Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illustrated narrative that interweaves the shifting seasons of the Northwest Coast with the experiences of a conservation biologist surveying thousands of kilometres of open ocean in order to uncover the complex relationships between humans, marine birds and the realities of contemporary biodiversity. At Sea with the Marine Birds of the Raincoast combines the natural and human histories of Pacific Northwest marine birds with Caroline Fox's personal story of her life as a conservation scientist. Accompanied by vivid images, drawings and both archival and modern photography, the narrative follows the author as she sails the coast, documenting marine bird diversity and seasonal shifts in community assemblages. This unique story captures the natural splendour and rich variety of marine birds feeding, breeding and undertaking spectacular, often trans-equatorial migrations along the Northwest Coast. Introducing some of the most fascinating yet poorly understood species, including albatrosses, puffins and cranes, this compelling read calls attention to the urgent conservation challenges faced by marine birds and their ecosystems, as well as their historically complex relationship with human society.

Download or read book King and Common Eiders of the Western Canadian Arctic written by D. Lynne Dickson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two eider populations breed in the western Canadian Arctic and winter in the Bering Sea: the Pacific subspecies of the Common Eider Somateria mollissima v-nigra and the western Arctic population of the King Eider S. spectabilis. Both eiders are harvested primarily in the spring by the Aboriginal people of northern communities and to a small extent in faIl by sport hunters. Some eggs of the colonially nesting Common Eider are also taken. Compared with other harvested waterfowl, there are few available data on even the most basic aspects of the biology of these two eider populations, induding their status and nesting distribution"--Introd.

Book The Common Eider Somateria Mollissima Sedentaria of Eastern Hudson Bay

Download or read book The Common Eider Somateria Mollissima Sedentaria of Eastern Hudson Bay written by D. J. Nakashima and published by Environmental Studies Revolving Funds. This book was released on 1988 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson Bay eider is one of the least known subspecies of the common eider. Prior to the present study, no reliable estimates of breeding population size could be produced, as no systematic and large-scale ground surveys of nest colonies had been done. In response to the threat posed by oil exploration in central Hudson Bay, this study was designed to provide information on the numbers, breeding distribution and ecology of common eiders in the eastern part of the Bay. Seven subregions were selected for intensive ground surveys for Part I of the study. Data on Hudson Bay eider ecology were collected during 134 hours of semi-directive interviews with 41 individuals from the communities of Sanikiluaq, N.W.T., and Inukjuak and Kuujjuarapik, northern Quebec. Extensive information was compiled on eider taxonomy, biogeography, behaviour, diet, life history and breeding, and wintering ecology.
