Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemical Scythe is the first book in a projected series to be published by Plenum Press in association with the International Disaster Institute. The aim of the series, Disaster Research in Practice, is to provide scientific and readable accounts on the most urgent areas of disaster research. It is fitting, therefore, that Dr. Hay's investigation into the nature and effects of dioxins heralds the new series. The problem of chemical hazards is one that we will have to learn to live with in future decades. Dr. Hay's book is an authoritative account of the chemistry and proven and potential effects of dioxins, and of the impli cations for safety planning. He concludes with a cautious, yet optimistic note-that indeed we can learn to live with such hazards, providing that we are prepared to understand and plan for the unexpected. The accident at Seveso in 1976 alerted the world to an imperfectly un derstood but immensely alarming environmental hazard. Public debate and argument as to the implications of dioxins and, indeed, the use of herbicides as aggressive weapons in Vietnam, rage on. And yet it is only through the painstaking research exemplified in this book that it will eventually be pos sible to promote the vital accountability on the part of industrialists and governments.

Book Pit to Power Station

Download or read book Pit to Power Station written by Chris Booth and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2022-04-08 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the 1990s as a decade of change, all of the collieries and most of the coal fired power stations of that era have now gone. During that decade I made a point of photographing the collieries and power stations, and the trains that moved the coal, and so amassed a large collection of photographs. Being Worksop-based through my railway career, I am able to describe a potted history of Worksop Depot which opened in 1991, commencing with a brief look at the area in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. The run-up to the privatisation of the railways is followed by the new freight companies which brought changes in coal operations, before the wholesale decline in coal production. There are images taken in the Nott’s, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, and Staffordshire coalfields. Brief descriptions of each colliery and power station illustrated are given, with maps to show their location, along with power station track diagrams, tables, and coal plans to show where power station coal originated. The book concludes with a few instances of locations that Worksop-based drivers served.

Book Waste Not Want Not

Download or read book Waste Not Want Not written by Robert Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No-one wants toxic waste dumped in their back yard. Dioxins and furans from incinerators, dangerous chemicals leaching from landfill sites and the apparently random dumping of nuclear waste are all clear threats to our health and lives. In fact any waste not properly dealt with can become dangerous - yet industry and state seem to collude recklessly in its production. Robert Allen describes the waste produced in Britain and Ireland and the woefully inadequate means of dealing with it. He looks, too, at governmental intransigence and dishonesty and at industry's refusal to consider the needs of local communities. He also gives an account of the available legislation governing toxic waste and the degree to which it will need radical change in the face of a rapidly growing problem. Waste dumping impinges on people's lives, and he examines some of the very successful campaigns against the many ill-considered dumping grounds. As governments only respond to pressure, there are valuable lessons to be learnt from these campaigns. This book sets out the nature of the problem and provides a basis on which to tackle it.
