Download or read book Experiences and Perceptions of Female Athletic Trainers Working with Male Coaches in Male Sports written by Sierra Hobday and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Context: Female athletic trainers are making great strides in a previously male-dominated profession and are also becoming more prevalent in working with male sports teams. Female athletic trainers working within male sports often face gender bias and discrimination which has been found to come from male coaches of these sports. While previous studies have shown male coaches may demonstrate practices of gender bias towards female athletic trainers working in male sports, no studies have focused directly on the male coach and female athletic trainer relationship. Purpose: To examine the experiences and perceptions of female athletic trainers currently working with male coaches in male sports in the NCAA and examine the male coach-female athletic trainer relationship from the point of view of the athletic trainer. Design: Qualitative research utilizing a multiple case study design. Methods: Six collegiate female athletic trainers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview format via Zoom. Participants were asked questions that aimed to gain information regarding female athletic trainers’ experiences and perceptions of working with male coaches in male sports and information about the interactions between the two parties. Interview transcripts were coded and analyzed by the research committee. Results: Four themes emerged from participant responses which included the background of the female athletic trainer, advantages of working with male coaches in male sports, challenges faced and navigation of challenges, and factors for success in current role and relationship. Conclusions: Overall, participants described having a good relationship with their male coaches and numerous factors were identified as playing a role in that relationship. This study revealed how one’s background and prior relationships and experiences can shape current ones, and identified different advantages and challenges present for female athletic trainers working with a male coach in a male sport. Advantages included having a differing view from one another, as well as acts of chivalry, and male coaches having higher standards and being taken more seriously. Challenges faced included gender, age, and experience. Furthermore, participants offered valuable insights of how to tackle those challenges and provided factors for success within their roles and relationships with male coaches in male sports.

Book Division III Athlete Attitudes Toward Male Female and Non binary Strength and Conditioning Coaches

Download or read book Division III Athlete Attitudes Toward Male Female and Non binary Strength and Conditioning Coaches written by Emily Nitzsche and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a quantitative approach, the researcher investigated the attitudes of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III (D3) men’s (n = 69) and women’s (n = 53) sports student-athletes (SAs). This study aimed to examine the current attitudes of male, female, and non-binary NCAA D3 SAs towards male, female, and non-binary strength and conditioning coaches (SCCs). Attitudes were assessed for 121 participants via a 12- question modified Attitudes of Athletes Toward Male versus Female Coaches Questionnaire (AAMFC-Q; Magnusen & Rhea, 2009) consisting of Likert-scaled questions ranking feelings towards a described, gendered SCC. The researcher determined there to be no significant interactions between gendered sport and condition, suggesting that previously noted SCC gender preferences no longer prevail in D3 athletics. However, via main effects significant differences between gendered sport was noted when participants were prompted with considering how they would feel about the hypothetical coach’s ability to motivate and encourage them. Additionally, significant differences between conditions were noted in items examining the participants’ ability to take punishment from the hypothetical coach and, when directly asked if they preferred the gender of the described coach. The findings of the present study are pertinent to practitioners and administrators working with SCCs and SAs of varying gender identities. Professionals involved in the strength and conditioning training of D3 student-athletes can use the results of the current study to inform hiring decisions, when educating staff and athletes, and to better understand the athletes' feelings towards SCCs. Additionally, involved personnel should consider this evidence of the prevailing existence of hegemonic masculinity in athletics and evaluate how they may work to dissuade the continuance of such.

Book Female Athletic Trainers Working with Male Division I Teams

Download or read book Female Athletic Trainers Working with Male Division I Teams written by Michele Hudgins and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite representing half of all certified athletic trainers in the United States, females tend to not staff male teams at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level. To date, there has not been much research on female athletic trainers (ATs), especially in positions such as head athletic trainer of a Division I school or at the professional level. Rather, the few studies that have been conducted have focused on the work-life conflict female ATs face and its relationship to higher attrition rates from the profession. The current study extended the examination of female ATs by exploring the experiences of female athletic trainers who currently staff or have previously staffed (within the past 5 years) male Division I teams through the lens of hegemonic masculinity. Findings suggest that gender stereotypes and sex roles, various levels and types of support, and mentors/role models influenced participant experiences. These findings suggest possible causes of higher attrition rates for women than men in the athletic training field besides work-family conflict and suggest a new avenue of research to be explored further.

Book NCAA Division I Coaches and Athletic Trainers

Download or read book NCAA Division I Coaches and Athletic Trainers written by Laura Hassen Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study was to explore coaches' experience with athletic trainers (ATs) and knowledge of their roles and responsibilities at the NCAA Division I level. The data collection involved a questionnaire and follow-up phone interviews. The survey was sent out to all 144 official head coaches of NCAA Division I universities in the Bay Area region of California, as defined by the California Department of Social Services in 2002, and there was a 22% (n=31) return rate. Nearly 60% (n=18) of coaches said they communicated with their athletic trainer over five times per week. Another ~60% (n=20-n=28) of the participants correctly identified all of the competencies under each domain of the athletic training profession. Of the 31 participants who participated in the survey, four participated in the follow-up interviews. The data from the follow-up interviews were organized into four higher order themes: qualities of the relationship between the AT and the coach, coaches' desired personality traits of an AT, qualities of the AT as a professional, and causes of conflict between the AT and coach. The participating coaches provided evidence that they are well versed in the profession of athletic training and have strong knowledge regarding the roles and responsibilities that are designated under this profession's scope of practice. In addition, all the coaches emphasized the importance of good communication within a professional relationship.

Book Bridging the Gap Between Men s and Women s Athletic Training Programs

Download or read book Bridging the Gap Between Men s and Women s Athletic Training Programs written by Bryn Saunders and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis determines insufficiencies in training female athletes exist and presents recommendations for how these insufficiencies should be corrected. This problem is analyzed through a historical and scientific lens and uses information learned from several interviews with current coaching staff regarding female athlete training. Title IX is commonly recognized as the vanguard of women's athletics, however, it caused unintended consequences female athletes suffer: insufficient representation, discrimination, and commercialization. Research on scientific studies regarding female athletes shows more data are needed to prevent and treat injuries that female athletes experience. However, studies prove that female athletes experience injuries to certain parts of the body more often than men, which makes protecting female athletes an imperative. Coaches have an ethical obligation to train athletes properly, so to ensure that coaches get the training right, I recommend guidelines and standards rooted in bioethics principles of beneficence, nonmaleficence, and autonomy. Beneficence calls for coaches to further the best interests of athletes by using the best available skills and knowledge so athletes can perform to the best of their ability, not only athletically, but academically and socially. Autonomy calls for coaches to refrain from coercing athletes. Nonmaleficence calls for coaches to avoid causing harm to athletes. While guidelines rooted in these principles provide an essential framework for athletic programs, enforceable guidelines--standards--make coaches accountable to provide adequate training programs and warrant coaches to make decisions centered around furthering the best interest of the athlete. While these standards do not fix all problems and inequities regarding female athletics, they bring about issues beyond medicine and present improvements which may be necessary to protect all athletes' health and well-being.
