Book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow

Download or read book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow written by David William Meyers and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mean in-line force and the time dependent transverse force acting on a circular cylinder undergoing periodic transverse oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation at several steady flow velocities. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as a closed channel at the test section. The mean in-line force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient C sub di and plotted as a function of A/D and D/VT. The time dependent transverse force has been expressed in terms of the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients C sub di and C sub ml and plotted as functions of the relative amplitude A/D and the period parameter VT/D. The results have shown that the mean in-line force is significantly larger than that corresponding to steady flow about a non-oscillating cylinder and that energy may be transferred to the oscillating cylinder from the fluid at or near the vortex-shedding frequencies for the A/D values tested. Book Analysis and Optimization of Unsteady Flow Past a Circular Cylinder Using a Harmonic Balance Method

Download or read book Analysis and Optimization of Unsteady Flow Past a Circular Cylinder Using a Harmonic Balance Method written by Emily Buckman Clark and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional laminar flow over a circular cylinder was investigated in this work. Three cases were considered in which the cylinder was either stationary, in constant rotation, or in periodic rotation. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effects of a rotating cylinder for lift enhancement, drag reduction, and the suppression of vortex shedding. The governing coupled nonlinear Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a finite difference discretization and Newton's method. In this way, three flow solvers were developed for this research: a steady solver, an unsteady time-accurate solver, and an unsteady harmonic balance solver. The force coefficients were of prime interest in this study. Favorable results were obtained using rotation as an active control for the flow over the cylinder. The cylinder in constant rotation resulted in lift enhancement, drag reduction and vortex suppression for increasing rotational speeds. Lift enhancement and drag reduction were also noted for a rotationally oscillating cylinder. The trade-offs for these goals were discussed. Lastly, a finite difference sensitivity analysis was performed for a rotationally oscillating cylinder with the harmonic balance solver. The mean drag coefficient was taken as the objective function, and the Strouhal number was the investigated design variable. The goal was to use the sensitivity analysis to determine a forcing frequency, which minimized the mean drag coefficient. Two iterative techniques were investigated, but neither converged to a minimum drag coefficient with the harmonic balance solver. It was determined that a minimum drag coefficient occurs near the boundary between the lock-on and non lock-on regions or in the non lock-on region, where the harmonic balance solver does not converge.

Book Flow Control Around Circular Cylinder

Download or read book Flow Control Around Circular Cylinder written by Abdulaziz Mohammed AlRefaie and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents experimental and numerical investigations of flows around a circular cylinder with different ventilation hole shapes and ventilation holes arrangement. Ten models with different ventilation configurations are tested at ReD 55000, and data were acquired for each case at flow angles ranging from 0° to 180° at increment of 2.5°. It has been found that the best results in terms of drag force reduction are models where the holes are located on the sides (shoulders). With the best hole-configuration, the mean drag coefficient is reduced by 33.5% compared to the smooth surface case. Numerical investigations were conducted using FLUENT on a smooth cylinder and the cylinder with the experimentally-determined best hole-configuration. The CFD results show that the flow through the holes fixes the local separation locations on the cylinder, thereby reduce the flow induced force oscillation. The Strouhal number associated with vortex shedding is reduced from the smooth cylinder.

Book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow Part 1 Revised

Download or read book Transverse Oscillations of a Circular Cylinder in Uniform Flow Part 1 Revised written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the forced oscillations of a circular cylinder in uniform flow. The transverse force has been decomposed into two components and the appropriate force coefficients have been determined experimentally through the use of a Fourier-averaging technique. The results were then incorporated into the equation of motion to predict the dynamic response of elastically-mounted cylinders. The numerical predictions were found to be in good agreement with those obtained experimentally. The results of the discrete-vortex model of the separated flow field about an oscillating cylinder will be described in a separate report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a unified approach to acoustics and vibration suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses on vibration and fluids. The book includes thorough treatment of vibration of harmonic oscillators, coupled oscillators, isotropic elasticity, and waves in solids including the use of resonance techniques for determination of elastic moduli. Drawing on 35 years of experience teaching introductory graduate acoustics at the Naval Postgraduate School and Penn State, the author presents a hydrodynamic approach to the acoustics of sound in fluids that provides a uniform methodology for analysis of lumped-element systems and wave propagation that can incorporate attenuation mechanisms and complex media. This view provides a consistent and reliable approach that can be extended with confidence to more complex fluids and future applications. Understanding Acoustics opens with a mathematical introduction that includes graphing and statistical uncertainty, followed by five chapters on vibration and elastic waves that provide important results and highlight modern applications while introducing analytical techniques that are revisited in the study of waves in fluids covered in Part II. A unified approach to waves in fluids (i.e., liquids and gases) is based on a mastery of the hydrodynamic equations. Part III demonstrates extensions of this view to nonlinear acoustics. Engaging and practical, this book is a must-read for graduate students in acoustics and vibration as well as active researchers interested in a novel approach to the material.
