and money to change hands at the expense of our communities. Webb’s own stranger-than-fiction experience is also woven into the book. His excoriation by the media—not because of any wrongdoing on his part, but by an insidious process of innuendo and suggestion that in effect blamed Webb for the implications of the story—had been all but predicted. Webb was warned off doing a CIA expose by a former Associated Press journalist who lost his job when, years before, he had stumbled onto the germ of the “Dark Alliance” story. And though Internal investigations by both the CIA and the Justice Department eventually vindicated Webb, he had by then been pushed out of the Mercury News and gone to work for the California State Legislature Task Force on Government Oversight. He died in 2004.

Book John a Postmodern Gospel

Download or read book John a Postmodern Gospel written by Patrick Chatelion Counet and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the postmodern philosophy of language as developed mainly by French authors as R. Barthes, J. Derrida and J.-F. Lyotard. The four chapters of the first part are theoretical and relate the literary concepts of postmodernity, poststructuralism and deconstruction to the practice of biblical exegesis. One of the important conclusions is that deconstruction affects both diachronic and synchronic approaches of texts. Each chapter closes with -not suggestions but- implications for a postmodern, deconstructive strategy of reading. The four chapters of the second part apply this postmodern, deconstructive strategy of reading to the Fourth Gospel as a whole (chapter five), to John 6 (chapter six), to John 17 (chapter seven) and to John 21, 24-25 (chapter eight). This deconstructive reading shows the differential and apophatic character of Saint John's Gospel.
