Book The Nigerian Cocoa Industry and the International Economy in the 1930s

Download or read book The Nigerian Cocoa Industry and the International Economy in the 1930s written by Olisa Muojama and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Periodic cycles and waves are characteristics of global capitalism. The contraction in world trade during the Great Depression of the 1930s stands out as the strongest adverse shock to international trade in modern history. This book uses the Nigerian cocoa industry’s encounter with the world economy of the 1930s to knit together a gamut of themes ranging from the social formations of production to the forces of demand and supply, and price fluctuations and stabilization, as well as the protest movements against monopoly capitalism. It examines the Nigerian cocoa industry within the international economy of the inter-war years, in order to demonstrate how the dynamics of the international capitalism of the 1930s such as the Great Depression and the fluctuations in commodity prices affected the cocoa industry and the peasant cocoa producers in colonial Nigeria. It provides an interesting case study of the impact of international capitalism on the periphery economy, as well as the consequences of economic dependence on the external market. This book will be an indispensable resource for historians, economists, anthropologists and the general reader with an interest in the areas of international political economy, depression economics, world commodity trade, and agriculture and its related industries.

Book Nigeria U S Trade Relations in the Non Oil Sector

Download or read book Nigeria U S Trade Relations in the Non Oil Sector written by Gbadebo Olusegun Odularu and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In as much as trade fosters economic development, it also exacerbates poverty, especially in the sub Saharan African (SSA) countries. Against this backdrop, this study will increase our understanding of the estimation of non-oil commodity trade flows between Nigeria and the U.S. More specifically, the study aims to analysing the impact of African Growth Opportunity Act (AGOA) on the U.S. imports of non-oil products from Nigeria. The research objectives are woven around the following questions: - What is the nature of Nigeria's and the U.S.'s foreign trade policies with particular reference to non-oil trade? - What are the patterns, magnitude, composition and trends in Nigeria-US non-oil trade? - Which economic sectors possess greatest potential for fostering trade in the non-oil sector between Nigeria and the U.S.? - What is the impact of AGOA on the diversification and growth of non-oil exports in Nigeria? This study adopts the difference-in-differences (DiD) as the research methodology. Within the Nigerian context, DiD intuitively compares the trends in imports of AGOA non-oil products before and after AGOA with the pattern of imports of non-AGOA non-oil products before and after AGOA, controlling for the timing of AGOA, import capacity and economic performance of both U.S. and Nigeria. Using the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Integrated Data Base (IDB), the empirical analysis reveals that AGOA non-oil products increased by as much as 182 percent with the implementation of AGOA, while the non-AGOA non-oil products fell by 76 percent. Conclusively, AGOA has had a considerably positive impact on the Nigerian non-oil sector at the general level. The policy implication of the empirical analysis is the need for the U.S. to expand the product coverage and opportunities of AGOA non-oil products in order for AGOA to achieve its objectives of using trade as a potent tool for promoting economic growth in SSA.

Book Educating the Middlemen

Download or read book Educating the Middlemen written by Jan-Georg Deutsch and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to describe the evolution of a single economic institution in Nigeria: The Nigerian Cocoa Marketing Board. The Board was set up in 1947 in order to control the buying and selling of cocoa and to regulate the activities of cocoa traders and buying firms. Such a narrow focus is justified on the grounds that the development of cocoa marketing institutions in Nigeria epitomises an important aspect of the development of the Nigerian political economy between the 1930s and 1950s. When war broke out in 1939, the Ministry of Food assumed control over the external marketing trade of all major Nigerian export commodities, including cocoa. The responsibility for the cocoa control scheme was subsequently transferred to the Colonial Office. Already in 1941, the Colonial Office and the West African governments, including the Nigerian government, began to discuss whether it would be desirable to continue or terminate statutory marketing control after the war. The decision to establish the Nigerian Cocoa Marketing Board was largely taken because the Colonial Office and the West African governments believed that statutory marketing provided a convenient administrative solution for the recurrent political conflicts in the 1930s cocoa trade. These conflicts revolved around the strained commercial relationship between European trading firms and African traders and reached a climax in the West African 1937/38 cocoa hold-up crisis. The main argument in this thesis is that, at the end of the war, the colonial authorities, parts of the nationalist movement in Nigeria, and a number of smaller African and European trading firms came to the conclusion that a return to the 1930s 'free trade' regime and its conflicts would not suit their long-term political and economic interests. This implicit consensus allowed the Colonial Office to surmount strong opposition from American, British and West African trading interests against the scheme in the politically sensitive post-war period.

Book The Atlas of Economic Complexity

Download or read book The Atlas of Economic Complexity written by Ricardo Hausmann and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps capture data expressing the economic complexity of countries from Albania to Zimbabwe, offering current economic measures and as well as a guide to achieving prosperity Why do some countries grow and others do not? The authors of The Atlas of Economic Complexity offer readers an explanation based on "Economic Complexity," a measure of a society's productive knowledge. Prosperous societies are those that have the knowledge to make a larger variety of more complex products. The Atlas of Economic Complexity attempts to measure the amount of productive knowledge countries hold and how they can move to accumulate more of it by making more complex products. Through the graphical representation of the "Product Space," the authors are able to identify each country's "adjacent possible," or potential new products, making it easier to find paths to economic diversification and growth. In addition, they argue that a country's economic complexity and its position in the product space are better predictors of economic growth than many other well-known development indicators, including measures of competitiveness, governance, finance, and schooling. Using innovative visualizations, the book locates each country in the product space, provides complexity and growth potential rankings for 128 countries, and offers individual country pages with detailed information about a country's current capabilities and its diversification options. The maps and visualizations included in the Atlas can be used to find more viable paths to greater productive knowledge and prosperity.

Book Trade and Poor Economies

Download or read book Trade and Poor Economies written by John Toye and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1979. Development economists, when they discuss the role played by international trade in a country’s economic development, tend to tell one of three types of story. The first shows how the welfare of both (and by easy extension, all) countries which engage in trade is increased, even when one country is absolutely very rich and the other is absolutely very poor. The second, is a dull and detailed story about the way in which differences in economic structure between countries bias the gains from trade in favour of the rich, technologically advanced and industrialised economies and against the poor, low-technology agricultural economies. The third story asserts that trade and economic specialisation have actually caused the underdevelopment of the periphery of the world by the very same processes that have developed the capitalist metropolis. This volume brings together nine pieces of work that look trade and the poor economies of Ghana, Nigeria, Mexico, Brazil, Central America, Jute stocks and Third World Trade Trends and prospects.
