Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on the Acute Abdomen So far as possible the cases related have been treated aseptic ally, and without unnecessary multiplication of instruments, for if the practitioner gets the idea that he cannot Operate without someone's Special bobbin, clamp, or suture needle, he may postpone operation, and the patient in all probability lose his life. Prompt operation must follow on diagnosis, and there is usually no time for the removal of the patient to a surgical home if more than an hour or two will be lost by doing so. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Acute Abdominal Diseases: Including Abdominal Injuries and the Complications of External Hernia During our periods of office as Resident Assistant Surgeon and Resident Assistant Physician respectively to St. Thomas's Hospital, we had an unique opportunity of seeing, and in many cases of treating, a very large number of acute abdominal conditions. In this book we have endeavoured to set forth the results of our experiences, and our object has been to discuss, compare and contrast all the various acute diseases and injuries to which the abdomen and its contents are liable, treating these conditions from the point of view of both physician and surgeon. We are not acquainted with any single book written on these lines, though the surgical aspect of the subject has been effectively dealt with by Mr. Battle in his admirable Lectures on the Acute Abdomen, recently published in book form. We would here acknowledge the valuable help which we have obtained from the numerous text-books and monographs which we have consulted during the preparation of this book. Book The Acute Abdomen Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Acute Abdomen Classic Reprint written by William Henry Battle and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Acute Abdomen The first edition of Lectures on "The Acute Abdomen" having become exhausted some months ago, I was requested by the publishers to write a second edition, with such alterations and additions as might seem advisable. The continued advance of our knowledge of the acute conditions which may arise in the abdomen has necessitated an increase in size of the volume, whilst it has appeared desirable to add the accounts of many cases and illustrations with the view of more thoroughly elucidating the subject. So many acute abdominal diseases have proved curable by operation, when it is performed early, that I hope my readers will not consider the subject unduly magnified considering its importance in modern practice. The treatment of the acute abdomen (including that of lesions the result of traumatism) demands an acquaintance with the surgical part of the subject which cannot always be obtained in text-books on surgery. In addition, it may be added that in order to be of general application the methods described should be as simple as possible, so that no practitioner need fear to make an attempt to save a threatened life because he has not some particular clamp, bobbin or brand of catgut in his possession. Silk is still recommended, because it is strong and can be trusted. Moreover, it is easily sterilised by boiling, even in a cottage. The principal additions to the present volume, which is divided into sections, are those on the planning of abdominal incisions and injuries to the abdomen, external and internal, including most of the subject-matter of the Oration given before the Medical Society of London in 1910. There is a special section on the after effects of abdominal injuries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Lectures on Abdominal Surgery and Other Subjects The volume comprises lectures on Abdominal Surgery, con taining the results of the author's vast experience in this depart ment; a paper on The Treatment of Gun-shot Wounds of the Small Intestines, based upon a series of experiments on dogs; it also contains short clinical lectures upon almost every subject in Surgery. In order to illustrate the amount of work which had to be per formed during one session, the stenographic report of one entire clinic has been added as an appendix. Most of the cases considered were referred to the clinic by alumni of the college. Their initials and addresses have been preserved for the purpose of identification. Book excerpt: For many years, there has been a great deal of work done on chronic congestive heart failure while acute heart failure has been considered a difficult to handle and hopeless syndrome. However, in recent years acute heart failure has become a growing area of study and this is the first book to cover extensively the diagnosis and management of this complex condition. The book reflects the considerable amounts of new data reported and many new concepts which have been proposed in the last 3-4 years looking at the epidemiology, diagnostic and treatment of acute heart failure.
