Download or read book Dangerous Liaisons written by Norman C. Ellstrand and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2005-04-13 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of genetic engineering, "designer" crops might interbreed with natural populations. Could such romances lead to the evolution of "superweeds", as some have suggested? But haven't crops had sex with wild plants in the past? Has such gene swapping occurred without consequences? And if consequences have indeed occurred, what lessons can be gleaned for engineered crops? In Dangerous Liaisons? Norman Ellstrand examines these and other questions. He begins with basic information about the natural hybridization process. He then describes what we now know about hybridization between the world's most important crops—such as wheat, rice, maize, and soybeans—and their wild relatives. Such hybridization, Ellstrand explains, is not rare, and has occasionally had a substantial impact. In some cases, the result was problematic weeds. In others, crop genes have diluted natural diversity to the point that wild populations of certain rare species were absorbed into the gene pool of the more common crop, essentially bringing the wild species to the brink of extinction. Ellstrand concludes with a look to the future. Will engineered crops pose a greater threat than traditional crops? If so, can gene flow and hybridization be managed to control the escape of engineered genes? This book will appeal to academics, policy makers, students, and all with an interest in environmental issues.

A man who seems to be more than human… Zaron is on Earth to facilitate the Krinar invasion—and to forget the terrible tragedy that ripped apart his life. Book excerpt: As the world is shaken by a virus, Shobhaa De – a writer who understands the human heart and how it beats – felt the need to document not just what she is going through personally but what the entire world is experiencing. And out of this need emerged many unique narratives ... Lockdown Liaisons is a collection of short stories, from the varying perspectives of both men and women – young and old, brave and cowardly, cheerful and weighed down – each story an unique offering from a writer who understands how very fragile human relationships can be as they break, suffer and are redefined under trying circumstances. Explore, read and understand the subterranean world of shifting emotions during Covid-19, through stories that will speak to you. There is a woman with a young child who discovers that she doesn’t love her husband after all, there is a migrant worker who has to make a tough choice as he gets ready to walk hundreds of uncertain kilometres homewards. And many more. But what binds these stories together is love. These are stories that show how Covid-19 is affecting the hearts of hundreds of people as they struggle to make sense of altered circumstances, of the ‘new normal’ that will emerge in a post-Covid world.

Book Dangerous Liaisons

Download or read book Dangerous Liaisons written by Cinzia Arruzza and published by Resistance Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the relationship between the workers' movement and the women's movement, this book investigates the questions "Why does gender inequality exist?" and "How does it relate to capitalism? "Historical examples range from the mid-19th century to the 1970s and include events, debates, and key personalities from China, Russia, the United States, France, Italy, Spain, and Britain. It shows time and again the controversial, often difficult relationship between feminism and Marxism. The theoretical questions discussed include the origins of women's oppression, domestic labor, dual systems theory, performativity, and differentialism. Women's oppression is a structural element of the division of labor and one of the direct factors through which capitalism not only reinforces its ideological domination but also organizes the exploitation and reproduction of labor. The integration of patriarchal relations and capitalism has led to their radical transformation--in the family, in terms of women's place in production, in sexual relations, and with respect to sexual identity. Marxism needs to probe complex processes: ongoing transformations and crises, a global context creating an increasingly feminized workforce, and changing relations between men and women. The book maintains that it is a mistake to submerge gender into class or to believe that freedom from exploitation automatically brings about women's liberation and the ending of sexual roles; it is equally wrong is to think the class question can be removed and gender made the main enemy.

Book Dangerous Liaisons

Book excerpt: For the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont seduction is a game - the former lovers relish manipulating others to bring amusement to their jaded existences. While Valmont is determined to succeed in his conquest of a virtuous married woman, Merteuil challenges him to seduce an innocent convent girl who it to be married to her former lover. As their intrigues become increasingly duplicitous and they find their human pawns responding in ways they could not have predicted, the consequences prove to be more serious, and deadly, than the two conspirators could have guessed. Depicting decadence and moral corruption in pre-revolutionary France, Dangerous Liaisons (1782) is one of the most scandalous and controversial novels in European literature.

Book excerpt: Demo: http://youtu.be/YfUNCwJT_Wo Regular version of the book: https://www.createspace.com/4021797 Effect: A best-selling sci-fi romance novel paperback is presented for a book test. Performer states that, in order to get a completely random image, a book might come in handy.Ordinarily, people tend to think of a finite list of things. For example, a house. The performer highlights the ordinary nature of the book. He (optionally) even asks if anyone wants to use their own book (if so, he will do a Hoy book test with the book provided). With a spectator chosen and the book provided, the spectator is asked to first examine the book.Once they are happy with the book, the spectator is asked to think of any page in the book mentally, without saying it out loud. The performer mentions that even if he memorized the whole book, without knowing a page number, that memorization would be useless. The spectator is instructed to open the book to the page he is thinking of and read the first complete sentence. He is warned that the book might have some erotic content and, if that sentence is embarrassing, he is to choose another. When the sentence is chosen, he is asked to re-read it silently. He is to focus on the sentence, and, if possible, on a word that is easy to picture. The book is put away. The performer draws his impression. Afterwards, he asks what image is in the person's mind. The spectator is asked to draw it in the air, or to just say the sentence or the easy-to-picture word (depends on the presentation). It turns out that the performer's impression is spot on. The book can be now given away as a souvenir (the performer switches it for the much less expensive 'real' book since he can get it for this purpose in bulk at decent prices). Bare-bones presentation: Book is introduced. Its existence on Amazon and other stores is highlighted. Person thinks of a page, turns to it with the performer facing away. The person is then told to read the first full sentence on that page to himself/herself. Person focuses on the sentence and then on a word that is easy to picture in the sentence. Performer faces away all the time, draws a heart, and then reveals the heart to the person and the audience. Method: You use a book that is gimicked in a way. It is a version of a real novel, but one where sentences were written in on the beginning of each page (first full sentence) to contain the word heart. These sentences fit the story perfectly. In fact, they were edited by Anna Zaires, the author of the actual novel. Thus, the book can be examined very closely before the effect. After the effect, however, I strongly recommend putting the book out of sight and/or switching it for the original un-gimicked version. I usually give away a copy of an un-gimicked book at every performance. My switch is super-simple: as part of the presentation, I have the book put into a bag. Then, when I do the giveaway, I give away the real, u-ngimicked version. I have also used switch bags and other method for switching. During a formal show, no one ever asks to examine the book after the effect, but during close-up, they sometimes do - and I use one of the methods mentioned. Subtleties: This book has sexual content (think fifty shades of gray), so I often say "if the page you open to happens to have something embarrassing on it, just choose another". This emphasizes the freedom of choice of page, and how regular the book is (why would you ever put sex scenes into a 'trick book'?). When drawing the heart I first often draw something that looks like heart-rate monitor output. It helps disguise what I am drawing plus it can be part of the revelation because very many sentences in the book deal with heart beating faster in some way. I put a period after Volume I on page 1 of the gimmicked book for easy way to check which of the 2 I am holding.
