Book Coastal Upwelling Its Sediment Record

Download or read book Coastal Upwelling Its Sediment Record written by Jörn Thiede and published by Springer. This book was released on 1983-07-31 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATO Advanced Research Institutes are designed to explore unre solved problems. By focusing complementary expertise from various disciplines onto one unifying theme, they approach old problems in new ways. In line with this goal of the NATO Science Committee, and with substantial support from the u.s. Office of Naval Research and the Seabed Assessment Program of the u.s. National Science Founda tion, such a Research Institute on the theme of Coastal Qpw llinq and Its Sediment Record was held September 1-4, 1981, in Vilamoura, Portuqal. The theme implies a modification of uniformitarian thinking in earth science. Expectations were directed not so much towards find ing the key to the past as towards explorinq the limits of interpret inq the past based on present upwelling oceanography. Coastal up wellinq and its imprint on sediments are particularly well-suited for such a scientific inquiry. The oceanic processes and conditions characteristic of upwelling are well understood and are a well packaqed representation of ocean science that are familiar to qeolo gists, just as the maqnitude of bioproduction and sedimentation in upwellinq reqimes --among other bioloqical and geoloqical processes- have made oceanographers realize that the bottom has a feedback role for their models.

Book Upwelling in the Ocean

Download or read book Upwelling in the Ocean written by C. P. Summerhayes and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upwelling is one of the major physical processes driving the biogeochemistry of the ocean system. It dominates primary productivity in the world?s oceans, accounting for 80?90% of new production. However, because of the physical conditions that have to be met to generate upwelling, this production is concentrated in just a few places, e.g., in the coastal waters of major eastern boundary currents off California, Peru, Mauritania, and Namibia, where productivity leads to major fishing grounds. These areas account for about 50% of the world?s fish catch, underlining the importance of upwelling to humankind. Source rocks for oil formed in ancient coastal upwelling environments, making their study useful for improving oil exploration models. Upwelling also occurs in the open ocean, especially along the equator and beneath the westerly winds in the subarctic Pacific and the Southern Ocean, where the ocean?s silica budget is transformed by the deposition of the remains of siliceous phytoplankton. Because phytoplankton, the grass of the sea, can extract CO2 from the atmosphere, changes in the intensity of upwelling and associated biological productivity through time may have influenced climate. This volume uses an interdisciplinary approach to establish how upwelling systems work, how they vary through time, and whether or not they have a significant influence on the global carbon cycle. An understanding of how these largely wind-driven biogeochemical systems work today, and how they responded to past fluctuations in climate, is essential in predicting how they and their associated living resources may change in the future. One conclusion is that these systems exert a major influence on the global cycle of nutrients, a factor that contributes to making the coastal regions major sinks for organic carbon. This book recommends new strategies for observation, sampling, monitoring, experimentation, and modeling as the basis for improving forecasts of the behavior of upwelling systems. It will be of interest to physical oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, marine organic and inorganic chemists, marine geologists, petroleum explorers, paleoceanographers, and paleoclimatologists.

Book Siliceous Phosphatic and Clauconitic Sediments of the Tertiary and Mesozoic

Download or read book Siliceous Phosphatic and Clauconitic Sediments of the Tertiary and Mesozoic written by Akihito Iijima and published by VSP. This book was released on 1994-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Proceedings volume contains 14 papers from the symposium ''Siliceous, Phosphatic and Glauconitic Sediments of the Tertiary and Mesozoic'', which was held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September, 1992. The first part of this volume consists of papers dealing with Tertiary biosiliceous sediments of the Pacific Rim, starting in the northwest. The second part of the volume is composed of papers dealing with Tertiary and Mesozoic phosphatic rocks and phosphatebearing sequences, in particular of the eastern Pacific Rim and the Middle East. The articles serve to emphasize the similarities and differences between the Pacific Neogene successions and the Tethyan Mesozoic sequences of the Middle East.

Book Phosphate Deposits of the World Volume 3 Neogene to Modern Phosphorites

Download or read book Phosphate Deposits of the World Volume 3 Neogene to Modern Phosphorites written by P. J. Cook and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1986 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of marine phosphorites, the principal raw material for phosphatic fertilizers, appears to be related mainly to marine biological productivity, often associated with upwelling currents during certain intervals of geological time. This book examines the environmental setting and resulting phosphorites which formed during the Miocene period, and investigations of modern oceanic environments where phosphorites are presently forming are also described.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sound understanding of the global carbon cycle requires an appreciation of the various physico-chemical and biological processes that determine the production, distribution, deposition and diagenesis of organic matter in the natural environment. This book is a comprehensive interdisciplinary synthesis of this information, coupled with an organic facies approach based on data from both microscopy and bulk organic geochemistry.

Download or read book The Sea Floor written by Eugen Seibold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man's understanding of how this planet is put together and how it evolved has changed radically during the last 30 years. This great revolution in geology - now usually subsumed under the concept of Plate Tectonics - brought the realization that convection within the Earth is responsible for the origin of today's ocean basins and conti nents, and that the grand features of the Earth's surface are the product of ongoing large-scale horizontal motions. Some of these notions were put forward earlier in this century (by A. Wegener, in 1912, and by A. Holmes, in 1929), but most of the new ideas were an outgrowth of the study of the ocean floor after World War II. In its impact on the earth sciences, the plate tectonics revolution is comparable to the upheaval wrought by the ideas of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), which started the intense discussion on the evolution of the biospere that has recently heated up again. Darwin drew his inspiration from observations on island life made during the voyage of the Beagle (1831-1836), and his work gave strong impetus to the first global oceanographic expedition, the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872- 1876). Ever since, oceanographic research has been intimately associ ated with fundamental advances in the knowledge of Earth. This should come as no surprise. After all, our planet's surface is mostly ocean.
