Book The Clydesdale Motor Truck Company

Download or read book The Clydesdale Motor Truck Company written by Tiffany Willey Middleton and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clydesdale Motor Truck Company existed in Clyde, Ohio, from 1917 until 1939. As veterans of the early auto industry, Clydesdale engineers worked closely with the London General Omnibus Company to develop what they described as the "perfect" truck chassis. Shipped from Clyde, Ohio, Clydesdale trucks became internationally famous during World War I. The truck's patented "Driver Under the Hood" engine governor wowed drivers and industry leaders alike. Following the war, Clydesdale took center stage at national motor truck shows and motor truck tours, and later, pioneered diesel technology. The story of the Clydesdale company provides a window into early truck manufacturing and the international trucking landscape, just as the modern industry we recognize today was beginning to develop.

Book The Architectures of Childhood

Download or read book The Architectures of Childhood written by Roy Kozlovsky and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1935 and 1959, the architecture of childhood was at the centre of architectural discourse in a way that is unique in architectural history. Some of the seminal projects of the period, such as the Secondary Modern School at Hunstanton by Peter and Alison Smithson, Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation at Marseilles, or Aldo van Eyck’s playgrounds and orphanage, were designed for children; At CIAM, architects utilized photographs of children to present their visions for reconstruction. The unprecedented visibility of the child to architectural discourse during the period of reconstruction is the starting point for this interdisciplinary study of modern architecture under welfare state patronage. Focusing mainly on England, this book examines a series of innovative buildings and environments developed for children, such as the adventure playground, the Hertfordshire school, the reformed children hospital, Brutalist housing estates, and New Towns. It studies the methods employed by architects, child experts and policy makers to survey, assess and administer the physiological, emotional and developmental needs of the ’user’, the child. It identifies the new aesthetic and spatial order permeating the environments of childhood, based on endowing children with the agency and autonomy to create a self-regulating social order out of their own free will, while rendering their interiority and sociability observable and governable. By inserting the architectural object within a broader social and political context, The Architectures of Childhood situates post-war architecture within the welfare state’s project of governing the self, which most intensively targeted the citizen in the making, the children. Yet the emphasis on the utilization of architecture as an instrument of power does not reduce it into a mere document of social policy, as the author uncovers the surplus of meaning and richness of experience invested in these environments at the historical mom

Download or read book Raising the Dead written by Andy Dougan and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, Frankenstein, introduced readers around the world to the concept of raising the dead through scientific procedures. Those who read the book were thrilled by this incredible Gothic adventure. Few, however, realised that Shelley's story had a basis in fact. What she imagined as her modern Prometheus was a serious pursuit for some of the greatest minds of the early 19th century. It was a time when scientists genuinely believed, as Frankenstein did, that they could know what it feels like to be God. Raising the Dead is the story of the science of galvanism - named after the Italian scientist Luigi Galvini who had conducted the original experiments - a movement that investigated the theory of 'animal electricity', a unifying vital spirit that animates us all, its leaders believing that they stood on the brink of immortality. While they ultimately failed in this challenge, their studies mapped out the nervous system and made valuable and enduring contributions to modern-day medical knowledge and understanding - from theorising the concept of the modern-day defibrillator, and 'deep brain stimulus' which is used to treat personality disorders, to experimental procedures involving the use of microchip-controlled devices to bridge damaged spinal nerves.
