Book The Biblical Covenant in Shakespeare

Download or read book The Biblical Covenant in Shakespeare written by Mary Jo Kietzman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theo-political idea of covenant—a sacred binding agreement—formalizes relationships and inaugurates politics in the Hebrew Bible, and it was the most significant revolutionary idea to come out of the Protestant Reformation. Central to sixteenth-century theology, covenant became the cornerstone of the seventeenth-century English Commonweath, evidenced by Parliament’s passage of the Protestation Oath in 1641 which was the “first national covenant against popery and arbitrary government,” followed by the Solemn League and Covenant in 1643. Although there are plenty of books on Shakespeare and religion and Shakespeare and the Bible, no recent critics have recognized how Shakespeare’s plays popularized and spread the covenant idea, making it available for the modern project. By seeding the plays with allusions to biblical covenant stories, Shakespeare not only lends ethical weight to secular lives but develops covenant as the core idea in a civil religion or a founding myth of the early-modern political community, writ small (family and friendship) and large (business and state). Playhouse relationships, especially those between actors and audiences, were also understood through the covenant model, which lent ethical shading to the convention of direct address. Revealing covenant as the biblical beating heart of Shakespeare’s drama, this book helps to explain how the plays provide a smooth transition into secular society based on the idea of social contract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because “It Is Finished” by Professor William P. Mashela Because “It Is Finished” You Can Still Be Successful posits that humankind was created for a specific role—to be successful in advancing the agenda of the Kingdom of Heaven—and was blessed in the Kingdom of God to be creative, innovative, and competitive. Despite numerous attempts by Satan to derail the Original Master Plan for the creation of humankind, with the restoration on the CROSS and the declaration “it is finished,” humankind can still be successful, if behavioral activities are aligned to the minimum standards of obedience. After creation, humankind was given a series of strategic tools for guidance: First was the Original Equation of Success, which was followed by the Unifying Equation of Success, and then the Restored Equation of Success, which serves as the central theme of this book. Jesus explained in parables the minimum standards of obedience that humankind should embrace in order to be successful, and in Because “It Is Finished” You Can Still Be Successful, Professor Mashela explores these biblical teachings and parables on how we can structure our behavior for genuine success.

Download or read book Albion s Seed written by David Hackett Fischer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-03-14 with total page 981 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating book is the first volume in a projected cultural history of the United States, from the earliest English settlements to our own time. It is a history of American folkways as they have changed through time, and it argues a thesis about the importance for the United States of having been British in its cultural origins. While most people in the United States today have no British ancestors, they have assimilated regional cultures which were created by British colonists, even while preserving ethnic identities at the same time. In this sense, nearly all Americans are "Albion's Seed," no matter what their ethnicity may be. The concluding section of this remarkable book explores the ways that regional cultures have continued to dominate national politics from 1789 to 1988, and still help to shape attitudes toward education, government, gender, and violence, on which differences between American regions are greater than between European nations.

Book The Compelling Community

Download or read book The Compelling Community written by Mark Dever and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The local church is meant to embody the vibrant diversity of the global church, transcending racial, cultural, and economic boundaries. Yet local churches too often simply reflect the same societal divisions prevalent in our world today—making them more akin to social clubs filled with like-minded people than the supernatural community the New Testament prescribes. Pastors Mark Dever and Jamie Dunlop argue that authentic fellowship is made up of two crucial ingredients: commitment (depth) and diversity (breadth). Theologically rooted yet extremely practical, this book sets forth basic principles that will help pastors guide their churches toward the compelling community that we all long for.
