Book Cooperating Out of Poverty

Download or read book Cooperating Out of Poverty written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are omnipresent in Africa and represent a significant part of the private sector in most African countries. Successful and economically viable cooperatives create economic opportunities, provide a basic level of social protection and security, and provide their members with voice and representation. Yet, there are weaknesses and deficiencies of cooperatives in certain countries or sectors that result in poor performance. This book offers an objective analysis of the state of affairs of the cooperative sector in Africa since the liberalization of the economy in the early 1990s. It contains a historical overview of cooperative development in the continent and in-depth country studies that illustrate not only the structure and operation of the cooperative sector, but also analyse the major strengths and weaknesses of various cooperative undertakings in Africa. The aim of this book is to alert governments, donors and researchers to a fragmented, dispersed movement and make a case for the viability of cooperatives in Africa

Part one introduces the study giving background information on the research problem and question, and outlines the objectives and hypotheses, the research methodology, and the main features of the sample population. Part two deals with co-operative theory and the practice of co-operation. The research findings and accompanying analysis make up the third party and the majority of the study, while the fourth part discusses the studies results paying particular attention to cop-operative potential in rural development and the governments efforts towards the co-op revival. The fifth part concludes with recommendations on emerging policy implications and on the future of co-ops as instruments for poverty alleviation.

Book Encountering the Evidence

Download or read book Encountering the Evidence written by Frederick O. Wanyama and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discussion on the contribution of cooperatives to poverty reduction in Africa has quite often been based on their potential role rather than the actual impact, partly due to the dearth of empirical studies since the early 1990s. This paper provides evidence on the contribution of cooperatives to poverty reduction in Africa. Accordingly, it demonstrates that cooperatives have significantly contributed to the mobilization and distribution of financial capital; created employment and income-generating opportunities; constituted a forum for education and training; and set up solidarity schemes to cater for unexpected expenses related to illness, social welfare, death and other socio-economic problems.

Book Cooperatives in the Global Economy

Download or read book Cooperatives in the Global Economy written by Tapas R. Dash and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives in the Global Economy presents a unique collection of research-based chapters contributed by leading social and economic thinkers that provide critical insights into how the cooperative business model meets the challenges of the complex global problems in today’s competitive economy. Apart from theoretical arguments in favor of the value-based cooperative business model, this book presents the performance indicators of various forms of cooperatives, their potentialities, and challenges they face across borders. The contributors reexamine how cooperatives empower the marginalized population of the world by bringing them into the mainstream of socio-economic activities through creating employment opportunities, working towards alleviation of poverty, ensuring for more equitable distribution of scarce resources, and providing the basis for a sustainable economy and its meaningful growth. Today, in the global competitive economy, the challenges for cooperatives are enormous due to their particular value commitments, forms of incorporation, and organizational structures. In spite of the presence of several challenges, cooperatives promote economic growth and social justice. In this context, this book also presents the critical roles of cooperatives in balancing economic, social, and environmental concerns to build a better, equitable, and sustainable world.

Book Membership Based Organizations of the Poor

Download or read book Membership Based Organizations of the Poor written by Martha Chen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This highly topical volume, with contributions from leading experts in the field, explores a variety of questions about membership based organizations of the poor. Analyzing their success and failure and the internal and external factors that play a part, it uses studies from both developed and developing countries. Put together by a group of prestigious editors, the contributors address a range of questions, including: What structures and activities characterize MBOPs? What is meant by success and what factors account for success? What are the internal (governance structure and leadership) and external (policy environment) factors that account for success? Are these factors replicable across countries or even within countries? What are the constraints to successful MBOPs expanding, or to new ones being formed? What sort of policy environment enables the success of MBOPs and the formation of successful MBOPs? What types of institutional reforms are needed to ensure the representation of the poor through their own MBOs? This is an insightful work, that will be invaluable for students and researchers studying or working in the areas of international and development economics and development studies.

Book The Cooperative Movement

Download or read book The Cooperative Movement written by Richard C. Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Williams surveys the history of the cooperative movement from its origins in the 18th century and deals with the theory of cooperation, as contrasted with the 'Standard Economic Model', based on competition. The book contains the results of field studies of a number of successful cooperatives both in the developed and developing world. It includes insights from personal interviews of cooperative members and concludes by considering the successes and challenges of the cooperative movement as an alternative to the global neo-colonialism and imperialism that now characterizes free-market capitalist approaches to globalization. The book considers democratic and local control of essential economic activities such as the production, distribution, and retailing of goods and services. It suggests that cooperative approaches to these economic activities are already reducing poverty and resulting in equitable distributions of wealth and income without plundering the resources of developing countries.
