Book Clusters in Automotive and Information Communication Technology

Download or read book Clusters in Automotive and Information Communication Technology written by Paul J.J. Welfens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information & communication technology (ICT) and the automotive sector are two of the most important industries in the EU and the US. The EU’s eastern expansion and economic globalization have reinforced competition on the one hand; on the other hand the importance of outsourcing and off-shoring has increased. Against this background the intensification of innovation dynamics becomes crucial – and with them the role of regional innovation clusters. The analysis examines seven regions and six EU countries. The focus is on cluster and network dynamics in both industries, as regional ICT clusters are playing an increasingly central role in many European regions. Specialization and structural change in the automotive sector are highlighted, and new strategic approaches for multinational companies and changes in policy options are identified.

Book The Banking Functions of the Hungarian Urban Network in the Early 20th Century

Download or read book The Banking Functions of the Hungarian Urban Network in the Early 20th Century written by Zoltán Gál and published by Centre for Regional Studies. This book was released on 2006 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the impact of the Hungarian banking system on regional and urban development in the early 20th century, when local banks were important territorial elements of the financial space developing close links to regional economic structures. The basic concept of the study is that there is closer connection not only between the banking sector and the economy as a whole, but between the banking sector and urban development as well. This is coincided with the argument of the American Historical Geographical school (Conzen, 1977) says that the features of the urban network are in strong correlation with the spatial structure of banking system and the diffusion of financial innovations. We considered the spatial breakdown of capital flows are one of the most important indicators of the regional and urban transformation (Gál, 2005). The Hungarian banking system looks back to a history of more than 160 years. Examining the impact of the banking system on regional and urban development is reasonable in the second half of the 19th century, since in Hungary developed an extensive financial system with a well researchable statistical database (Vargha, 1913). The Hungarian banking system was well developed in comparison to international standards by the first decade of the 20th century (Kövér, 1991; Tomka, 1996). Moreover, it became one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the domestic economy of that time ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2014 Article IV Consultation highlights that Hungary’s economy has emerged from the 2012 recession and posted 1.1 percent growth in 2013, mainly driven by government investment and consumption, and also net exports. Private demand—although strengthening on the back of accommodative monetary conditions and improved market confidence—remained weak, and credit to the retail and corporate sectors continued to contract, albeit at a slowing pace. Hungary’s medium-term growth prospects remain subdued, as private consumption is still hampered by the ongoing repair of households’ balance sheets; the weak business environment continues to weigh on private investment.

Book Business Strategies for Economies in Transition

Download or read book Business Strategies for Economies in Transition written by Petr G. Chadraba and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of readings, Business Strategies for Economies in Transition, is a collection of papers describing various business issues as they occurred during the economic transitions in Central and Eastern European countries. The book’s sections are organized along the typical academic business disciplines – Marketing Management, Advertising, Finance and Banking and Human Resource Management. This organization allows professors from various disciplines to focus on articles within the area of their specific interest. The Maculan case is a multifaceted exercise. The scope is very broad, covering topics such as management, multi cultural environment, changing regulations, and corporate growth, to name a few. The accompanying Teaching Note gives some classroom guidance on how to approach this case. However, educators may find other issues in this case worth discussing with students. While the readings are from CEE countries, we feel that much of the material can and should be used when looking at other economies, be they in transition or in the process of economic development. There are many countries that are in one of these two stages. Many of the problems addressed in this book are relevant to developing economies. Any major change in the economic system, be that transition or development, impacts people. As such, the response of the population will directly influence the chance of a successful transformation.

Book Dependent Growth Foreign Investment and the Development of the Automotive Industry in East Central Europe

Download or read book Dependent Growth Foreign Investment and the Development of the Automotive Industry in East Central Europe written by Petr Pavlínek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a critical analysis of recent developments in the automotive industry of East-Central Europe (ECE). Economists, industry specialists and national governments have considered the rapid development of the automotive industry in ECE in the past twenty years an unqualified success. This rapid growth has been based on large inflows of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Western Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea, and it significantly contributed to GDP growth, created thousands of new jobs, and completely transformed the previously existing automotive industry in the region. This volume offers an analysis that goes beyond uncritical celebratory accounts of this rapid growth. It is based on original, detailed firm-level research conducted by the author in Czechia and Slovakia between 2009 and 2015 that covered assembly firms and the networks of component suppliers. Theoretically and conceptually, the analysis will draw on the global production networks and global value chains perspectives. Drawing on the original empirical data and on additional available information, this volume concentrates on several important questions related to the development of the automotive industry in ECE in the 2000s:• The role of FDI in the rapid development of the automotive industry after 1990 and particularly in the 2000s.• The upgrading of the automotive industry in East-Central Europe through FDI• The position of ECE in the automotive industry research and development (R&D)• The effects of the 2008-2009 economic crisis in the automotive industry of ECE.• The role of state in the rapid development of the automotive industry in ECE in the 1990s and 2000s.• The effects of FDI on domestic firms in the form of linkages between foreign-owned and domestic firms and spillovers from foreign-owned to domestic firms.

Book Innovation in Local Economies

Download or read book Innovation in Local Economies written by Colin Crouch and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of varieties of capitalism is moving on from the analysis of static national types to embrace local and sectoral diversity and the study of systems in the process of major change. This volume addresses the issue by examining four localised sectors, comparing a German case with one in another European country. The general changes taking place in Germany itself and the other countries (Hungary, Sweden, and the UK) form the context of the studies. The case studies concern:* Furniture making in North-Rhine Westphalia and southern Sweden,* Automotive manufacture in east Germany and northern Hungary,* Biotechnology around Munich and Cambridge,* TV programme and film-making in Cologne and central London. The studies find a complex pattern of conformity with, and deviation from, national types, but only occasional examples of where divergence takes the form of a direct confrontation with a national model. This is partly because national models are themselves changing; partly because they are often capable of accommodating more diversity than is often assumed by national studies; and partly because firms are increasingly able to reach outside their national boundaries for institutionalresources.
