Book excerpt: It is currently estimated that up to 70% of adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a co-occurring mental health condition, with anxiety and depression being the most common. While elevated risk has been well-documented, prevalence rates are likely underestimated as adolescents with ASD are rarely screened or assessed for mental health conditions. In addition to identification issues, factors influencing the co-occurrence of mental health conditions and ASD are not well understood. Limited research in this area suggests that sleep difficulties, behavior problems, and gastrointestinal symptoms are linked to anxiety and depression in adolescents with ASD. The current study was one of the first to use a multi-informant screening approach to examine co-occurring mental health conditions in adolescents with ASD. Specifically, parents, teachers, and adolescents with ASD completed screening measures to identify the proportion of adolescents with ASD with at-risk or clinical levels of anxiety and depression. Agreement between raters was analyzed to examine the utility of a multi-informant procedure. Additionally, co-occurring conditions, including sleep difficulties, behavior problems, and gastrointestinal issues, were examined as predictor variables to determine their associations with anxiety and depression in adolescents with ASD. Results indicated that across raters, 20-60% of adolescents with ASD experienced at-risk or clinical levels of anxiety and 3-41% experienced at-risk or clinical levels of depression. Interrater reliability was low to moderate between adolescents and parents, adolescents and teachers, and parents and teachers. Mothers and fathers demonstrated strong agreement across all measures of anxiety and depression. ASD symptom severity was found to be the strongest predictor of parent-reported anxiety among adolescents with ASD, while sleep difficulties, behavior problems, and ASD symptom severity accounted for unique variance in parent-reported depression in adolescents with ASD.
