Book Wine and Conversation

Download or read book Wine and Conversation written by Adrienne Lehrer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vocabulary of wine is large and exceptionally vibrant -- from straight-forward descriptive words like "sweet" and "fragrant", colorful metaphors like "ostentatious" and "brash", to the more technical lexicon of biochemistry. The world of wine vocabulary is growing alongside the current popularity of wine itself, particularly as new words are employed by professional wine writers, who not only want to write interesting prose, but avoid repetition and cliché. The question is, what do these words mean? Can they actually reflect the objective characteristics of wine, and can two drinkers really use and understand these words in the same way? In this second edition of Wine and Conversation, linguist Adrienne Lehrer explores whether or not wine drinkers (both novices and experts) can in fact understand wine words in the same way. Her conclusion, based on experimental results, is no. Even though experts do somewhat better than novices in some experiments, they tend to do well only on wines on which they are carefully trained and/or with which they are very familiar. Does this mean that the elaborate language we use to describe wine is essentially a charade? Lehrer shows that although scientific wine writing requires a precise and shared use of language, drinking wine and talking about it in casual, informal setting with friends is different, and the conversational goals include social bonding as well as communicating information about the wine. Lehrer also shows how language innovation and language play, clearly seen in the names of new wines and wineries, as well as wine descriptors, is yet another influence on the burgeoning and sometimes whimsical world of wine vocabulary.

Book excerpt: This book was created not long after we all were quarantined due to the pandemic. I had completed all of my crossword puzzles and word finds. When I searched for adult activity books, I realized there weren't any puzzles about wine. A few weeks later, I sketched some ideas and one page became sixty pages. This book is a compilation of my experience in the wine industry and my culture. I hope that this book will inspire more of our community to explore all types of wine and perhaps a career in this field.

Book Digital Wine

Download or read book Digital Wine written by Tara Brabazon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the way in which QR codes (Quick Response codes) can help the wine industry facilitate distribution and more effectively market and sell their product. It examines the interventions, invention and opportunities brought about by QR codes for the wine industry. It also investigates how QR codes can help enable regional development as well as information and knowledge about winemakers and regions. The book begins with an introduction to QR codes. It explains how to use them as well as shows how QR codes combine analogue and online promotion and information dissemination. Next, the book explores strategies and examples from the creative industries, small nation theory and emerging wine industries. It then goes on to examine how to integrate QR codes with wine media, including marketing the bottle and using QR codes to build new wine regions. The book concludes with a case study of how Aotearoa/New Zealand wine producers deploy QR codes. QR codes can store and digitally present, a range of helpful data, including URL links, geo-coordinates and text and can be scanned by smart phones, making them a useful marketing and business tool. Presenting detail research on how QR codes can enhance the relationship between producers and consumers as well as aid regional development in the wine industry, this book will be of interest to academics focusing on Wine Studies, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and practitioners and researchers from the creative industries sector. In addition, while this book focuses on the wine industry, the information that it presents about QR codes is relevant and applicable for an array of industries that require a tether between analogue and digital, physical and virtual, especially food and primary production.

Book Cincinnati Wine An Effervescent History

Download or read book Cincinnati Wine An Effervescent History written by Dann Woellert and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wine and Cincinnati were once a perfect pairing, so much so that the "Queen City" nickname was inspired by Sparkling Catawba Wine, the delectable libation that sparked the Catawba Craze of the mid-1800s. Longworth's Golden Wedding Sparkling Catawba was the most celebrated, but Werk's Golden Eagle and Red Cross, Corneau's Cornucopia, Thompson's Hillside, Bogen's Diamond, Mottier's National Premium and Schumann's Queen Victoria also bolstered the city's reputation as the American Rhineland. These winemakers passed their knowledge on to Lake Erie, the New York Finger Lakes, Pennsylvania, Missouri and California. Today, that knowledge has returned home, as Henke, Skeleton Root, Meier and Vinoklet hope to make the city a wine haven once again. Food historian Dann Woellert leads a tour through Cincy's storied past and promising future with the grape and the vine.
