Book Coastal Dynamics 95

Download or read book Coastal Dynamics 95 written by William R. Dally and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninety-two proceedings papers from the 1995 conference reviewing large-scale field and laboratory experiments in the European Community, Japan, the US, and the former Soviet-Bloc countries of Russia, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Poland. These volume particularly features the discussions from those latter countries since most of their experiments have not been, until now, released to the West. In more specific terms, the papers report findings in wave motion in vegetated and non-vegetated coastal zone, surf zone modeling, planform considerations of beach nourishment, swash dynamics, runup, low- frequency motion, longshore currents, cross-shore transport, and profile evolution. Book excerpt: Our world is constantly changing, governed by continuity, dynamic interactions and boundary conditions. For many coasts, the common denominators contributing to these changes are sand, waves, tides, salt gradients, and human interaction, all themes that are treated in this valuable textbook.Confining itself to essentials, the coverage reflects centuries of theoretical and practical knowledge of Dutch coastal engineers. Focussing, where applicable, on linear theory, the book shows how the essentials of local coastal behavior can be reproduced and predicted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming, melting polar caps, rising sea levels and intensifying wave-current action, factors responsible for the alarming phenomena of coastal erosion on the one hand and adverse environmental impacts and the high cost of 'hard' protection schemes, on the other, have created interest in the detailed examination of the potential and range of applicability of the emerging and promising category of 'soft' shore protection methods. 'Soft' methods such as beach nourishment, submerged breakwaters, artificial reefs, gravity drain systems, floating breakwaters, plantations of hydrophylous shrubs or even dry branches, applied mostly during the past 20 years, are recognised as possessing technical, environmental and financial advantageous properties deserving more attention and further developmental experimentation than has occured hitherto. On the other hand, 'hard' shore protection methods such as seawalls, groins and detached breakwaters, artefacts borrowed from port design and construction technology, no matter how well designed and well implemented they may be, can hardly avoid intensification of the consequential erosive, often devastating, effects on the down-drift shores. Moreover, they often do not constitute environmentally and financially attractive solutions for long stretches of eroding shoreline. Engineers and scientists practising design and implementation of shore defence schemes have been aware for many years of the public demand for improved shore protection technologies. They are encouraging efforts that promise enrichment of those environmentally sound and financially attractive methods that can be safely applied.

Download or read book Coastal Hazards written by Charles W. Finkl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 839 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the gamut of coastal hazards that result from short-term low-frequency events and have high-magnitude and far-reaching impacts on coastal zones the world over. Much of the world’s population now lives in low-lying coastal zones that are inherently vulnerable to natural hazards such as flooding from hurricanes, tropical storms and northeastern storm surges; shoreline (beach and dune) erosion; cliff and bluff failures; and saltwater intrusion in coastal aquifers used for drinking water supplies. In addition to the usual range of hydrometeorological disasters in coastal zones, this book covers tsunami impacts and warning systems as well as global perspectives of sea-level rise impacts and human perceptions of potential vulnerabilities resulting from rip currents that cause many drownings each year on beaches. Today, the use of numerical models that help predict vulnerabilities and provide a basis for shore protection measures is important in modern scientific and engineering systems. Final considerations focus on human actions in the form of the urbanization and industrialization of the coast, shore protection measures, and indicate how environmental degradation around coastal conurbations exacerbates the potential for unwanted impacts. Strategies for environmental management in coastal zones, from low-lying wetlands to high cliffs and rocky promontories, are highlighted as a means of living in harmony with Nature and not trying to conquer it.

Book Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering Fourth Edition

Download or read book Hydraulics in Civil and Environmental Engineering Fourth Edition written by Andrew John Chadwick and published by CRC Press. Book excerpt: The third edition of this best-selling textbook combines thorough coverage of fundamental theory with a wide ranging treatment of contemporary applications. The chapters on sediment transport, river engineering, wave theory and coastal engineering have been extensively updated, and there is a new chapter on computational modelling. The authors illustrate applications of computer and physical simulation techniques in modern design. The book is an invaluable resource for students and practitioners of civil, environmental, and public health engineering and associated disciplines. It is comprehensive, fully illustrated and contains many worked examples, taking a holistic view of the water cycles, many aspects of which are critical for future sustainable development.
