Book The Battle for North Carolina s Coast

Download or read book The Battle for North Carolina s Coast written by Stanley R. Riggs and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2011-09-05 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Carolina barrier islands, a 325-mile-long string of narrow sand islands that forms the coast of North Carolina, are one of the most beloved areas to live and visit in the United States. However, extensive barrier island segments and their associated wetlands are in jeopardy. In The Battle for North Carolina's Coast, four experts on coastal dynamics examine issues that threaten this national treasure. According to the authors, the North Carolina barrier islands are not permanent. Rather, they are highly mobile piles of sand that are impacted by sea-level rise and major storms and hurricanes. Our present development and management policies for these changing islands are in direct conflict with their natural dynamics. Revealing the urgency of the environmental and economic problems facing coastal North Carolina, this essential book offers a hopeful vision for the coast's future if we are willing to adapt to the barriers' ongoing and natural processes. This will require a radical change in our thinking about development and new approaches to the way we visit and use the coast. Ultimately, we cannot afford to lose these unique and valuable islands of opportunity. This book is an urgent call to protect our coastal resources and preserve our coastal economy.

Every county in South Carolina is featured with an appealing illustration of its iconic and lesser-known sites--historical, geographical, topographical, industrial and commercial, and more. Companion text identifies and provides context for the pictured elements. The book provides a comprehensive educational snapshot of all that is special about the Palmetto State. From the colonial plantations of the Upstate to the picturesque marshes of the Lowcountry and the lazy Edisto River meandering its way through the state; from big cities like Columbia and Greenville to the vibrant coastal communities of Charleston and Beaufort, South Carolina is as beautiful and historic as it is diverse. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COASTAL: Relaxing Coloring Pages Enjoy these ocean themed, hand - drawn coloring pages! There are 40 original designs, printed twice for a total of 80 pages. Designs are printed single-sided to prevent color bleeding through to the other designs, which also makes them ideal for framing. The book is geared towards intermediate-advanced creatives, but can be enjoyed by any age. If you've ever bought a "grown up coloring book" and quickly became frustrated because the spaces were too small to color or a single design took you a year to finish, you won't have that problem with this book! I've kept that in mind as I was hand drawing each page. My focus was to provide a variety of detail and design, as well as enough space to actually color. Different from other coloring books on the market, these designs feature a "scene" instead of a circular mandala. Favorite themes include starfish, seahorses, seashells, lighthouses, waves, coconuts, palm trees, turtles, sting rays, and sharks to name a few! Suggested coloring materials: crayons, thin markers, gel pens, colored pencils... but get creative! Inspired by beautiful South Florida and the Atlantic Ocean, I truly hope this book is a reminder for you to appreciate the world around you, and to intentionally value and make time for rest. I can't wait to see your creations! Share them below, along with a helpful comment. Download or read book A Coat of Many Colors written by Walter Conser and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2006-09-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While religious diversity is often considered a recent phenomenon in America, the Cape Fear region of southeastern North Carolina has been a diverse community since the area was first settled. Early on, the region and the port city of Wilmington were more urban than the rest of the state and thus provided people with opportunities seldom found in other parts of North Carolina. This area drew residents from many ethnic backgrounds, and the men and women who settled there became an integral part of the region’s culture. Set against the backdrop of national and southern religious experience, A Coat of Many Colors examines issues of religious diversity and regional identity in the Cape Fear area. Author Walter H. Conser Jr. draws on a broad range of sources, including congregational records, sermon texts, liturgy, newspaper accounts, family memoirs, and technological developments to explore the evolution of religious life in this area. Beginning with the story of prehistoric Native Americans and continuing through an examination of life at the end of twentieth century, Conser tracks the development of the various religions, denominations, and ethnic groups that call the Cape Fear region home. From early Native American traditions to the establishment of the first churches, cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, and temples, A Coat of Many Colors offers a comprehensive view of the religious and ethnic diversity that have characterized Cape Fear throughout its history. Through the lens of regional history, Conser explores how this area’s rich religious and racial diversity can be seen as a microcosm for the South, and he examines the ways in which religion can affect such diverse aspects of life as architecture and race relations.
