His ancestor was Mayflower passenger James Chilton. The Bundy connection comes when John Bundy married James Chilton's grandaughter, Martha Clandler, in 1646.

Their seven children were all born in Idaho. The earliest probable Showalter ancestor was John, Sr. (1694-1773) of Germany, who was a Mennonite and came to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1750. The earliest known Bundy ancestor, John (ca. 1616-1681), was born in Nottinghamshire, England. He came to Massachusetts in 1635 as an indentured servant.
