Book Mining Costs of the World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mining Costs of the World: A Compilation of Cost and Other Important Data on the World's Principal Mines The writers have long believed that there is need for a book of this char acter, embodying in condensed form costs and other important operating data on the metal mines of the world. This book, which covers about three hundred and twenty-five metal mines, is not a text but a compilation of results actually Obtained at the various properties shown therein. It should be of material assistance to the engineer, manager, superintendent, operator and student. We realize that nearly every mining man has his own notebook, but rarely are these data complete and conveniently arranged in pocket book form. The examining engineer and Operator frequently find it difficult to Obtain reliable data in camps they are visiting. This book gives the desired information, embody ing as it does most of the principal camps of the world: It is evident that no just comparison can be drawn between any two mines, as no two are Operated under identical conditions. In a great major ity of cases we have given Operating results for several years. There is a constant aim to increase production with decreasing costs, but as this is not a rapid nor radical movement figures from year to year undergo very slight changes. It is our intention, however, from time to time to augment the book, adding new mines to the list, later data and more complete information. In order to be able to continue paying these high wage costs, coal operators must have relief from the present unbelievable abuse of the so-called willing and able buncombe; they must have a chance to give coal consumers some semblance of dependable coal supply. It has been the aim of the author to give reliable information free from minute details and technicalities. That information has been, for the most part, gathered through personal experience in_ithe mines. Literature of this special subject is very meagre, and the author is unable to acknowledge any real indebtedness to more than half a dozen volumes. First among these is the valuable treatise on Coal Mining, by H. M. Chance of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey. Other volumes from which the author has derived considerable information are the State geological reports of Pennsylvania, the mine in. Download or read book Bituminous Coal Mine Accounting Classic Reprint written by W. B. Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bituminous Coal Mine Accounting The importance of proper accounting has probably never been more clearly felt than at the present time. The necessity for having an adequate cost accounting system has been stressed within the past few years by trade associations, government agencies and accountants generally. In the coal industry this was a particularly important subject during the recent war, sales prices being fixed by the Fuel Ad ministration based ou cost. At all times a knowledge of the cost of production is an absolute prerequisite to price making. A corporation without a cost system is like a ship without a com pass. Business is conducted for the purpose of making a profit, and the business man is entitled to a margin between his cost and selling price. An adequate cost finding system is intended to' eliminate guess work. To be of value to the industry such a cost system should be more than a historical record of trans actions long closed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Coal Mining The science of mining so largely consists of practical applications of geology, mechanics, physics, chemistry, and other branches of natural knowledge, that it has proved difficult in many cases to decide what acquaintance with these subjects on the part of the reader to take for granted. The author is hopeful that sufficient information has been given to make the book self-explanatory, but students are urged to study these collateral sciences as fully as circum stances permit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Coal Mining, Vol. 1 All errors, typographical and otherwise, that we have dis covered in the first edition have been corrected. In a num ber Of instances we have altered the text somewhat, when by doing so we thought we could make the explanation clearer to the students. We have changed the page num bers in all the volumes except Vols. IV and V, so that each paper and part will begin with 1, instead Of numbering the pages continuously throughout the volumes, as in the first edition. In order to make the indexes intelligible we have given each paper and part a number. This number has been placed on the headline Of each page opposite the page number and to distinguish it from the page number it has been preceded by the printer's section mark Gonse quently, a reference such as 19, page 12, would be readily found as follows The back stamps on the first three vol umes show the sections (i. E., Papers) included in' the volumes, that for Vol. II reading 11 - 21 hence, look at the inside edges Of the headlines to Vol. II until 19 is found, and then through 19 until page 12 is found. The Question Papers have been given the same section numbers as the Instruction Papers to which they belong, and are grouped together at the end of the volume contain ing the Instruction Papers to which they refer. The Keys have been numbered in the same manner. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Burat, Mr. Dunn, Mr. Greenwell, Mr. Hedley, and to other works mentioned in my text, I trust that this little introduction to Coal-mining bears internal evidence of not being mere extract of books, and that - whilst intended mainly to convey sound informa tion to the unpractised - it may, nevertheless, contain matter of interest for viewers and overmen, to a long list of whom I have to express my thanks for many an instructive and agreeable day underground. Book Coal Mining

Download or read book Coal Mining written by Thomas H. Walton and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal Mining: Described and Illustrated To extract coal from seams lying on low inclinations has been very successfully practised in the older mining countries. In some of the provinces of France, where the coal seams incline upwards of 70, and which are comparatively thick, much difficulty was formerly experienced in attempts made to mine out the coal entirely. Galleries driven into the coal seams horizontally, with pillars of certain widths left between them, resulted in much of the coal being lost, after it was detached from the pillars. It was then often buried by the rocks which caved in near the ends of these pillars. This occasioned a change to the present system of working by remblais, which seems to be a plan well adapted to the taking out of the coal of highly inclined coal seams. Ventilation of coal mines is treated in the following pages only in the most practical manner. To comprehend the fine points connected with mine ventilation on an extensive scale, an accurate knowledge of pneumatics with much practical experience is absolutely necessary. Absurdities connected with this important subject have floated into the works of very eminent writers, and it will not be an easy task to eradicate them. The chief difficulties in the way of practical ventilation of mines seem to consist in the maintenance of the air-passages of sufficient size free from obstructions, and in the resistance met with by air-currents moving with high velocities. Trusting that the succeeding pages will be found of use to the student of coal mining and to the operator of coal mines and the owners of coal lands, and that they may be of interest to the general reader as well, the author passes them over to the public with a consciousness of having thus done something towards performing his duty towards his fellow man. Obviously the taxpayer is not entitled to recover or extinguish through amortization more than the difference between the war cost of such property and what he can sell the property for after the war, or if he continues to need and use it in his business, what it would have cost him after the war. Book Practical Coal Mining

Download or read book Practical Coal Mining written by George L. Kerr and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Coal Mining: A Manual for Managers, Under-Managers, Colliery Engineers, and Others Not many years ago the works on Coal-Mining were few, and in most instances so expensive as to be beyond the reach of the ordinary student or practical miner. This state of affairs has been to a large extent remedied of recent years by the issue of several works of more moderate dimensions and price. Between the small elementary textbook and the still large and comparatively costly work of reference, however, there yet remains a considerable gap which it has been the Authors endeavour in this volume to fill. The best authorities have been freely consulted and, with due acknowledgment, laid under contribution; while the latest methods of working and the most modern machinery have been described, with the object of presenting an up-to-date account of the important industry under consideration. Since the publication of the excellent treatise by Jonathan Hyslop, thirty years ago, no text-book dealing to any extent with Scottish practice has, so far as the Author is aware, been published. As his experience has been gained largely in Scotland, he has attempted to remedy this omission, and it is to this that the occasional occurrence of a few Scotch words or phrases must be attributed, although these have been avoided, as far as possible when reference is made to methods prevailing elsewhere. Less attention has been paid to literary style and elegance than to the production of a thoroughly practical and plainly worded text-book, designed not only to aid those endeavouring to qualify themselves for positions as colliery managers and other responsible officials, but also as a daily guide and reference-book for all engaged in and about the Colliery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Coal Mining, Vol. 5: Tables and Formulas This volume contains all the principal Tables, Rules, and Formulas occurring in the Instruction Papers of the Course. They have been collected and placed in this volume in order to make them convenient for ready reference, so that the student will not be obliged to search the Instruction Papers to find them. The various Rules and Formulas are here grouped under the titles of the Instruction Papers in which they occur. Following each rule and formula are its number and also that of the article of the Instruction Paper in which it is discussed. These numbers may be readily found in the text by noting the section number on the headline at the top of the page. Thus: on page 91 of this volume we see that the formula for Discharge of Pump is followed by the number of the formula, and by Art. 2292, the arti cle in which it occurs; and that 21 is on the headline. Since 21 is in Vol. II, we look in Vol. II for 21, and through this section until Art. 2292 is found. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cost of Mining

Download or read book The Cost of Mining written by James Ralph Finlay and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cost of Mining: A Discussion of the Production of Minerals With Remarks on the Geologic, Social and Economic Foundations Upon Which It Rests During the long and various delays that occurred while the revision of this book was taking its present form the question was entertained whether it would not be fairer to author and readers to give it a different name altogether. It will be seen that it is no longer so narrowly technical as it originally was. But the question was answered in the negative. While it is true that some of the suggestions might, if properly presented, interest the public at large it seems at least as logical to believe that anything that will affect the mining public will affect the whole public. The gist of this idea is contained in a beginning at the revision made in 1917: "There are in the United States alone some two to three million men engaged in the mining and metallurgical industries. With their families and those who are engaged in supplying them with living necessities, that is to say, with the merchants, professional men, educators, etc. who are employed in mining communities, we may count on not less than twelve to fifteen million people who are dependent upon and therefore interested in those industries. This is twelve to fifteen percent. of the total population. If we apply this proportion to the whole English-speaking world, as we may fairly do, we find that at least 20,000,000 people are directly interested in mining and its cognate arts. When we consider that this number equals the white population of the British Empire of a century ago, it becomes evident that they make a field for literary effort larger, taking into account the growth of wealth and information, than that whole Empire could furnish at the end of the Napoleonic wars." This paragraph will illustrate the growth of the conviction that such a body must act upon public opinion, whether consciously or not, as inevitably as the forces of nature. It is therefore sufficient to ask indulgence of the mining public alone for interjecting among the obscure, sometimes trivial figures of mining operations certain suggestions of broader scope. I may quote again conveniently from the earlier paper: "It is necessary also to dwell upon the development of the human animal, intellectual, social and economic, which must take place in order to bring this industry into existence. Let us recall the obvious fact that to the Algonquin Indians who lived in Pennsylvania three centuries ago the anthracite coal fields were not worth the hide of a single deer, and to those same Algonquins the Calumet and Hecla was not as valuable as a boulder of float copper. Then there is the history of these developments. How and why did great mining districts come into the possession of those who now own them and work in them? How do these owners and workers live and what is their outlook upon the rest of the world?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Coal Mining Institute of America, Pittsburgh, Pa, 1907 Again: Has the loss in mining been taken into considera tion? If not, this would materially reduce the period estimated as being the life of the coal fields. There is much uncertainty as to what per cent. Of loss in mining is, and I fear it is going to be much greater than suspected. We often hear the statement made that 95 per cent. Of the coal area now under operation is being recovered. I think this statement is probably far re moved from the truth. I will grant that at some Operations 95 per cent. Of the coal is, perhaps, being recovered, but there cer tainly are cases, even now, where 75 per cent. Is not being gotten. The various estimates referred to are certainly of great interest and value, and should be reminders that the coal seams of this State, and of all the coal bearing States, should be most care fully mined, and that no losses should be allowed that can pos sibly be avoided in mining the coal and removing it from the position it has occupied since its formation. I think some papers on these lines would not be amiss and would suggest that some one volunteer to take up this work for presentation at our winter meeting.
