Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author Jeffrey Archer comes Only Time Will Tell, the first in the ambitious Clifton Chronicles series that tells the story of one family across generations, across oceans, from heartbreak to triumph. The epic tale of Harry Clifton's life begins in 1920, with the words "I was told that my father was killed in the war." A dock worker in Bristol, Harry never knew his father, but he learns about life on the docks from his uncle, who expects Harry to join him at the shipyard once he's left school. But then an unexpected gift wins him a scholarship to an exclusive boys' school, and his life will never be the same again. As he enters into adulthood, Harry finally learns how his father really died, but the awful truth only leads him to question, was he even his father? Is he the son of Arthur Clifton, a stevedore who spent his whole life on the docks, or the firstborn son of a scion of West Country society, whose family owns a shipping line? This introductory novel in Archer's engrossing series The Clifton Chronicles includes a cast of colorful characters and takes us from the ravages of the Great War to the outbreak of the Second World War, when Harry must decide whether to take up a place at Oxford or join the navy and go to war with Hitler's Germany. From the docks of working-class England to the bustling streets of 1940 New York City, Only Time Will Tell takes readers on a journey through to future volumes, which will bring to life one hundred years of recent history to reveal a family story that neither the reader nor Harry Clifton himself could ever have imagined.

  • Author : Mari Riess Jones
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 0190618213

Download or read book Time Will Tell written by Mari Riess Jones and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2018 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attention is a central concept in psychology. The term 'attention' itself has persisted, even though it implies a static, insulated capacity that we use when it is necessary to focus upon some relevant or stimulating event. Riess Jones presents a different way of thinking about attention; one that describes it as a continuous activity that is based on energy fluctuating in time. A majority of attention research fails to examine influence of event time structure (i.e., a speech utterance) on listeners' moment-to-moment attending. General research ignores listeners endowed with innate, as well as acquired, temporal biases. Here, attending is portrayed as a dynamic interaction of an individual within his or her surroundings. Importantly, this interaction involves synchronicity between an attender and external events. This emphasis on time and synchronicity distinguishes the author's theory, called Dynamic Attending Theory (DAT), from other approaches to attending which characterize attention metaphorically as a filter, resource pool, spotlight, and so on. Recent research from neuroscience has lent support to Riess Jones' theory, and the goal of this book is to bring this new research as well as her own to the wide audience of psychologists interested in attention more broadly.

Book Armed Conflict and International Law In Search of the Human Face

Download or read book Armed Conflict and International Law In Search of the Human Face written by Mariëlle Matthee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written in memory of Avril McDonald, who passed away in April 2010. Avril was an inspired and passionate scholar in the fields of international humanitarian law, international criminal law, human rights law and law in the field of arms control and disarmament. What in particular made Avril’s work special, was her strong commitment with the human aspects throughout. Fourteen scholars and practitioners have contributed to this liber amicorum, which has led to a rich variety of topics within the disciplines of Avril’s expertise. They all have in common that they deal with the human perspectives of the discipline of law at hand. They concentrate on the impact of the developments in international law on humans, whether they are civilians, victims of war or soldiers. This human perspective of law makes this book an appropriate tribute to Avril McDonald and at the same time a unique and valuable contribution to international legal research in the present society. A society that becomes more and more characterized by detailed legal systems, defined by institutions that may frequently lack sufficient contact with the people concerned.

Book They Didn t Listen They Didn t Know How

Download or read book They Didn t Listen They Didn t Know How written by Olwen Davies and published by Author House. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 807 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They say don't judge a book by its cover, but it's human nature to instinctively do it. On this cover, I've placed a framed picture of my husband as he was in life, with the words "They didn't listen, they didn't know how," indicating from where he is right now, he can see a bigger picture. I say "framed" because there is evidence indicating he was a diabetic, but in fact, he was suffering from something else. The back cover has a selection of photographs of him enjoying life against a background of honeycomb with the inscription "Life became too sweet for me." I invite you to read on with an open mind!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although much has been revealed in two other books, it is now apparently time for me to share some of the things kept hidden for the last two years. They are about the pope, the Vatican and the battle the world too is to face. The words and visions given to me are written as I see or receive them in my head. The visions are described using my words and with knowledge given to me at the time of seeing them. Those visions are then replaced and words are given to me from Heaven. All of this shared with you will be in italics with the date I received it. The three dots will indicate where some has been omitted. It will be easy to see where my words change to theirs. The rest of the book will describe how I went through what someone told me she thought was akin to the Dark Night of the Soul. I also fought head to head battles with Satan himself. Not the demons so many speak of, this was Satan and he left me in no doubt it was.
