The second part starts with an overview of the OFDM receiver, and develops various modules for the receiver design in systems with single or multiple transmitters. This is the main body of the book. Extensive experimental data sets are used to verify the receiver performance. In the third part, the authors discuss applications of the OFDM receiver in i) deep water channels, which may contain very long separated multipath clusters, ii) interference-rich environments, where an unintentional interference such as Sonar will be present, and iii) a network with multiple users where both non-cooperative and cooperative underwater communications are developed. Lastly, it describes the development of a positioning system with OFDM waveforms, and the progress on the OFDM modem development. Closely related industries include the development and manufacturing of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) and scientific sensory equipment. Book Cooperative OFDM Underwater Acoustic Communications

Download or read book Cooperative OFDM Underwater Acoustic Communications written by Xilin Cheng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-03 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following underwater acoustic channel modeling, this book investigates the relationship between coherence time and transmission distances. It considers the power allocation issues of two typical transmission scenarios, namely short-range transmission and medium-long range transmission. For the former scenario, an adaptive system is developed based on instantaneous channel state information. The primary focus is on cooperative dual-hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).This book includes the decomposed fountain codes designed to enable reliable communications with higher energy efficiency. It covers the Doppler Effect, which improves packet transmission reliability for effective low-complexity mirror-mapping-based intercarrier interference cancellation schemes capable of suppressing the intercarrier interference power level. Designed for professionals and researchers in the field of underwater acoustic communications, this book is also suitable for advanced-level students in electrical engineering or computer science.

Book Space frequency Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing for Underwater Acoustic Communications

Download or read book Space frequency Coded Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing for Underwater Acoustic Communications written by Eduard Valera Zorita and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes an adaptive receiver for the space-frequency block coding scheme, in which Alamouti coding is applied over the carriers of an OFDM system with the aim of obtaining transmit diversity in an underwater acoustic channel. The receiver relies on the assumption that the channel transfer function does not change much over two consecutive carriers, and that the channel is slowly time-varying. Building on these assumptions we propose an adaptive channel estimation method based on Doppler prediction and time-smoothing, which effectively reduces the pilot overhead. System performance is demonstrated using real data transmitted over a shallow water channel in the 10-15 kHz acoustic band from a vehicle moving at 0.5-2 m/s, using QPSK and a varying number of carriers ranging from 64 to 1024. Results demonstrate a uniform gain over the single-transmitter case.

Book Index Modulation for OFDM Communications Systems

Download or read book Index Modulation for OFDM Communications Systems written by Miaowen Wen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their considerable advantages, index modulation and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are considered to be promising candidates for future wireless communications. This book focuses on the index modulation techniques for OFDM communications systems, which allow information to be conveyed not only via constellation symbols, but also by the indices of various transmission entities in OFDM systems, such as signal constellations, spreading codes, and pilots. The book discusses representative transmitter and receiver designs, optimization and performance analysis of index modulation based on various transmission entities. It first introduces readers to constellation-based index modulation via a combinatorial approach, including the classical index modulation scheme and two embodiments of information-guided precoding for OFDM systems. It further discusses constellation-based index modulation via a permutational approach, including the basic, generalized, and diversity-enhancing forms. It then describes how the spreading code is used to design an index modulated spread spectrum for OFDM systems, and the extensions to multi-code and multi-user scenarios. In addition it explores information guided pilot insertion for OFDM systems, followed by applications to carrier phase tracking and channel estimation. Lastly, the book highlights a number of open problems and discusses future research directions in the general field of index modulation. Intended for professionals and researchers in the field of wireless communications, this book is also a valuable resource for advanced-level electrical engineering and computer science students.

Book Turbo coded Frequency Division Multiplexing for Underwater Acoustic Communications Between 60 KHz and 90 KHz

Download or read book Turbo coded Frequency Division Multiplexing for Underwater Acoustic Communications Between 60 KHz and 90 KHz written by Milutin Pajovic and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Intermediate Frequency Acoustic Modem (IFAM), developed by Dr. Beaujean, is designed to transmit the command-and-control messages from the top-side to the wet-side unit in ports and very shallow waters. This research presents the design of the turbo coding scheme and its implementation in the IFAM modem with the purpose of meeting a strict requirement for the IFAM error rate performance. To simulate the coded IFAM, a channel simulator is developed. It is basically a multi-tap filter whose parameters are set depending on the channel geometry and system specifics. The simulation results show that the turbo code is able to correct 89% of the messages received with errors in the hostile channel conditions. The Bose-Chadhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) coding scheme corrects less that 15% of these messages. The other simulation results obtained for the system operation in different shallow water settings are presented.

Book Harvesting Time frequency space Diversity with Coded Modulation for Underwater Acoustic Communications

Download or read book Harvesting Time frequency space Diversity with Coded Modulation for Underwater Acoustic Communications written by Konstantinos Pelekanakis and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) Both systems are combined with specific space-time block codes (STBC) when two or three transmit antennas are used. Moreover, pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation is performed by using a robust 2-D Wiener filter, which copes with channel model mismatch by employing appropriate time and frequency correlation functions. The following result was obtained by testing the aforementioned systems using both simulated and experimental data from RACE '08: the BICM scheme performs better when the UWA channel exhibits limited spatial diversity. This result implies that coded modulation schemes emphasizing higher Hamming distances are preferred when there is no option for many receive/transmit hydrophones. The TCM scheme, on the other hand, becomes a better choice when the UWA channel demonstrates a high spatial diversity order. This result implies that coded modulation schemes emphasizing higher free Euclidean distances are preferred when multiple receive/transmit hydrophones are deployed.

Book Differential Frequency Hopping DFH Modulation for Underwater Acoustic Communications and Networking

Download or read book Differential Frequency Hopping DFH Modulation for Underwater Acoustic Communications and Networking written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary technical objective of this effort is to realize theoretical DFH performance in the doubly spread underwater acoustic channel. To do so, we need to develop demodulation schemes that are robust to various aspects of the environment. Variations in water depth, bottom type, sound speed profile, and source/receiver location call provide for wide ranges of multi-path interference (resulting in time spread). Different wind and surface wave conditions in combination with platform motion can result in varying degrees of Doppler spreading. The developed algorithms must work well across the range of conditions that will be encountered in real-life scenarios. Within the doubly-spread underwater acoustic channel, we wish to increase throughput without penalty to the inherent interference and collision tolerant properties of the waveform. This includes channel access by multiple users sharing the same frequency band (and even the same hop set) and the same time interval.
