Book Clothing Evaluative Criteria

Download or read book Clothing Evaluative Criteria written by Chun-Lan Yeh and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Engel, Blackwell, and Miniard (1993), evaluative criteria is defined as "the standards and specifications used by consumers to compare different products and brands" (p.51). Many studies have investigated factors that might influence the importance of clothing evaluative criteria used by consumers in the decision making process. However, few studies have been directed to examine the relationship between consumers' shopping motivations and their use of clothing evaluative criteria. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of consumers' shopping orientations on the importance placed on the clothing evaluative criteria. Hedonic and utilitarian shopper dichotomy was applied in this study. Self-administered questionnaires which included four sections of questions were used for data collection. The four sections, with 7-point Likert scales, asked about respondents' clothing evaluative criteria used in general and specific purchase context, shopping values, and demographic information. The data were collected at Oregon State University in summer 2005. A convenience sample of 452 students from nine departments was obtained. The frequency and descriptive statistics, cross tabulation and chi-square statistics, Principal Components Factor Analysis with Varimax Rotation, and Pearson Correlation were used to analyze the data. Respondents were classified into hedonic shoppers, utilitarian shoppers, or neutral shoppers, who were dropped in comparison analysis. Results indicated that hedonic shoppers were more likely to be female and younger than were the utilitarian shoppers. Hedonic shoppers were found to be more engaged in un-planned clothing purchases, go clothing shopping more frequently, and spend more money on clothing each month then utilitarian shoppers. Moreover, hedonic shoppers more often went clothing shopping in department stores, closed malls and specialty stores than did the utilitarian shoppers. Principal Components Factor Analysis was conducted to classified clothing evaluative criteria used in both general and specific purchase situations, and new variables were generated for Pearson Correlation Analysis. Results of Pearson Correlation analysis were used to test the hypotheses. Results showed that hedonic shopping value was positively and significantly related to "Aesthetics" and "Symbolic" dimensions of clothing, which supported the first hypothesis. However, utilitarian shopping value was not found to have positive and stronger relationship with "Performance" and "Economic" dimensions of clothing than hedonic shopping value, thus, the second hypothesis was not supported. Apparel manufacturers, retailers, and marketers can draw implications from the study result to develop more effective marketing communication mix. Also, consumer behavior researchers can further investigate hedonic shopping behavior based on the research findings.

Book Clothing Evaluative Critieria

Download or read book Clothing Evaluative Critieria written by Hsiu-Ju Hsu and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to Engel, Blackwell, and Miniard (1993), evaluative criteria refer to "the standards and specifications used by consumers to compare different products and brands" (p. 51). Many studies have examined the importance of clothing evaluative criteria used by consumers in their decision making. However, few studies have compared the clothing evaluative criteria used by consumers in different countries. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to compare the influence of culture on the importance placed on clothing evaluative criteria between Taiwanese and United States college women. Self-administered questionnaires were used for data collection. Seven-point scales were used to measure the importance of 12 clothing criteria: fabric, comfortable to wear, size/fit, quality, country of origin, color, pleasing to others, suitability, price, style, and coordination. The questionnaire also measured respondent's demographic characteristics. The questionnaire was first developed in English, translated into Chinese, and then back-translated into English. Questionnaires were handed out in classes at Oregon State University in the United States and at Fu-Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. A convenience sample of 233 female students received questionnaires (102 U.S. and 131 Taiwanese). Overall, 119 Taiwanese and 84 U.S. college women, who were qualified and completed the questionnaires, served as subjects. Data from the questionnaires were analyzed using t-tests. The findings indicated that the importance placed on clothing evaluative criteria was partially influenced by the nationality of the respondents. No significant differences were found between the two groups in the importance of style, coordination, color, fabric, price, pleasing to others, and brand name (p>.05). However, significant differences were found between the two groups in the importance of comfortable to wear, size/fit, quality, country of origin, and suitability (p

Book excerpt: The era of mass manufacturing of clothing and other textile products is coming to an end; what is emerging is a post-industrial production system that is able to achieve the goal of mass-customised, low volume production, where the conventional borders between product design, production and user are beginning to merge. To continue developing knowledge on how to design better products and services, we need to design better clothing manufacturing processes grounded in science, technology, and management to help the clothing industry to compete more effectively. Design of clothing manufacturing processes reviews key issues in the design of more rapid, integrated and flexible clothing manufacturing processes. The eight chapters of the book provide a detailed coverage of the design of clothing manufacturing processes using a systematic approach to planning, scheduling and control. The book starts with an overview of standardised clothing classification systems and terminologies for individual clothing types. Chapter 2 explores the development of standardised sizing systems. Chapter 3 reviews the key issues in the development of a garment collection. Chapters 4 to 7 discuss particular aspects of clothing production, ranging from planning and organization to monitoring and control. Finally, chapter 8 provides an overview of common quality requirements for clothing textile materials.Design of clothing manufacturing processes is intended for R&D managers, researchers, technologists and designers throughout the clothing industry, as well as academic researchers in the field of clothing design, engineering and other aspects of clothing production. - Considers in detail the design of sizing and classification systems - Discusses the planning required in all aspects of clothing production from design and pattern making to manufacture - Overviews the management of clothing production and material quality requirements

Book A Cross national Comparison of Parent consumers Evaluative Critieria Used in Purchasing Pre school Children s Apparel

Download or read book A Cross national Comparison of Parent consumers Evaluative Critieria Used in Purchasing Pre school Children s Apparel written by Pei-Chun Chen and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The children's apparel industry is a fast-growing industry in the United States. It is important to determine what factors are considered as the most important when parents purchase their pre-school children's clothing. To gain a better understanding of parent-consumers' purchasing behavior of pre-school children's apparel, this study focused on parent-consumers' evaluative criteria used in purchasing pre-school children's apparel both in Taiwan and in the U.S. The purpose of this study was to compare the evaluative criteria used by Taiwan and U.S. parent-consumers in their decisions to purchase children's apparel. The importance of intrinsic criteria directly related to the product itself and some selected extrinsic criteria were examined. The theoretical framework used for the present study was the EKB consumer behavior model; with focus on the alternative evaluation stage of the consumer decision making process. Previous research has examined evaluative criteria used in purchasing women's and men's apparel, but only limited research has investigated evaluative criteria used in purchasing children's apparel. Survey methodology was used to collect data. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to two non-probability, purposive samples to collect quantitative data. Data were collected through two selected pre-schools at Oregon State University in the U.S. and at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan. The samples consisted of 200 parent-consumers with a child or children, ages 3 to 6. Subjects were given questionnaires through teachers or researcher, resulting in a 84.1% response rate. Collected data were analyzed using two sample t-tests. Significant differences were found between the two groups in the importance of aesthetic and extrinsic criteria but not in the importance of usefulness and performance criteria. Among all 22 criteria, significant differences were found between Taiwan and U.S. respondents in the importance of: fiber content, type of fabric, fabric print, having character/logo, color fastness, price, on sale, brand name, and country of origin. The most important criteria for both groups were comfort and size/fit. By identifying the evaluative criteria used by parent-consumers of pre-school children's apparel in two countries, the results partially supported the EKB consumer behavior model. In addition, the findings about the importance of purchase criteria used by parent-consumers may also benefit children's apparel manufacturers and retailers in revising or improving their competitive ability in global marketing.

Book Prestige Seeking Consumer Behavior and Evaluative Criteria of Premium Brand Jeans

Download or read book Prestige Seeking Consumer Behavior and Evaluative Criteria of Premium Brand Jeans written by Meagon M. Bell and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although designer brand denim apparel has been popular since the early 1980's, the term "premium denim" is a relatively new concept to the apparel industry. This study investigated evaluative criteria used by female consumers when purchasing premium denim jeans. Previous studies have examined evaluative criteria and its importance in purchasing consumer items (Engel, Blackwell, &Miniard, 1993). This study expanded the past research of clothing evaluative criteria by linking it to prestige-seeking consumer behavior literature (Vigneron & Johnson, 1999). Questionnaires which used a multi-measurement approach were used for data collection. The multiple techniques included: likelihood Likert scale ratings, importance rankings, conjoint-couplet trade-off scenarios, and open-ended questions. The data were collected at Oregon State University in the Winter Term of 2008. A purposive convenience sample of 90 students from the Department of Design and Human Environment courses were surveyed. Frequency, percentage, cross-tabulation, and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Respondents were asked to assess nine evaluative criteria including those prestige-seeking behaviors by rating the likelihood of usage and ranking the top three criteria used in a previous purchase. The nine criteria were: fit, price, brand name, style, fabric, brand awareness, uniqueness, friend/peer opinion, and quality. They also decided between shopping scenarios that presented trade-offs between price and another criterion. Lastly, participants provided written descriptions of their last premium denim purchase. Results indicated that the criterion with the highest likelihood of usage in a premium denim purchase was fit, followed by quality and style. The rankings also revealed fit to be the most important characteristic when evaluating premium jeans. The trade-off shopping scenarios demonstrated that fit was largely preferred in a tradeoff with price and that a lower price was preferred over the quality of a pair of premium jeans. Finally, the open-ended questions revealed that although most premium denim consumers chose fit to be their most important criterion, they actually were more likely to use secondary characteristics of the term fit in order to explain what factors actually influenced their previous purchase. The four objectives were fully explained by the collected data to provide better insight and knowledge into what is important to premium denim consumers. The multi-measurement approach was helpful in accurately analyzing the evaluative criteria. It revealed that when an actual shopping simulation, or purchase situation is presented, it can cause a difference in opinion when compared to the likelihood of a future purchase. Premium denim manufacturers, retailers and buyers can draw implications from the study's results to develop future premium jeans in accordance with consumer's preferences. Furthermore, there is opportunity to further research the topic of premium denim as well as the opportunity to use this multi-measurement approach in other disciplines.
