Book A Clinician s Guide to Asthma

Download or read book A Clinician s Guide to Asthma written by Jordan Long and published by American Medical Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asthma is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the airways of the lungs. In asthma, airway hyper-responsiveness leads to recurring episodes of breathlessness, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing. There is no precise way to diagnose asthma. It is usually suspected on review of symptoms, whether these occur or worsen with exercise, or on exposure to allergens, viral infections or air pollution. Spirometry can be used to support a diagnosis. By avoiding exposure to air pollution, tobacco smoke, perfume and other chemical irritants, and respiratory infections, asthmatic episodes can be managed. Medications for asthma include fast-acting or long-acting. They are generally prescribed depending on the frequency of the symptoms and the severity of the illness. Bronchodilators, mast cell stabilizer, inhalatory corticosteroids and leukotriene antagonists are recommended for the management of asthma. Different approaches, evaluations, methodologies and advanced studies on asthma have been included in this book. It brings forth some of the unexplored aspects of this condition. Students, researchers, experts and all associated with pulmonology will benefit alike from this book.

In the last 10 years, substantial progress has been made in terms of understanding some of the mechanisms that drive severe asthma; there have also been concomitant advances in the recognition of specific molecular phenotypes. This ERS Monograph covers all aspects of severe asthma – epidemiology, diagnosis, mechanisms, treatment and management – but has a particular focus on recent understanding of mechanistic heterogeneity based on an analytic approach using various ‘omics platforms applied to clinically well-defined asthma cohorts. How these advances have led to improved management targets is also emphasised. This book brings together the clinical and scientific expertise of those from around the world who are collaborating to solve the problem of severe asthma.

Book Difficult To Treat Asthma

Download or read book Difficult To Treat Asthma written by Sandhya Khurana and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-08-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical, stepwise, evidence-based approach to effective management of patients with difficult to treat asthma. The impact of asthma on morbidity and healthcare utilization increases exponentially with severity. Severe refractory asthma accounts for less than 5% of all asthma. Its prevalence, however, is often overestimated as there are several other confounding factors that make asthma ‘difficult to treat’. Many novel (albeit expensive) therapies are now available and providers caring for patients with severe asthma are charged with selecting the best evidence treatment. This calls for complex and nuanced decision-making. Whether people with asthma gain and maintain control over their condition depends not only on the availability of effective drugs, but also multiple patient and healthcare provider behaviors. Therefore, now more than ever, it has become increasingly important to differentiate “difficult” from “severe refractory” asthma to allow identification of patients most likely to benefit from these therapies. This volume delves into the current understanding of mechanisms and increasingly recognized heterogeneity of this complex disease. It discusses a structured approach to identification and optimization of factors contributing to poor asthma control, including nonadherence, comorbidities and occupational/environmental triggers. The book includes ‘state of the art’ reviews on recent advances in traditional and targeted asthma therapies, as well as a glimpse into what the future may hold. Highlights include a comprehensive guide to management of severe asthma in children and pregnancy, as well as practical considerations to management of asthma based on different clinical phenotypes. Each chapter is authored by leading experts in the field who share their own clinical approach. This is an ideal guide for clinical pulmonologists and allergist/immunologists, as well as primary care providers, physician extenders in specialty practice, physicians in pulmonary/allergy training, and even industry partners.

Download or read book Asthma written by J Graham Douglas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the series title implies each Clinician’s Desk Reference is a practical resource and a daily aid for physicians in the hospital setting and in primary care. Asthma is one of the most important chronic disorders in the developed world. Evidence from around the world shows the prevalence of asthma has increased considerably since 1975, and now affects around 7.2% of the world population (about 100 million individuals). In the UK asthma is now the most common chronic disease affecting all age groups with approximately 11% of the population being diagnosed as having asthma at some time in their lives. Understanding of the basic mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of asthma has improved dramatically over the past 20 years. Along with this increase in basic scientific knowledge, randomized clinical trials have produced evidence to guide clinicians in how to manage patients with asthma. The book covers epidemiology, diagnosis and management, and takes a look at future developments. The authors highlight the under diagnosis of occupational asthma and emphasize the importance of effective patient education, particularly asthma action plans. There are ten clinical cases dealing with common diagnostic and management problems, frequently asked questions and appendices containing resources for patients and clinicians including useful websites, information leaflets and major references.
