Book Food for Thought

Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to understand changes in the macro policy environment of organisations dealing with agriculture and agribusiness activities in South Asia. The main proposition of this study is that on account of limited opportunities for global agricultural trade in the pre-WTO period, and the 'autarkic' agricultural policy followed by most countries in South Asia. The main emphasis of 'development plans' was on self-sufficiency in agriculture, national food security and adequate availability of food through the Public Distribution System. Strengthening the export competitiveness of agriculture in the regional or global market was not a conscious strategy. However, this paradigm of national protection and self-sufficiency has been completely reversed by the provisions of the WTO, which has opened new opportunities for trade liberalisation. South Asia has to respond to the challenges of the WTO, and in this process, latent business opportunities within the region will come to the fore. This study suggests that agribusiness organisations in the region must anticipate these changes and prepare themselves for the coming years. It points out that while state supported agribusiness organisations will be adversely affected on account of the liberalisation manifesto which most South Asian nations have adopted, other forms of agribusiness organisations, especially co-operatives and private enterprises will get the opportunity to flourish. Sanjeev Chopra (born 1961) studied Literature and History at Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar and Jawahar Lal Nehru University New Delhi. He wrote for Times of India and Economic Times before joining the Indian Adminstrative Service in 1985. He held the Robert S McNmara fellowship of the World Bank (1998-99) and the Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship at University of Cornell(1999-00). He is currently on the faculty of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussorie.

Book Environmental Policy Governance and Politics

Download or read book Environmental Policy Governance and Politics written by Prakash Chand Kandpal and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the development-environment discourse in India and examines the multi-layered interaction between society and nature in the light of the role of the state, judiciary and the civil society. Through an array of perspectives, the volume challenges the conventional approach to understanding the environmental politics in South Asia without considering the role of the civil society and other informal actors, which has radically altered the conventional articulation of the phenomenon. The volume underlines distinct structural characteristics of developmental politics in India and the social concerns and challenges which come in the way of environmental policy and governance in India. It is a meaningful intervention in unearthing significant socio-political and economic processes which are critical to the environmental governance in India. The book will not only be helpful in studying the state of policy, administration and politics of environmental discourse in India, but also guide the policymakers to explore the sustainable ways of environmental governance in South Asia. Insightful and lucid, this book will be useful to the students, researchers and faculty working in the field of political science, public administration, public policy, political sociology, political economy and governance studies. It will also be an invaluable and interesting reading for those interested in South Asian studies.

Download or read book THE EFFECT OF IRON ORE MINING ON ENVIRONMENT IT S REGULATION IN INDIA written by Dr. ARAVINDA H.T., LL.M, M.Phil, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Law Visveswarapura College of Law Bengaluru and published by Nitya Publications. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining refers to the process of extracting minerals and metals from the crust of the earth. Some minerals can be mined more easily as they are found on the earth’s surface, while others lie far beneath the surface and can be obtained only by digging deep underground. Gold, Silver, Diamond, Iron, Coal, Aluminum (Bauxite) and Uranium are some of the vast array of metals and minerals that are obtained by the latter process. In fact, mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining, in its wider sense connotes extracting and processing of a non - renewable mineral resource. Minerals can be classified into metallic (iron, copper, gold, aluminum, uranium etc.) and non-metallic (sand, salt, phosphates etc.) These minerals are non-renewable or depleting assets and once mined-out, they are exhausted and are lost forever without any chance of replenishment. Simply, this exhaustible resource cannot be harvested, unlike agricultural products.

In short, this book brings together the problems of the current world and sustainable solutions that are in the development process and will eventually materialize in the not so distant future. Additionally, the book presents a trans-disciplinary analysis of integral sustainable maritime transportation solutions and crucial issues relevant to good ocean governance that have recently been discussed at different national, regional and international fora, highlighting ongoing work to develop and support governance systems that facilitate industry requirements, and meet the needs of coastal states and indigenous peoples, of researchers, of spatial planners, and of other sectors dependent on the oceans. The book will be of interest to researchers across many disciplines, especially those that are engaged in cross-sectoral research and developments in the maritime transport sector and across the wider maritime domain. To this end, the book covers areas including natural and social sciences, geographical studies, spatial planning, maritime security and gender studies, as they relate to transport and the wider maritime sector. In addition, the book explores frameworks for sustainable ocean governance being developed under the UN’s Agenda for Sustainable Development to 2030. It will also look beyond the 2030 milepost under that Agenda, and will be of use to national and international policymakers and practitioners, government actors at the EU and other regional and national levels and to researchers of ocean governance, sustainability and management, and maritime transport.

Book Foreign Investment Human Rights and the Environment

Download or read book Foreign Investment Human Rights and the Environment written by Shyami Puvimanasinghe and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Events like the Bhopal disaster, the sale of products harmful to human health and safety, and child labour, especially in resource-scarce settings, raise fundamental issues of human dignity and ecological integrity. From a legal perspective, and in the context of Foreign Direct Investment by Transnational Corporations in developing countries, they highlight the lacuna of a holistic international legal framework and its implementation. This book embodies a critique of the complex web of public international law principles on economics, human rights and the environment, and their convergence or lack thereof, related regional (South Asian) and domestic (Sri Lankan) legal arrangements, interventions of states and non-state actors towards just, equitable and sustainable development. It is a quest for a middle path in the multidisciplinary landscape of international law, development and North-South power dynamics; globalization of free trade and investment and of social and environmental interests; and salient aspects of the philosophical, socio-economic and legal fabric of South Asia, viewed against the evolving, controversial and elastic sphere of international relations and law where consensus has hitherto been an elusive dream.
