Book Desire Performance and Classification Critical Perspectives on the Erotic

Download or read book Desire Performance and Classification Critical Perspectives on the Erotic written by Jessica R. Pfeffer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-04 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. In November 2011, artists, professors, students, and scholars from around the world gathered in Prague, Czech Republic, to attempt to define what could be considered the erotic. The conference sought submissions that addressed interactions of the erotic with history, art, literature, practices, performances, pedagogy, and sexuality, among many others. This wide focus brought together an intellectually rich meeting that interrogated the boundaries between eroticism, sex, and desire. This volume represents a sampling of papers presented at the conference, and the diverse focuses within these papers are indicative of the inter- and trans-disciplinary work that was presented. Each work within this collection brings a fresh and unique approach to the erotic and, in its own way, tries to answer the question, ‘What is erotic?’

Book Erotic Performance and Spectatorship

Download or read book Erotic Performance and Spectatorship written by Katy Pilcher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Erotic dance is one of the most contentious issues in feminist debates today and a source of fascination in media and popular cultural representations. Yet, why is it that we currently know so little about those who perform erotic dance for female customers, or the experiences of these spectators themselves? The result of a unique investigation within two of the UK’s leisure venues, Erotic Performance and Spectatorship seeks to rectify the aforementioned lack of insight. Through vivid ethnographies of a lesbian leisure venue and a male strip show, Pilcher’s research advances key debates about the gender and sexual politics of erotic dance, whilst simultaneously relating these to debates about the sex industry more widely. This book also subverts previous assumptions that only women perform erotic dance and only men spectate. Thus, this book stands out amongst other academic accounts, developing the debate beyond the established focus on erotic dance as either empowering or degrading. This new contribution to the study of erotic dance – which provides a fresh theoretical perspective combining queer and feminist theorising, in addition to rich empirical evidence – will appeal to academic researchers and both undergraduate and postgraduate students within the fields of sociology, gender studies, sexuality studies, gay & lesbian studies, feminism and other neighbouring disciplines. It will also be of interest to feminist and sex work activists, policy makers, and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tinderbox tells the exclusive, explosive, uninhibited true story of HBO and how it burst onto the American scene and screen to detonate a revolution and transform our relationship with television forever. The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, Sex and the City, The Wire, Succession...HBO has long been the home of epic shows, as well as the source for brilliant new movies, news-making documentaries, and controversial sports journalism. By thinking big, trashing tired formulas, and killing off cliches long past their primes, HBO shook off the shackles of convention and led the way to a bolder world of content, opening the door to all that was new, original, and worthy of our attention. In Tinderbox, award-winning journalist James Andrew Miller uncovers a bottomless trove of secrets and surprises, revealing new conflicts, insights, and analysis. As he did to great acclaim with SNL in Live from New York; with ESPN in Those Guys Have All the Fun; and with talent agency CAA in Powerhouse, Miller continues his record of extraordinary access to the most important voices, this time speaking with talents ranging from Abrams (J. J.) to Zendaya, as well as every single living president of HBO—and hundreds of other major players. Over the course of more than 750 interviews with key sources, Miller reveals how fraught HBO’s journey has been, capturing the drama and the comedy off-camera and inside boardrooms as HBO created and mobilized a daring new content universe, and, in doing so, reshaped storytelling and upended our entertainment lives forever.

Book The Erotic Cloth

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alice Kettle
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2018-02-08
  • ISBN : 1474281737
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book The Erotic Cloth written by Alice Kettle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through their metaphorical and material qualities, textiles can be seductive, exciting, intimate and, at times, shocking and disquieting. This book is the first critical examination of the erotically charged relationship between the surface of the skin and the touch of cloth, exploring the ways in which textiles can seduce, conceal and reveal through their interactions with the body. From the beautiful cloth which is quietly suggestive, to bold expressions of deviant sexuality, cloth is a message carrier for both desiring and being desired. The drape, fold, touch and feel, the sound and look of cloth in motion, allow for the exploration of identity as a sensual, gendered or political experience. The book features contributions on the sensory rustle and drape of silk taffeta and the secret pleasures of embroidery, on fetishistic punk street-style and homoerotic intimacy in men's shirts on screen, and a new perspective on the role of cloth and skin in the classic film Blade Runner. In doing so, it interrogates experiences of cloth within social, historical, psychological and cultural contexts. Divided into four sections on representation, design, otherness and performance, The Erotic Cloth showcases a variety of debates that are at the heart of contemporary textile research, drawing on the fields of art, design, film, performance, culture and politics. Playful, provocative and beautifully illustrated with over 50 color images, it will appeal to students and scholars of textiles, fashion, gender, art and anthropology.

Wrapped in red silk and hidden beneath a pile of old photos is a beautiful samurai sword in its scabbard. When the boy confronts his father with his discovery, he soon learns the tragic story behind its acquisition and its villainous former owner. His fathers tale of one mans ultimate devotion to the woman he loves and the sacrifices he was willing to make in her name begins to unfold, changing the boy forever. Nate Walker had lived a lonely existence, tormented for much of his young life by the nightmares of an abusive childhood and his bouts with his personal demons. But when Sarah Ross entered his life by chance and fell in love with him, his life suddenly took on a whole new meaning. A lifetime of happiness no longer seemed an unattainable dream. Little did Nate know, however, that a lone bullet fired on a warm summer night in Las Vegas would drastically alter his life and threaten to destroy his future with the woman he loves more than life itself. The shadows from her past would catch up to them in the worst way possible. After burying his older brother, Mark ODane, Sarahs ex-fianc and the youngest son of a casino magnate, launches a desperate ploy to win her back. Despite his associates dire warnings, ODane turns to his fathers sinister chief enforcer, Dante Medina, to deliver Sarah an invitation to his party in Las Vegas, an invitation he knows she would not dare refuse. When the sadistic killer arrives in town, she has no choice but to accept his summons in fear of a violent reprisal against Nate and his loved ones. After setting in motion a disastrous last-minute attempt to see Sarah before her departure, Nate and his friends, Mitch Green and Roy Tucker, launch a frantic plan of their own to find her and, at the same time, protect their loved ones at home from retaliation. Broken and afraid, Nate and Sarah find their way back to each other, but are burdened with the haunting knowledge that the true horror Dante threatened to unleash is only just beginning. Volume I comes to a tumultuous end, but the tale of the samurai sword is only halfway complete. The epic love story concludes in volume II.

Download or read book Sexuality Education written by Elizabeth Schroeder and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 1560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exemplary team of professionals provides a comprehensive look at sex education, the heated debate over federal controls, current research and practice, programs, politics, legislation, and cultural and religious issues related to sex and sexuality education. In the groundbreaking Sexuality Education: Past, Present, and Future, the history, practices, and politics of sexuality education are explained. Respected educators, counselors, and therapists marshal both research and educated opinion to offer insights into exactly what is meant by "sex education," what the various approaches are, what "age appropriate" lessons are supported by most professionals, and the impact of government policies. Noting that the need for sexuality education has expanded to adults, from new parents to senior citizens, this unique work also takes readers into classrooms and makes them privy to conversations representing everyone from elementary school students to nursing home residents. These comments reveal the range of unanswered questions about sex—questions that are important for psychological, as well as physical health. In addition, the contributors explore ongoing issues in sexuality education, such as how to present "culturally competent" lessons that include consideration of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. The experts also examine sexuality education in other countries, the challenges those countries face, and their victories over unplanned pregnancy and STDs in the global effort to preserve sexual health.
