Book The Relationship Among Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Learning Disability and Central Auditory Processing Disorder

Download or read book The Relationship Among Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Learning Disability and Central Auditory Processing Disorder written by Elana Lynn Miller and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confusion and controversy regarding the definitions of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disability (LD), and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD) have persisted despite their frequent use in classifying children in educational settings. Differential diagnosis of CAPD appears to represent a particular concern among a variety of professions, including audiology, speech-language pathology, psychology, and education. This study was conducted to determine if several assessment procedures addressing a child's academic, cognitive, and behavioural status would discriminate children identified with an attention deficit disorder, a learning disability, or a combination of these two disorders. We also attempted to determine if these children could be differentiated on the basis of their performance on measures of central auditory processing abilities. The test battery included the SCAN (a screening test for auditory processing disorders), the Auditory Continuous Performance Test (ACPT), the Children's Auditory Performance Processing Scale (CHAPPS), the Conners Parent Questionnaire, the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT-3; Reading and Arithmetic subtests), the Listening Comprehension subtest of the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test, and three subtests of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Third Edition. The results indicated that there is a significant, though not mutually inclusive relationship between ADHD and CAPD. Moreover, a proportion of children in all three groups (NA, LD, ADHD) demonstrated auditory processing difficulties. Although there were significant correlations among tests and groups, there was also much variability within each particular group. An interdisciplinary approach to the identification of auditory processing disorders in children with learning difficulties was emphasized.

Book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD Research Developments

Download or read book Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD Research Developments written by Michelle P. Larimer and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ADHD is characterised by learning and behavioural problems including short attention span, impulsivity, hyperactivity and impairments in perceptual, language and motor skills. Between 4-10 per cent of school-age children are believed to have it with boys outnumbering girls 2-3 to one. An adult form is also now recognised. The symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder are caused by a neurological dysfunction within the brain. The underlying physiological mechanism which causes Attention Deficit Disorder is still not thoroughly understood and remains under intense scientific study. It is presumed that brain chemistry is out of balance and that specific chemicals called neurotransmitters may be lacking in individuals with Attention Deficit Disorder. Leading-edge research from around the world is presented in this new volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder. Previously, it was considered a disorder that affected children only. Recently, however, there is no doubt that ADHD can affect adults as well, but with different clinical presentation. Thus, it is critical to understand how the clinical picture of the disorder changes with development. Traditional ADHD diagnostic procedures are broadening and incorporating new entities like endophenotypes. Comorbidity is a rule, especially if ADHD is not recognized and treated early. New genetic studies bring deeper and more concise knowledge about the disorder’s etiology. This book addresses these aspects of ADHD to bring about more clarity and understanding of the disorder.
