However since the co-operative re-establishment in 1982 to the present time that previous identity has been greatly eroded due to operational setbacks, mismanagement, confusion, and misdirection. This book is the result of a study of twenty-four randomly selected primary co-op societies in four regions. Part one introduces the study giving background information on the research problem and question, and outlines the objectives and hypotheses, the research methodology, and the main features of the sample population. Part two deals with co-operative theory and the practice of co-operation. The research findings and accompanying analysis make up the third party and the majority of the study, while the fourth part discusses the studies results paying particular attention to cop-operative potential in rural development and the governments efforts towards the co-op revival. The fifth part concludes with recommendations on emerging policy implications and on the future of co-ops as instruments for poverty alleviation.

Book Cooperating Out of Poverty

Download or read book Cooperating Out of Poverty written by International Labour Office and published by International Labour Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives are omnipresent in Africa and represent a significant part of the private sector in most African countries. Successful and economically viable cooperatives create economic opportunities, provide a basic level of social protection and security, and provide their members with voice and representation. Yet, there are weaknesses and deficiencies of cooperatives in certain countries or sectors that result in poor performance. This book offers an objective analysis of the state of affairs of the cooperative sector in Africa since the liberalization of the economy in the early 1990s. It contains a historical overview of cooperative development in the continent and in-depth country studies that illustrate not only the structure and operation of the cooperative sector, but also analyse the major strengths and weaknesses of various cooperative undertakings in Africa. The aim of this book is to alert governments, donors and researchers to a fragmented, dispersed movement and make a case for the viability of cooperatives in Africa

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cooperatives in the Global Economy presents a unique collection of research-based chapters contributed by leading social and economic thinkers that provide critical insights into how the cooperative business model meets the challenges of the complex global problems in today’s competitive economy. Apart from theoretical arguments in favor of the value-based cooperative business model, this book presents the performance indicators of various forms of cooperatives, their potentialities, and challenges they face across borders. The contributors reexamine how cooperatives empower the marginalized population of the world by bringing them into the mainstream of socio-economic activities through creating employment opportunities, working towards alleviation of poverty, ensuring for more equitable distribution of scarce resources, and providing the basis for a sustainable economy and its meaningful growth. Today, in the global competitive economy, the challenges for cooperatives are enormous due to their particular value commitments, forms of incorporation, and organizational structures. In spite of the presence of several challenges, cooperatives promote economic growth and social justice. In this context, this book also presents the critical roles of cooperatives in balancing economic, social, and environmental concerns to build a better, equitable, and sustainable world.
