Book Visions of Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Visions of Heaven and Hell written by John Bunyan and published by Sovereign Grace Publishers,. This book was released on 2007-02 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the wicked have traveled a course of sin, and discover they have reason to fear the God;s judgement and wrath for their sins, they begin to wish there is no God to punish them, then by degrees they persuade themselves there is no God, and then they set themselves to study the arguments to support their opinion. This excellent book by John Bunyan covers the subject matter of the existence of heaven and hell as well as studies and dispells the arguments presented by sinners who argue there is no heaven and hell. Most do not know that Bunyan wrote some 60 books, and poetry too. And also almost a well-kept secret is that his doctrine was so biblically laced that many good men would call him too severe. He believed in, and taught, ALL the doctrines of grace, including double-predestination, or reprobation. Why then is he not smeared with the name of hyper-Calvinist like Goodwin, Gill, and others? I guess the same people ought to call Luther a hyper-Lutheran, for he believed and taught it, too. Why begin a review of Bunyan's writings with such a view of his doctrine? It is to show that a Pilgrim's Progress can come only from someone who believes and teaches ALL the counsel of God, without flinching, yea, with loving-kindness. Illegally, He sat in a jail cell over a river for 12 years with his Bible, Galatians by Luther, and another book or two. He had the choice of feeling miserable and murmuring, or of filling his time, thoughts, and energies with studying that Bible, and seeking a way to be of help to his more comfortable, but less dedicated, brothers and sisters. Listen, dear saints, you can't do any better than reading Bunyan. Like Gurnall, he covers everything here and there, and with a sweetness that can come only from God. What a shame that his large heart should be encased in such small print. But, like digging gold, it is worth the time and trouble to dig spiritual gold. Bunyan (1628-1688) rose from an humble beginning to being a preacher to a little house church, to 12 years in jail because he would not agree to quit preaching, to a huge church in London. He wrote 66 books, nearly all while in jail.

Book Clive Bell and the Making of Modernism

Download or read book Clive Bell and the Making of Modernism written by Mark Hussey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Amusing, charming, stimulating, urbane' - THE TIMES 'Revelatory' - GUARDIAN 'Restores Clive Bell vividly to life' - Lucasta Miller ______________ Clive Bell is perhaps better known today for being a Bloomsbury socialite and the husband of artist Vanessa Bell, sister to Virginia Woolf. Yet Bell was a highly important figure in his own right: an internationally renowned art critic who defended daring new forms of expression at a time when Britain was closed off to all things foreign. His groundbreaking book Art brazenly subverted the narratives of art history and cemented his status as the great interpreter of modern art. Bell was also an ardent pacifist and a touchstone for the Wildean values of individual freedoms, and his is a story that leads us into an extraordinary world of intertwined lives, loves and sexualities. For decades, Bell has been an obscure figure, refracted through the wealth of writing on Bloomsbury, but here Mark Hussey brings him to the fore, drawing on personal letters, archives and Bell's own extensive writing. Complete with a cast of famous characters, including Lytton Strachey, T. S. Eliot, Katherine Mansfield, Pablo Picasso and Jean Cocteau, Clive Bell and the Making of Modernism is a fascinating portrait of a man who became one of the pioneering voices in art of his era. Reclaiming Bell's stature among the makers of modernism, Hussey has given us a biography to muse and marvel over – a snapshot of a time and of a man who revelled in and encouraged the shock of the new. 'A book of real substance written with style and panache, copious fresh information and many insights' - Julian Bell

Book The Essential Clive Barker

Download or read book The Essential Clive Barker written by Clive Barker and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I wonder if the reverse is not also in some way true. That the artist is constantly working on an elaborate and fantasticated self-portrait, but at the end has drawn, unbeknownst, a picture of the world." -- Clive Barker, "Private Legends: An Introduction" Clive Barker, award-winning and New York Times bestselling author, playwright, artist, producer, director, screenwriter, and one of the world's master storytellers, writing in the haunting and moving traditions of Poe and Dickens, invites us to join him on a dazzling, wondrous journey through the worlds of his imagination and to experience visions, dreams, love, terror, heaven and hell, and revenge. As we read, we discover and explore the dream-sea Quiddity and the islands of Ephemeris; the five Dominions of the Imajica, of which the Earth is but an imperfect facet; the rapturous world woven into an ancient, threadbare carpet in a derelict house in Liverpool; Hood's Holiday House where each day contains four seasons and children's wishes may come true; the Sky Room of Galilee, where the creation of the universe may be witnessed; and the clubs and bars of San Francisco and New York, in which all manner of sexual adventures lie in wait. In these stories, the real and the miraculous are within a breath of one another, life gives way to death, and death to life; doorways open into other states of existence, and each doorway leads us back to our own dreams and fears. The Essential Clive Barker is an irresistible narrative compendium that superbly represents the impressive quality and range of Barker's fiction, spanning more than twenty years of writing. It contains more than seventy excerpts from novels and plays and four full-length short stories, all personally selected by Barker, and offers a privileged insight into a remarkable writer and his art.

Book The Arts and Crafts Country House

Download or read book The Arts and Crafts Country House written by Clive Aslet and published by Aurum Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: he Arts and Crafts Country House is a fascinating and beautifully illustrated survey of some of Britain's most important houses. The Arts and Crafts Movement produced some of our country's greatest works of design, architecture and decorative art. It grew out of a reaction against the Industrial Revolution in the late 1850s, inspired by an alternative vision of life based on the revival of traditional building crafts and the use of local materials. Country Life magazine, founded in 1897, championed the movement in the weekly articles it devoted to country houses, illustrated with specially commissioned photographs. In his stunning book, Clive Aslet draws upon this unique archive to provide a detailed survey of 25 major country houses, designed by the movement's foremost architects, including Lutyens, Webb, Williams-Ellis and Blow. He also shows how the Arts and Crafts tradition continues to influence architects today. The 22nd title in this acclaimed series, The Arts and Crafts Country House reveals the enduring legacy of an architectural ideal.

Book excerpt: - Each of the 12 houses will be featured in national and international press to announce the book- In the UK, the media includes Tatler, House & Garden, Country Life, The English Home, and Telegraph Luxury Online- In the US, the media includes Town & Country, Architectural Digest Online, The AD Aesthete Podcast, Air Mail, and DeparturesThis book is a sumptuously produced journey around 12 privately-owned country houses, asking what it is like to live in such places today. What role do they play in the 21st century? For many years after the Second World War, the country house was struggling. Now a new generation of young owners, often with children, has taken over. They're finding innovative ways to live in these ancient, fragile and poetic places. While they treasure the history and beauty of the houses, they're also adapting and enhancing them for a modern era. Old Homes, New Life is a behind-the-scenes account of today's aristocracy, as they reinvent the country house way of life. Each family does this in its own way, maintaining the tradition of individualism, even eccentricity, which is so much associated with country houses. Dylan Thomas's superb yet intimate photographs capture both the inhabitants of these houses and the spaces they occupy - from State dining to family kitchen, walled garden to attic. This feast for the eyes is accompanied by an equally mouth-watering text by Clive Aslet, based on interviews with family members and his long experience of the subject through his years as editor of Country Life. The result is an exclusive tour of a dozen spectacular homes.

Book Photorealism At the Millennium

Download or read book Photorealism At the Millennium written by Louis K. Meisel and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 2002-10-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the early 1970s, Meisel began documenting the works of the original thirteen Photorealists. Many of these are still making significant contributions, as evidenced, for example, by Richard Estes's complex street scenes and waterscapes, Tom Blackwell's dazzling reflective storefronts, and John Salt's wistful rusting automobiles, all represented here. Although always approached from a Photorealist point of view, the images depicted by these artists are staggeringly varied - Ralph Goings's diners, Richard McLean's horses, Linda Bacon's toys, Randy Dudley's industrial vistas, Ron Kleemann's Thanksgiving Day parade balloons, David Parrish's pop icons. Wherever possible, the complete works made by the artist in the 1990s are illustrated, and the rest are listed. Such a comprehensive approach makes this volume invaluable to scholars, collectors, and art historians.".
