This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Co-Operative and Other Organized Methods of Marketing California Horticultural Products This monograph is based on studies made during a residence of nearly two years in California. The chief sources of information have been: (1) personal interviews with officials of marketing organizations; (2) articles of incorporation, by-laws, agreements, crop contracts, and other printed documents; (3) detailed records of Boards of Directors and other official bodies; (4) files of periodicals published in fruit producing regions or giving prominence to horticultural products; and (5) special literature bearing on the subject (see Bibliography). An effort has been made to give a true picture of the co-operative movement in California as applied to the marketing of horticultural products. This study was completed in March, 1917, and describes conditions as they existed at that time. Since then various new organizations have been formed, transportation conditions and rates have changed on account of the war, and the government has greatly extended its participation in matters pertaining to food distribution. No attempt has been made to include a discussion of these later developments, though some of them are directly in line with the possibilities suggested near the close of this report. The writer desires to acknowledge his indebtedness to the late Professor A. V. Stubenrauch for suggesting the undertaking of this study and for encouragement during its progress almost to its completion; to other members of the faculty of the University of California for helpful suggestions; to the officers and managers of the various marketing organizations for their courteous assistance; especially to G. Harold Powell, General Manager of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, for the privilege of examining all the records in the office of that organization; to C. B. Messenger, Editor of the California Cultivator, for access to early files of the California Cultivator and the Rural Californian; and to Joseph F. Daniels, Librarian of the Riverside Public Library, for access to files of the Riverside Press and Horticulturist and the Riverside Daily Press. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperatives in California Agriculture Farmer-owned cooperatives have played important roles in the development of California's diverse agricultural economy throughout this century. Cooperatives are significant in most of the State's more than 250 crop and livestock commodities. In 1986, 227 cooperatives were Operating in California - 204 market ing and 23 supply cooperatives - with nearly memberships. (growers often hold membership in more than one cooperative.) In sever al subsectors, different cooperatives perform services at different levels in the marketing system. Further, many California farms produce more than one crop. Among the 204 marketing cooperatives, a number of services are provided. For example, 141 provide first-handler functions, 102 market domestically, and 36 are involved in export marketing. Fifty-seven per form transportation functions for members. Twenty cooperatives market byproducts. Thirteen cooperatives provide bargaining functions for mem bers. Two of five cooperatives operate in the fruit and nut crops sector with nearly memberships. No cooperatives, however, are active in the nursery, cattle, chicken, and turkey subsectors. Cooperatives' marketing shares vary by commodity. The share of almond hull marketing is estimated at 38 percent. About 47 percent of the almond production from 75 percent of the State's growers is handled by cooperatives performing processing and marketing functions. Book Cooperative Marketing

Download or read book Cooperative Marketing written by W. W. Cumberland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cooperative Marketing: Its Advantages as Exemplified in the California Fruit Growers Exchange The purpose of this book is to point the way toward a better system of food distribution. The history of the cooperative movement in the citrus industry of California demonstrates by achievement the possibility of improvement over the ordinary plan for getting farm products to market. In the cooperative organizations of the citrus industry marketing machinery has been developed to a degree not even approximated in other agricultural industries. Organization is, in fact, the characteristic feature of the citrus industry, while in other industries it is usually only an insignificant factor. Without, therefore, attempting to trace the history of the movement, the text analyzes the structure of the cooperative associations of the citrus industry. The ordinary problems that face the cooperative association are reviewed, problems of organization, problems of internal management, problems of relationship to other similar associations. It is hoped that an accurate picture has been drawn of the actual operation of the series of organizations that form the distributing system as a whole. It is also hoped that persons who contemplate organizing a cooperative marketing association can gain from the present analysis a satisfactorily comprehensive view of the difficulties likely to arise, and the manner in which a successful enterprise has met them. Citrus literature is voluminous, but on the marketing arrangements there are no connected accounts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
