Book Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment

Download or read book Hormonally Active Agents in the Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-02-03 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some investigators have hypothesized that estrogens and other hormonally active agents found in the environment might be involved in breast cancer increases and sperm count declines in humans as well as deformities and reproductive problems seen in wildlife. This book looks in detail at the science behind the ominous prospect of "estrogen mimics" threatening health and well-being, from the level of ecosystems and populations to individual people and animals. The committee identifies research needs and offers specific recommendations to decision-makers. This authoritative volume: Critically evaluates the literature on hormonally active agents in the environment and identifies known and suspected toxicologic mechanisms and effects of fish, wildlife, and humans. Examines whether and how exposure to hormonally active agents occursâ€"in diet, in pharmaceuticals, from industrial releases into the environmentâ€"and why the debate centers on estrogens. Identifies significant uncertainties, limitations of knowledge, and weaknesses in the scientific literature. The book presents a wealth of information and investigates a wide range of examples across the spectrum of life that might be related to these agents.

Book Assessment of Climate Change over the Indian Region

Download or read book Assessment of Climate Change over the Indian Region written by R. Krishnan and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the impact of human-induced global climate change on the regional climate and monsoons of the Indian subcontinent, adjoining Indian Ocean and the Himalayas. It documents the regional climate change projections based on the climate models used in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and climate change modeling studies using the IITM Earth System Model (ESM) and CORDEX South Asia datasets. The IPCC assessment reports, published every 6–7 years, constitute important reference materials for major policy decisions on climate change, adaptation, and mitigation. While the IPCC assessment reports largely provide a global perspective on climate change, the focus on regional climate change aspects is considerably limited. The effects of climate change over the Indian subcontinent involve complex physical processes on different space and time scales, especially given that the mean climate of this region is generally shaped by the Indian monsoon and the unique high-elevation geographical features such as the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Tibetan Plateau and the adjoining Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal. This book also presents policy relevant information based on robust scientific analysis and assessments of the observed and projected future climate change over the Indian region.

Book 4th International Conference on Internet of Things and Connected Technologies ICIoTCT 2019

Download or read book 4th International Conference on Internet of Things and Connected Technologies ICIoTCT 2019 written by Neeta Nain and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Internet of Things and Connected Technologies (ICIoTCT), held on May 9–10, 2019, at Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, India. The Internet of Things (IoT) promises to usher in a revolutionary, fully interconnected “smart” world, with relationships between objects and their environment and objects and people becoming more tightly intertwined. The prospect of the Internet of Things as a ubiquitous array of devices bound to the Internet could fundamentally change how people think about what it means to be “online”. The ICIotCT 2019 conference provided a platform to discuss advances in Internet of Things (IoT) and connected technologies, such as various protocols and standards. It also offered participants the opportunity to interact with experts through keynote talks, paper presentations and discussions, and as such stimulated research. With the recent adoption of a variety of enabling wireless communication technologies, like RFID tags, BLE, ZigBee, embedded sensor and actuator nodes, and various protocols such as CoAP, MQTT and DNS, IoT has moved on from its infancy. Today smart sensors can collaborate directly with machines to automate decision-making or to control a task without human involvement. Further, smart technologies, including green electronics, green radios, fuzzy neural approaches, and intelligent signal processing techniques play an important role in the development of the wearable healthcare devices.
