Book Cobalt Nickel and the Elements of the Platinum Group Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cobalt Nickel and the Elements of the Platinum Group Classic Reprint written by J. Newton Friend and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cobalt, Nickel, and the Elements of the Platinum Group Again, the platinum metals are so closely similar in many of their properties that it was decided to treat of their detection and estimation all together in Chapter X, rather than to deal with each separately at the end of the chapters dealing with their compounds, as has been done with cobalt and nickel, and, indeed, with the elements in the remaining volumes. The state of our knowledge of the chemistry of the platinum metals, although greatly improved during the last twenty years, is still far from satisfactory. This, no doubt, is due to a variety of reasons, such as the rarity of the metals, their consequently high cost, apd their similarity to one another, which renders their preparation in a state of purity an extremely arduous task. This latter feature is well exemplified by the efforts of Matthey to prepare pure iridium. His work is described in fair detail on pp. 235 - 236 of the text. Even after a most elaborate treatment the metal still contained traces of ruthenium and rhodium. In consequence of this difficulty, there can be no doubt that the early investigators frequently worked with a very impure metal, and this may in some measure account for discrepancies and apparent contradictions in their results. Book Extractive Metallurgy of Nickel Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals

Download or read book Extractive Metallurgy of Nickel Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals written by Frank Crundwell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-07-18 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and explains the methods by which three related ores and recyclables are made into high purity metals and chemicals, for materials processing. It focuses on present day processes and future developments rather than historical processes. Nickel, cobalt and platinum group metals are key elements for materials processing. They occur together in one book because they (i) map together on the periodic table (ii) occur together in many ores and (iii) are natural partners for further materials processing and materials manufacturing. They all are, for example, important catalysts – with platinum group metals being especially important for reducing car and truck emissions. Stainless steels and CoNiFe airplane engine super alloys are examples of practical usage. The product emphasises a sequential, building-block approach to the subject gained through the author's previous writings (particularly Extractive Metallurgy of Copper in four editions) and extensive experience. Due to the multiple metals involved and because each metal originates in several types of ore – e.g. tropical ores and arctic ores this necessitates a multi-contributor work drawing from multiple networks and both engineering and science. - Synthesizes detailed review of the fundamental chemistry and physics of extractive metallurgy with practical lessons from industrial consultancies at the leading international plants - Discusses Nickel, Cobalt and Platinum Group Metals for the first time in one book - Reviews extraction of multiple metals from the same tropical or arctic ore - Industrial, international and multidisciplinary focus on current standards of production supports best practice use of industrial resources

Book Agromining Farming for Metals

Download or read book Agromining Farming for Metals written by Antony van der Ent and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second and expanded edition of the first book on agromining (phytomining) presents a comprehensive overview of the metal farming & recovery of the agromining production chain. Agromining is an emerging technology that aims to transform the extraction of sources of target elements not accessible by traditional mining and processing techniques. Agromining, which is based on sustainable development, uses hyperaccumulator plants as 'metal crops' farmed on sub-economic soils or minerals wastes to obtain valuable target elements. This volume is edited and authored by the pioneers in the rapidly expanding field of agromining and presents the latest insights and developments in the field. This book provides in-depth information on the global distribution and ecology of hyperaccumulator plants, their biogeochemical pathways, the influence of rhizosphere microbes, the physiology and molecular biology of hyperaccumulation, as well as aspects of propagation and conservation of these unusual plants. It describes the agronomy of metal crops and opportunities for incorporating agromining into rehabilitation and mine closure, including test cases for agromining of nickel, cobalt, manganese, arsenic, selenium, cadmium, zinc, thallium, rare earth elements and platinum group elements. Since the first edition was published, there have successful nickel agromining field trials in the tropics (in Malaysia and Guatemala), and these are presented in a dedicated case study chapter. Other new chapters focus on the processing of bio-ore for elements other than nickel, such as rare earth elements and cadmium, and on agromining from industrial wastes such as tailings, and industrial by-products and sites. Furthermore, the book features two new chapters that provide a comprehensive assessment of accumulation a very wide range elements from the Periodic Table in various plant species around the globe, and a chapter on practical methods for discovery of hyperaccumulator plant species in the field and in the herbarium. This book is of interest to environmental professionals in the minerals industry, government regulators, and academics.

Book Ore Deposits in an Evolving Earth

Download or read book Ore Deposits in an Evolving Earth written by G.R.T. Jenkin and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ore deposits form by a variety of natural processes that concentrate elements into a volume that can be economically mined. Their type, character and abundance reflect the environment in which they formed and thus they preserve key evidence for the evolution of magmatic and tectonic processes, the state of the atmosphere and hydrosphere, and the evolution of life over geological time. This volume presents 13 papers on topical subjects in ore deposit research viewed in the context of Earth evolution. These diverse, yet interlinked, papers cover topics including: controls on the temporal and spatial distribution of ore deposits; the sources of fluid, gold and other components of orogenic gold deposits; the degree of oxygenation in the Neoproterozoic ocean; bacterial immobilization of gold in the semi-arid near-surface environment; and mineral resources for the future, including issues of resource estimation, sustainability of supply and the criticality of certain elements to society.
