Book Improving Livestock Marketing Efficiency

Download or read book Improving Livestock Marketing Efficiency written by Ira Moore Stevens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improving Livestock Marketing Efficiency: A Study of Nine Cooperative Livestock Markets in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan Each of the nine markets Operated a weekly auction. In addition most of them also sold some livestock primarily hogs on other days of the week. During the study, the facility layout and Opera tion of each was studied in detail and records showing volume of receipts and detailed costs and income were analyzed. This report thus shows comparisons of these nine markets. It also gives suggestions for improved efficiency based on these findings. It was not possible to make all the desired comparisons of costs because sufficient records had not been kept to show accurate costs by species. Also, the associations maintained different types of accounting systems. However there was enough similarity to adjust the records for definite comparisons of the major items. The nine markets varied widely in efficiency. A market might be doing a good job in one respect but have unduly high costs in another. For the most part the variation followed a pattern in line with the economies of scale concept; that is, the largest markets showed lowest costs and greatest efficiency. However, there were notable exceptions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Efficiency of Cooperative Livestock Shipping Associations in West Virginia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Efficiency of Cooperative Livestock Shipping Associations in West Virginia Classic Reprint written by Walter Wardlaw Armentrout and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Efficiency of Cooperative Livestock Shipping Associations in West Virginia Of cooperative shipping associations in West Virginia; to ex amine their efficiency as livestock marketing agencies; and to locate factors Of inefficiency, the elimination of which would make such associations more effective agencies for marketing livestock, not alone in West Virginia, but also in states where similar condi tions are found. Studies of cooperative livestock shipping associations have been made by experiment station workers in several states, chiefly where livestock is concentrated in large numbers. Many important princi ples have been established, some Of which need modification for proper application under the conditions peculiar to West Virginia, a livestock deficit area. The conditions under which livestock is produced and marketed in West Virginia are quite similar to those found in a larger area Of the Appalachian region. One outstanding difference between livestock production in this area and production in states where the most comprehensive studies of cooperative ship ping associations have been made is that while livestock production is among the chief agricultural enterprises Of West Virginia, the number produced per farm is comparatively small. It seemed worth while, therefore, to study the accomplishments of cooperative live stock shipping associations in an area where the number Of animals per farm is small, where the volume Of business for an association is necessarily limited, and where the marketing is highly seasonal. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Direct Marketing of Live Stock Settlement. - Live stock were first introduced into Canada by the early French settlers. In 1688 the number of live stock on. Farms in New France is given as cattle, sheep and swine.1' By 1765 the number of animals in Canada was shown to be oxen, young cattle, cows, sheep and swine.2 With the coming of. The United Empire Loyalists and the establishment of settlements in the Eastern Towns-hips of Quebec and in Ontario, live, stock were introduced into those sections of the country. The founding of the Red River settlement, during the early part of the nineteenth century, resulted in the introduction. Of cattle west of the Great Lakes. During the early stages of development, live stock were slaughtered mainly for home consumption, the surplus meat finding an outlet In the adjoining towns and lumber camps and to a limited extent in export trade. Cattle were delivered on the hoof to retail butchers who operated their own slaughter houses. Hogs and sheep were usually slaughtered on the farm. As larger urban centres emerged local packing plants came into being. These drew their supplies from farther afield but the method of marketing continued to be the most direct possible, namely, from producer to packer either by direct sale or through the medium of local buyers or drovers. Stockyards. - The development of an export trade in cattle, beginning about 1870, resulted in an expansion of the live stock industry and caused supplies to be drawn from still more remote areas. The first Stockyards were established to provide facilities for the assembling and handling of large numbers of live stock at the head of ocean navigation. Later central yards were established, often by the railway companies, on which a number of dealers operated. The first to be established was the Montreal Stockyards at Point St. Charles which commenced operations in 1885. The Toronto Stockyards were established in 1888. Book Marketing and Farm Supply Cooperatives

Download or read book Marketing and Farm Supply Cooperatives written by Paul C. Wilkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-19 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marketing and Farm Supply Cooperatives: Membership and Use, 1980 Viewed from three different perspectives, membership in and use of cooperatives was greatest in the Northern Plains, among dairy farmers, and among farmers with annual sales of $100 000 and over. Sixty-seven percent of farmers in the Northern Plans were members of a cooperative; 52 percent in the Lake States. For three major types of farms, 71 percent of dairy farmers were members of a cooperative, followed by 50 percent of cash grain farmers, and 31 percent of livestock producers. For all types of farmers, level of cooperative membership increased substantially with increasing farm size - from 2! Percent of farmers with annual sales of under to 69 percent of those with sales of and over. Only 22 percent of farmers held membership in and used marketing cooperatives, with the greatest concentration among those with sales of and over. Another 5 percent used but did not hold membership in a marketing cooperative. Much of this low level of cooperative marketing activity seems to be associated with either a diverse agriculture or large numbers of small farms in a trade area. Such situations may result in insufficient volume of a particular commodity to support a marketing cooperative. Book A Livestock Credit Cooperative for the Southeast Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Livestock Credit Cooperative for the Southeast Classic Reprint written by Ronald Lee Fox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Livestock Credit Cooperative for the Southeast Beef cattle population in the Southeast will expand more than 30 percent by 1985. Feeding calves to heavier weights before shipping them north and west as feeder cattle will increase. Feedlot operations will increase also. Total additional credit needs for cattle raising will be $175 million to $195 million in 1975 through 1980 and $485 million to $575 million by 1985. Existing sources of credit are not completely responsive to the needs of the livestock industry-neither in terms of volume nor in length of time and collateral. These sources of credit are oriented to the single-season, relatively low-volume needs of row-crop agriculture. Beef operations require high-volume, long-term credit to build up a cow herd. Beef producers' current heavy dependence on credit from individuals will not be sufficient to support the projected expansion. Rational growth of the Southeast livestock industry and its financial needs will require some supervision of loans and a close affiliation with a livestock marketing program. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Livestock Industry in Arkansas and Cooperative Marketing Opportunities Also, during the war years 1914 to 1918, along with tick eradication, the work of hog cholera control was given major consideration. Special government representatives, in addition to the State Agricultural Extension workers, assisted in programs to speed up production because of the additional food needed during the war period. While farmers were being urged to grow all the livestock their farms would maintain along with the needed production of other crops, danger from hog cholera kept hog raising under a severe handicap. Specialists from both State and Federal agencies trained county workers and individual farmers to vaccinate against cholera. Sanitation also was taught as essential in hog cholera control. Following World War I, the heavy production of both hogs and cattle demanded that measures be taken to help farmers get these animals on the market, and numerous cooperative shipping movements were organized. Book Livestock

  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Livestock written by Erin McKenna and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most livestock in America currently live in cramped and unhealthy confinement, have few stable social relationships with humans or others of their species, and finish their lives by being transported and killed under stressful conditions. In Livestock, Erin McKenna allows us to see this situation and presents alternatives. She interweaves stories from visits to farms, interviews with producers and activists, and other rich material about the current condition of livestock. In addition, she mixes her account with pragmatist and ecofeminist theorizing about animals, drawing in particular on John Dewey’s account of evolutionary history, and provides substantial historical background about individual species and about human-animal relations. This deeply informative text reveals that the animals we commonly see as livestock have rich evolutionary histories, species-specific behaviors, breed tendencies, and individual variation, just as those we respect in companion animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. To restore a similar level of respect for livestock, McKenna examines ways we can balance the needs of our livestock animals with the environmental and social impacts of raising them, and she investigates new possibilities for human ways of being in relationships with animals. This book thus offers us a picture of healthier, more respectful relationships with livestock.

Book Types and Market Classes of Live Stock Classic Reprint

Download or read book Types and Market Classes of Live Stock Classic Reprint written by H. W. Vaughan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types and Market Classes, of Live Stock During the past eight years there has been added to the curriculum in most of our agricultural colleges a new course dealing with the types of farm animals, market demands, and market classes of live stock. More properly speaking, it has been inserted at the very beginning of the work in animal husbandry, forming, as it logically does, the foundation course in the study of that important branch of agriculture. This is a soundly practical study; the student is brought to a much clearer conception of values and a much better appreciation of live stock than was possible under the former system of teaching. Recognizing the need of a text on this subject which could be placed in the hands of students, the writer prepared and printed a loose-leaf edition which has been used at Ohio State University during the past three years. This met with favorable comment, and requests have been made that the material be put into book form. After careful revision and the addition of a number of illustrations, this is now attempted in the hope that students and teachers and the general reader as well may find such a book useful. The arrangement of the subject-matter corresponds to the order usually followed in teaching, but may be varied as desired, each section of the book - Cattle, Sheep, Hogs, and Horses - being complete in itself. The writer desires to express his indebtedness to numerous commission men, buyers for the packing houses, and others who have kindly given their assistance during his quests for information, and to numerous experiment station publications, particularly the series of excellent bulletins issued by the Illinois Station setting forth the results of their study of the Chicago and St. Louis markets. Acknowledgment of valued assistance is due my present co-workers, and also Professors C. S. Plumb and F. R. Marshall at Ohio State University.
