Book excerpt: Cocaine is the story of a young man who runs off to Paris to seek fame, fortune, and fun. Pitigrilli's classic novel charts the comedy and pathos of a young man's tragic trajectory. Tito Arnaudi is a dandified hero with several mistresses he juggles. A failed medical student, Tito is hired as a journalist in Paris, where he investigates cocaine dens and invents lurid scandals and gruesome deaths that he sells to newspapers as his own life becomes more outrageous than his phony press reports. Telling of orgies and strawberries soaked in champagne and ether, Tito lives with intensity as he pursues his Italian girlfriend Maud (née Maddalena) and wealthy Armenian Kalantan, who insists on making love in a black coffin. Provocatively illustrated, filled with lush, intoxicating prose,Cocaine is a wicked novel about the Lost Generation in 1920s Paris. Dizzy and decadent, Pitigrilli leaves nothing unexplored as he presents astonishing descriptions of upper class debauching -- strawberries and chloroform, naked dancing, cocaine aplenty, and guests openly injecting morphine. Despite its wit,Cocaine is a sobering account of the dangers of drugs and sexual obsession. Tito happily trades in his twilight years for moments of wicked ecstasy.

Book Chase for Cocaine s High at All Time Low

Download or read book Chase for Cocaine s High at All Time Low written by Tommy Khoa Dang Lieu and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Law enforcement around the world have put a strangle-hold on the cocaine industry. As a result, drastic changes in the potency and physical properties of the cocaine available in the eastern Canadian market have occurred over the past 25+ years. Not only have there been changes to the drug itself, but these changes have also resulted in transformation of the behaviour of users and the areas of Toronto (and other major world cities) affected by cocaine trafficking and use. The bottom line? The cocaine available today is measurably less potent and of a far lesser quality than that available in the past. And this deterioration is only going to continue, as global trends suggest that it will be next to impossible to produce cocaine of the same potency as 25 years ago, particularly due to the success and progress of law enforcement across the globe. Tommy Khoa Dang Lieu chronicles his experiences in the cocaine and drug trade, weaving a compelling argument that combines lived experience with hard data to paint a picture of the decline of the once-lucrative cocaine industry.

Book Cocaine and Methamphetamine Dependence

Download or read book Cocaine and Methamphetamine Dependence written by Thomas R. Kosten and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the APA's Textbook of Addiction Psychiatry covers material that a general psychiatrist or primary care physician needs for the appropriate referral and initial management of stimulant dependence, Cocaine and Methamphetamine Dependence: Advances in Treatment goes beyond this basic knowledge and addresses the rapid evolution of both the understanding and the treatment of stimulant abusers. It also sheds light on how the epidemiology of cocaine, amphetamine and methamphetamine abuse and dependence have substantial differences in geographic distribution both here and abroad, and how treatments are evolving to help these complex patients benefit from emerging pharmacological and behavioral therapies. Cocaine dependence complications account for one out of every three drug-related emergency room visits. Coroners' reports relate stimulants to the direct cause of death in 25% of cocaine overdoses and 68% of methamphetamine overdoses or as antecedents causing cardiovascular or medical problems leading to death in 20% of these abusers. Additionally, cocaine and methamphetamine abuse and dependence frequently co-occur with other major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, major depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This makes a greater understanding of stimulant dependence among the psychiatric community an integral part of providing effective evaluation and treatment. Cocaine and Methamphetamine Dependence provides: An introduction of the DSM-5 plan to drop the distinction between abuse and dependence and add craving as a criterion. An overview of how the epidemiology of stimulant abuse is changing and pharmaceutical abuse is rising due to factors such as greater availability through family and friends who are increasingly being prescribed stimulants for conditions like weight loss or attention deficit disorder. The insight that even after long abstinence, stimulant users may remain vulnerable to amphetamine-induced psychosis, with delusions, paranoia and compulsive behavior. The insight that a comprehensive assessment of the patient involves the management of aberrant behaviors such as intoxication, violence, suicide, impaired cognitive function, and uncontrolled affective displays. A focus on treatment, emphasizing that the most important component of stimulant treatment involves behavioral therapies, often in combination with adjunctive medications. A review of the criminal justice system's shift away from punitive action and towards more human treatment, including the far-reaching benefits of medical management and treatment. Fortunately, our understanding of stimulant abuse and dependence is growing at a time when a steady stream of new users and casualties is still accumulating. Constant vigilance regarding changes in epidemiology, fluctuations in drug availability, and changes in drug trafficking patterns are essential to recognition of new drug abuse patterns and their identification and treatment. Cocaine and Methamphetamine Dependence should be on the bookshelf of residents, physicians and psychiatrists who are highly likely to come into contact with one of the millions using and abusing stimulants today.

Book Cocaine

  • Author : Enrique Desmond Arias

Download or read book Cocaine written by Enrique Desmond Arias and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-09-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to Cocaine analyze the contemporary production, transit, and consumption of cocaine throughout the Americas and the illicit economy's entanglement with local communities. Based on in-depth interviews and archival research, these essays examine how government agents, acting both within and outside the law, and criminal actors seek to manage the flow of illicit drugs to both maintain order and earn profits. Whether discussing the moral economy of coca cultivation in Bolivia, criminal organizations and drug traffickers in Mexico, or the routes cocaine takes as it travels into and through Guatemala, the contributors demonstrate how entire ways of life are built around cocaine commodification. They consider how the authority of state actors is coupled with the self-regulating practices of drug producers, traffickers, and dealers, complicating notions of governance and of the relationships between economic and moral economies. The collection also outlines a more progressive drug policy that acknowledges the important role drugs play in the lives of those at the urban and rural margins. Contributors. Fontes, Robert Gay, Paul Gootenberg, Romain Le Cour Grandmaison, Thomas Grisaffi, Laurie Kain Hart, Annette Idler, George Karandinos, Fernando Montero, Dennis Rodgers, Taniele Rui, Cyrus Veeser, Autumn Zellers-León
