Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...In The Nick Of Time...Everything is in God's Timing" Especially to those who wait humbly on him for their answers to come. This novel I wrote has details about a struggling positive thinking girl named Nicole (Nick) who grew up around a negative environment full of rapes, drug trades and fights. Her mother, Isis, didnt make her life any easier. Who would have thought that her own mother was the one who hooked Nicole up with the crack dealer, Mike, just to pay off the tab from the drugs that her mother owed. After Nicole realized what her mother had done and leaving Mike's body for dead, her mother became more furious of Nicole, told her she would amount to nothing, hit Nicole so hard in the jaw that it knocked her off her feet and drove her to leave the house. Nicole left the house with a few items, but left a package that was worth a lot behind. What was it? Did she get it in good timing? Who did she meet? Sometimes it may feel like we are fighting battles that no one can win, but as for Nicole Salina Lewis...she knew that even throughout all the struggles, she was determined to find a better life for herself. Have patience in life, and the answer will come.

Book excerpt: Along the way, somebody invented the jump shot and the crossover dribble and added a three-point line. Times changed, the game was integrated, players grew taller and more wildly athletic. That evolution is chronicled in Glory Days, as 50 of the state's best high school basketball players from the past five decades sit down to chat with longtime prep basketball scribe Taylor Bell. Every last one of the featured players was an all-state selection. Some led their teams to state titles; others were chosen as Illinois' Mr. Basketball; many were named McDonald's All-Americans.Glory Days pulls its roster from all regions of the state: from southern Illinois (Edwardsville, Centralia, Mount Vernon) to the state's waist (Galesburg, Peoria, Decatur) to north of I-80 (Rockford, Evanston, and many Chicago schools). Each player on the roster relives his time on the high school hardwood, but also reveals what happened after he walked down the aisle in his cap and gown. Bell catches up with greats like Mannie Jackson, Dave Downey, Jay Shidler, Jack Sikma, Rashard Griffith, Cazzie Russell, Kiwane Garris, Cuonzo Martin, and Billy Ridley, and discovers what happened to these legends later in life, after their hops deserted them. Their Chuck Taylors may be a distant memory, but for each of these former stars, basketball has continued to hold a special place in their heart.

Book excerpt: The history of basketball spans more than a century, from its humble origin as a simple diversion during the harsh winters in America to today's perennial, rim-rattling show of international renown. Throughout the last 60 years, Pennsylvania has been at the forefront of the sports evolution, supplying the world with a steady stream of stars, from Wilt Chamberlain to Kobe Bryant, who have proven to be some of the best to ever play the game. In Heads of State: Pennsylvanias Greatest High School Basketball Players of the Modern Era, sportswriter Mark Hostutler sizes up the commonwealth to rank its 500 most-accomplished scholastic players from 1950-2010. With input from Sonny Vaccaro, Howard Garfinkel, and other hoops cognoscenti, the author canvassed the Keystone State, conducting hundreds of hours of research and interviews to assemble a list that is sure to stir passionate debate within an already buzzing community of roundball fans. Hostutlers unique compilation highlights the exploits of Billy Owens, Tom McMillen, Gene Banks, Tyreke Evans, Donyell Marshall, Jameer Nelson, Geoff Petrie, and several others, as they reminisce about their achievements as teenagers on the hardwood. Book All Guts and No Glory

Download or read book All Guts and No Glory written by Bill Elder and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2007-09-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the recent film Glory Road reminded, the early desegregation of college sports often was neither easy nor pleasant. Here Bill Elder recalls how he and a courageous group of white and black student-athletes broke racial barriers at a small college in northeast Alabama in the early 1970s. The setting was Sand Mountain, an area which four decades earlier had given rise to the Scottsboro Boys case, and where racial attitudes for some had not changed much. Elder has recently retired from a successful career as a college sports administrator, but here he shows vividly why he sometimes wondered whether he and his players would live through their experience. Abandoned by their school officials, the players faced constant threats and harassment and occasional violence. But they kept playing and winning games and forging bonds between themselves that lasted long after that first season was over. Through it all, Elder, an Alabama native and lifelong Baptist, watches his community with both a loving and an objective eye. His brief eyewitness account of both the worst and best elements of Southerners during this tumultuous era is compelling testimony.
