Book Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century

Download or read book Enabling Ocean Research in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-14 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance of the oceans to society grows, so does the need to understand their variation on many temporal and spatial scales. This need to understand ocean change is compelling scientists to move beyond traditional expeditionary modes of investigation. Observing systems will enable the study of processes in the ocean basins over varying timescales and spatial scales, providing the scientific basis for addressing important societal concerns such as climate change, natural hazards, and the health and viability of living and non-living resources along our coasts and in the open ocean. The book evaluates the scientific and technical readiness to move ahead with the establishment of a research-driven ocean observatory network, and highlights outstanding issues. These issues include the status of planning and development, factors that affect the timing of construction and installation, the cost and requirements for maintenance and operations, needs for sensor development and data management, the impact on availability of ships and deep submergence facilities, and the role of research-based observatories within national and international operational ocean observing systems being developed and implemented.

Book System Architecture and Operational Issues of Ocean Observatories as Exemplified by the Martha s Vineyard Coastal Observatory A Cabled Platform for Long Term Studies

Download or read book System Architecture and Operational Issues of Ocean Observatories as Exemplified by the Martha s Vineyard Coastal Observatory A Cabled Platform for Long Term Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 20th century the study of the oceans has moved from episodic sampling of organisms and the physical characteristics of the water to an attempt to elucidate the dynamic processes occurring not just within the water column but extending into both the benthic and atmospheric boundary layers Attempts to extrapolate from these point observations, to understand and model these processes have demonstrated the need for continuous high resolution synoptic sampling from long-term, stable platforms The Martha's Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO), installed on the exposed south coast of the island of Martha's Vineyard, is one approach to meeting this need. It was designed to provide scientists with an expandable network of stable and varied instrument platforms for the long-term study of dynamic processes occurring in the ocean and at the ocean-atmosphere interface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oceans cover 70% of the terrestrial surface, and exert a pervasive influence on the Earth's environment but their nature is poorly recognized. Knowing the ocean's role deeply and understanding the complex, physical, biological, chemical and geological systems operating within it represent a major challenge to scientists today. Seafloor observatories offer scientists new opportunites to study multiple, interrelated natural phenomena over time scales ranging from seconds to decades, from episodic to global and long-term processes. Seafloor Observatories poses the important and apparently simple question, "How can continuous and reliable monitoring at the seafloor by means of Seafloor Observatories extend exploration and improve knowledge of our planet?" The book leads the reader through: the present scientific challenges to be addressed with seafloor observatories the technical solutions for their architecture an excursus on worldwide ongoing projects and programmes some relevant scientific multidisciplinary results and a presentation of new and interesting long-term perspectives for the coming years. Current results will yield significant improvements and exert a strong impact not only on our present knowledge of our planet but also on human evolution.

Book Illuminating the Hidden Planet

Book Coastal Ocean Processes A Science Prospectus

Download or read book Coastal Ocean Processes A Science Prospectus written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CoOP (Coastal Ocean Processes) is an organization meant to study major interdisciplinary scientific problems in the coastal ocean. Its goal is to obtain a new level of quantitative understanding of the processes that dominate the transformations, transports and fates of biologically, chemically and geologically important matter on the continental margin. Central to obtaining this understanding will be advances in observing and modeling the cross-shelf component of transport. More specific objectives are to understand (1) cross- margin exchanges, (2) air sea exchanges, (3) benthic-pelagic exchanges, (4) terrestrial inputs and (5) biological and chemical transformations within the water column. CoOP research will be carried out primarily through a series of process-oriented field studies, each involving about two years of measurements. Each of these field studies is to be initiated and defined through a community workshop. In addition to the process studies, CoOP will also involve modeling, long time series, exploratory studies, remote sensing, technological innovation, data archiving and communications. A CoOP pilot study has been approved for funding by the National Science Foundation, and funding will begin in 1992. The CoOP science effort is thus already underway ... Coastal oceanography, Coastal meteorology, Continental shelf.

Book excerpt: How inappropriate to call this planet Earth when it is quite clearly Ocean (Arthur C. Clarke). Life has been originated in the oceans, human health and activities depend from the oceans and the world life is modulated by marine and oceanic processes. From the micro-scale, like coastal processes, to macro-scale, the oceans, the seas and the marine life, play the main role to maintain the earth equilibrium, both from a physical and a chemical point of view. Since ancient times, the world's oceans discovery has brought to humanity development and wealth of knowledge, the metaphors of Ulysses and Jason, represent the cultural growth gained through the explorations and discoveries. The modern oceanographic research represents one of the last frontier of the knowledge of our planet, it depends on the oceans exploration and so it is strictly connected to the development of new technologies. Furthermore, other scientific and social disciplines can provide many fundamental inputs to complete the description of the entire ocean ecosystem. Such multidisciplinary approach will lead us to understand the better way to preserve our "Blue Planet": the Earth.
