Book Ecosystem based Management of Fisheries

Download or read book Ecosystem based Management of Fisheries written by United Nations Environment Programme and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ecosystem approach to the management of oceans and their resources was consolidated in Agenda 21. Practical application of this approach is still in early stages of development by regional organizations for fisheries, and for the marine and coastal environment. This publication contains a brief description of marine Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs) and the Regional Seas Conventions (RSCs) noting the origins, status, geographic coverage and basis for consideration of the ecosystem approach by each. This publication reviews the relationship and mutual relevance of the work carried out by RFBs and RSCs, especially in areas relating to biodiversity of species, habitat, marine environment quality, climate change, land-based pollution of the marine environment, and in the monitoring and assessment which applies to these areas. It is suggested that as ecosystem considerations and indicator frameworks are increasingly factored into fisheries management, the functionalities of RFBs and RSCs will need to be adapted in a practical, cost effective way to meet future needs. Concrete suggestions are made for options that may lead to enhanced cooperation on ecosystem-based fishery management.

Book Fishery Co Management

Download or read book Fishery Co Management written by Robert S. Pomeroy and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, there has been a shift in the governance and management of fisheries to a broaderapproach that recognizes the participation of fishers, local stewardship, and shared decision-making.Through this process, fishers are empowered to become active members of the management team, balancing rights and responsibilities, and working in partnership with government. This approach iscalled co-management.This handbook describes the process of community-based co-management from its beginning, throughimplementation, to turnover to the community. It provides ideas, methods, techniques, activities, checklists, examples, questions and indicators for the planning and implementing of a process of community-basedco-management. It focuses on small-scale fisheries (freshwater, floodplain, estuarine, or marine) indeveloping countries, but is also relevant to small-scale fisheries in developed countries and to themanagement of other coastal resources (such as coral reefs, mangroves, sea grass, and wetlands). Thishandbook will be of significant interest to resource managers, practitioners, academics and students ofsmall-scale fisheries.

Book Management of Multispecies Resources and Multi gear Fisheries

Download or read book Management of Multispecies Resources and Multi gear Fisheries written by Fukuzō Nagasaki and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The management of multispecies fisheries employed in Japan has been reviewed from both a global and a region/subject-specific point of view. The discussion focuses on five major principles involved in the management of multispecies resources and multi-gear fisheries in the coastal waters around Japan, with examples from past experience. The topics discussed include) the legal and political arrangements for the management and coordination of the fisheries, including the autonomous regulatory system established by the fishermen themselves, 2) the "successional fishing" employed in two small fishing communities. 3) the demersal fish fisheries along the entire coast of Japan, 4) the coastal pelagic fish fisheries with special reference to large changes in stock abundance and species composition and 5) the comprehensive utilization of resources in the Seto Inland Sea. The last topic presents a clear example of a practical application of the comprehensive management measures being applied to a limited sea area where complicated multispecies resources are exploited. In particular, the discussion considers how to cope with changes in the resources brought about by either natural or man-made causes, including the successes and failures of past management. An overall discussion of findings focuses specifically on a few critical problems that must be taken into account when the management of multispecies resources and multi-gear fisheries is planned and/or implemented. Finally, guidelines for such management are set down to facilitate the assessment of such a system in the countries where similar management issues have not yet been experienced.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan is one of the world’s largest fish-eating countries with a long history, and has developed its own customs and values in terms of managing fisheries resources. The first half of this book introduces the history and institutional features of capture fisheries management in Japan, with 9 case studies from sub-arctic to tropical ecosystems, from sedentary to migratory species, and from small-scale coastal to offshore industrial fisheries. For example, coastal fisheries management is more community-based, and local people have the authority and take priority in the decision-making process. In contrast, offshore fisheries are more industrialized and commercially oriented, and the national government plays a major role in their management. One of the main challenges in world fisheries is to implement the ecosystem approach, but there is no one-size-fits-all solution for its implementation. The second half of this book considers the advantages and limitations of the Japanese fisheries management regime and discusses the necessary environmental policy measures to bridge the gaps between fisheries management and ecosystem-based management. As a case study, management measures in the Shiretoko World Natural Heritage area are analyzed. In closing, the Grand Plan of Japanese fisheries policy for the next 20 years and three future scenarios are presented.

Book Making Ocean Policy

Download or read book Making Ocean Policy written by Francis W. Hoole and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in response to the increasing interest in the making of ocean policy, this collection of original articles surveys the history of U.S. ocean policy, ocean policy advocacy, and the struggle within government to determine how best to develop and implement a sensible ocean policy. The increasing complexity of the issues, programs, and policies related to marine and coastal zone matters and the increasing number of government agencies and interest groups formed to deal with these matters reflect the growing awareness of their importance. But, reflect the editors, in an enormously complex world, where many interests are in conflict and where information is tentative and incomplete—yet often overwhelmingly abundant—there are few easy solutions to ocean policy problems.
