Download or read book Herpesvirus DNA written by Yechiel Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1981-09-30 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herpesviruses, classified in the family Herpesviridae, are important human and animal pathogens that can cause primary, latent or recurrent infections and even cancer. The major interest in research on herpesviruses today focuses on understanding the organization of the DNA genome, as well as on characterizing the viral genes in regard to their control and function. Modern techniques have allowed the viral DNA to become a molecular tool in the study of gene function, since it is now possible to implant the DNA into eukaryotic cells. This book contains original studies on the structure and organization of the DNA of human and animal herpes viruses. The various chapters acquaint the reader with the organization of the viral DNA, the mRNA transcripts, the replicative intermediates of the viral DNA, defective DNA genomes and their mode of synthesis, analyses of the viral DNA sequences in transformed cells, and the relationship between the presence of viral DNA fragments in the cancer cells and the transformed state of the cells.

Download or read book The Rogue Clone written by James Wells and published by Wheatmark, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good ideas are not always what they seem, especially when the natural order of things is altered for the sake of reputation. Photojournalist Jim Smith discovers this first-hand when he stumbles across a rare skunk ape and takes a picture of the beast. The public's reaction to Smith's story and picture, however, are not what he expects. Instead of catapulting his career, the image makes Smith a laughing stock and threatens to destroy his reputation as a credible photojournalist. In an effort to exonerate himself, Smith searches in vain for another sighting of the skunk ape. However, the only evidence he finds is a tuft of the creature's fur caught in some branches. When he learns of Dr. Janice Gruber, a genetics engineer specializing in cloning animals, it only seems logical to prove that the skunk ape is real by having her clone the beast with the DNA found in his fur sample. Using a female orangutan as a surrogate, the doctor's cloning efforts are successful and seem to be under control until the pregnant orangutan is set free by an animal rights group. The orangutan delivers her cloned infant in the woods and soon dies, leaving the young skunk ape alone to roam the wilds with only his animal instincts to guide him. Three years later he is looking for a mate and savagely rapes a young woman named Emily Wilson. Not long after that he beats a hunter to death. Emily, whose life is forever changed because of the attack, joins forces with Jim Smith and Deputy Billy Eagle to find the beast and stop him before he attacks again. But will their efforts be too little too late?

Book Somatic Hypermutation in V Regions

Download or read book Somatic Hypermutation in V Regions written by E. J. Steele and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-01-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides critical reviews regarding the process of somatic hypermutation in antibody V genes. Topics covered include the in vivo kinetics of antigen-driven somatic hypermutation in a number of well-studied systems in mice; the instability of lg genes in cultured cells; the key role played in vivo by germinal centers in providing the appropriate "mutational" microenvironment; the types of nucleotide sequence errors generated; the process of hypermutation in pre-arranged V regions expressed in transgenic mice; and a critical evaluation of the status of molecular models proposed to explain hypermutation. Other topics include a detailed review of data from hypervariable retroviral systems, as well as precise studies on the mutagenic potential of various DNA polymerases in vitro. The book will provide indispensable information for immunologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, biochemists, and cell biologists.

Book Modulation of MHC Antigen Expression and Disease

Download or read book Modulation of MHC Antigen Expression and Disease written by G. Eric Blair and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995-11-09 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes are involved in the immune system's response to tumor and infected cells and in generating an immune response. This book brings together basic aspects of the regulation of MHC antigens with important clinical applications (in viral infection, viral oncology, cancer biology and autoimmunity). There is a strong emphasis on situations where MHC expression is modulated (either stimulated or repressed). The book's major themes are: the mechanisms of MHC expression--explored at several levels including the transcription and translation of MHC genes and the insertion of MHC protein molecules into plasma membranes; the effect of cytokines on MHC expression--both in the etiology of certain diseases and in possible immunotherapeutic approaches to disease; and the use of gene therapy to modify MHC expression in cancer cells, and thereby cause tumor rejection. This book will be valuable to researchers and clinicians in molecular biology, immunology, oncology, and virology.
