Book The Generic Closet

    Book Details:
  • Author : Alfred L. Martin
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2021-04-06
  • ISBN : 0253054621
  • Pages : 223 pages

Download or read book The Generic Closet written by Alfred L. Martin and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even after a rise in gay and Black representation and production on TV in the 1990s, the sitcom became a "generic closet," restricting Black gay characters with narrative tropes. Drawing from 20 interviews with credited episode writers, key show-runners, and Black gay men, The Generic Closet situates Black-cast sitcoms as a unique genre that uses Black gay characters in service of the series' heterosexual main cast. Alfred L. Martin, Jr., argues that the Black community is considered to be antigay due to misrepresentation by shows that aired during the family viewing hour and that were written for the imagined, "traditional" Black family. Martin considers audience reception, industrial production practices, and authorship to unpack the claim that Black gay characters are written into Black-cast sitcoms such as Moesha, Good News, and Let's Stay Together in order to closet Black gayness. By exploring how systems of power produce ideologies about Black gayness, The Generic Closet deconstructs the concept of a monolithic Black audience and investigates whether this generic closet still exists.

Under the watchful and protective eye of author Samuel Valenza Jr.s father, the casino was a thriving den for craps, roulette, poker, and slots players. Growing up in this environment, the authors young life was scarred with violence, fear, hunger, betrayal, and homelessness, while his father enjoyed the high life with his powerful gangster associates. The author was just six years old when Frank Paulie Carbo, a prolific Murder, Inc. assassin, raided the casino and slaughtered his uncle, the casino handyman and goferas a warning. The murder was the beginning of the end at Red Mens Hall, which fell under intense scrutiny from the authorities. Using the narrative style of a crime novel, Valenza recalls the intimate and often dangerous days of a life lived in the shadow of the Mafia.

Book excerpt: "The Red Lady" by Katharine Newlin Burt is a supernatural thriller full of mysterious events and unexpected death. The story is written in a gothic first-person style. The narrative revolves around Janice Gale, a new housekeeper assigned to a country place near Pine Cone. The house was accused of being haunted by several ghosts. The majority of the house staff resigned after seeing ghosts many times. Janice decides to investigate this ghost thing and experience several strange happenings all over the manor house. Soon she concludes that the ghost is in search of some lost Russian jewels. Now the matters are more complicated as Janice falls into a trap set by one of the houseguests, who makes her believe she has a split personality disorder. But that's not true because the ghost looks just like Janice.... Excerpt: "I was the housekeeper at the time for little Mrs. Brane. How I had come to be her housekeeper might have served to forewarn me, if I had had the clue. None but an inexperienced, desperate girl would have taken the position after the fashion in which I was urged to take it. I remember the raw, colorless day, and how it made me shiver to face its bitter grayness as I came out of the dismal New York boardinghouse to begin my dreary, mortifying search for work. I remember the hollowness of purse and stomach; and the dullness of head. I even remember wondering that hair like mine, so conspiculously golden-red, could possibly keep its flame under such conditions. And halfway down the block, how very well I remember the decent-looking, black-clad woman who touched my arm, looked me hard in the face, and said, "A message for you, madam."

Download or read book Red Tarot written by Christopher Marmolejo and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2024-03-05 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed to be used with any deck, Red Tarot is a radical praxis and decolonized oracle that moves beyond self-help and divination to reclaim tarot for liberation, self-determination, and collective healing. For readers of Postcolonial Astrology and Tarot for Change Red Tarot speaks to anyone othered for their identity or ways of being or thinking—LGBTQIA2S+ and BIPOC folks in particular—presenting the tarot as a radical epistemology that shifts the authority of knowing into the hands of the people themselves. Author Christopher Marmolejo frames literacy as key to liberation, and explores an understanding of tarot as critical literacy. They show how the cards can be read to subvert the dynamics of white supremacist-capitalist-imperialist-patriarchy, weaving historical context and spiritual practice into a comprehensive overview of tarot. Situating tarot imagery within cosmologies outside the Hellenistic frame—Death as interpreted through the lens of Hindu goddess Chhinnamasta, the High Priestess through Aztec goddess Coyolxauhqui—Marmolejo’s Red Tarot is a profound act of native reclamation and liberation. Each card’s interpretation is further bolstered by the teachings of Toni Morrison, bell hooks, Paulo Freire, José Esteban Muñoz, and others, in an offering that integrates intersectional wisdom with the author’s divination practice—and reveals tarot as an essential language for liberation.
