With a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he flew operational missions—including carrier landings—in A-l Skyraiders and E-l Tracers. He qualified in more than a dozen other types of Navy aircraft, including F-9 Cougars. He served two tours as flight instructor in his ten years with the Navy. In 1965, following his return from a Vietnam tour at Yankee Station, Mr. Beard entered the Coast Guard. He flew in SAR operations in the HU-16E Albatross, the C-130 Hercules, and the HH-52A Seaguard. He qualified as a seaplane pilot, a shipboard helicopters pilot, and a Coast Guard standardization pilot, accumulating more than 6,000 military flight hours during his career. Mr. Beard holds an FAA airline transport pilot rating and a commercial helicopter rating, plus a Coast Guard master’s license for inspected vessels. After retiring in 1975, Mr. Beard returned to college, earning a master’s degree in history from Western Washington University in Bellingham. Following employment as a museum director, he turned back to the sea, in sailboats. Over the past twenty years, he and his wife, Carolyn, have sailed nearly 150,000 miles and visited about fifty countries as they’ve circled the world one and a half times. Mr. Beard takes vacations from these voyages to return home to research and write articles in his field of maritime history.

Book I Never Liked Those C 130 s Anyway

Download or read book I Never Liked Those C 130 s Anyway written by Terry Wilbur Smith and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Your chance to relive a little piece of "The Good Old Days" and find the answers to these burning questions: Which future Coast Guard Captain said "Shit, Mal, let's do a 360 and get out of here." Which Coast Guard astronaut said, when asked to describe his scariest moment, "Flying as Malcolm Smith's co-pilot." Which Coast Guard aviator got the blame for putting training wheels and streamers on the commanding officer's and XO's new bicycles. Which Coast Guard aviator threw up in his glove while flying rather than make a mess in the cockpit. This book brings back some of the funniest moments of the Coast Guard during the time period between the "Old Guard" and the new modern Coast Guard. "For more than two decades, Mal has threatened to write a book to chronicle his many colorful experiences during his Coast Guard aviation career. Mal can spin a tale better than any sailor and his exploits in and out of the cockpit are indeed legendary. But the fact is, the closer he gets to the completion of this life-long dream of his, the more nervous I become. I can't wait to read it!" RADM David W. Kunkel, COAST GUARD AVIATOR #1726 "Malcolm Smith is a master storyteller with a flair for finding humor in everyday activities and recounting his observations with entertaining splendor that leaves you thirsting for another. Since meeting him when I was a teenager in Alaska, I have been absorbed by his colorful renditions and have long awaited this composition. I just hope I'm not the subject in one of his stories." CAPT. E. Darrell Nelson, COMMANDING OFFICER, CGAS KODIAK

This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Float Planes and Flying Boats is the first and only written history describing the Coast Guard's contribution to early Naval Aviation's development. There is a Naval Aviator bond between Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps aviators that was initiated when the three service aviation communities joined in a major Joint Operation from 1914 to 1938 to develop and grow Naval Aviation. That bond drives each service to cooperate and support each other. For example, Coast Guard and Marine Corps aviators receive flight training at the Navy Training Command in Pensacola, and the Navy loaned the Coast Guard many of their first aircraft and gave land and facilities that became early Coast Guard air stations. The Coast Guard contributed to Navy activities that established Navy war-fighting capabilities, and provided engineering design and tests for seaplanes and aircraft carrier powder catapults and arresting gear. The only difference on the Naval Aviator Roster is USN, USCG, and USMC after their names. For example, Lieutenant Stone was Naval Aviator number 38, and 20 years later was also assigned Coast Guard Aviator number 1.

Download or read book The Grit Factor written by Shannon Huffman Polson and published by Harvard Business Press. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take for women to succeed in a male-dominated world? The Grit Factor. At age nineteen, Shannon Huffman Polson became the youngest woman ever to climb Denali, the highest mountain in North America. She went on to reach the summits of Mt. Rainier and Mt. Kilimanjaro and spent more than a decade traveling the world. Yet it was during her experience serving as one of the Army's first female attack helicopter pilots, and eventually leading an Apache flight platoon on deployment to Bosnia-Herzegovina, that she learned the lessons of leadership that forever changed her life. Where did these insights come from? From her own crucibles of experience—and from other women. In writing The Grit Factor, Polson made it her mission to connect with an elite pack of tough, impressive female iconoclasts who shared with her their candid stories of combat and career. This slate of decorated leaders includes Heather Penney, one of the first female F-16 pilots, who was put on a suicide mission for 9/11; General Ann Dunwoody, the first female four-star general in the Army; Amy McGrath, the first female Marine to fly the F/A-18 in combat and a 2020 candidate for the US Senate—and dozens of other unstoppable women who got there first, including Polson herself. These women led at the highest levels in the most complicated, challenging, and male-dominated organization in the world. Now, in the post–#MeToo era, when positive role models of women leading are needed as never before, Polson brings these voices together, sharing her own life lessons and theirs with storytelling flair, keen insight, and incisive analysis of current research. With its gripping narrative and relatable takeaways, The Grit Factor is both inspiring and pragmatic, a book that will energize and enlighten current and aspiring leaders everywhere—whether male or female.
