Sample Book Insights: #1 I met with Carl, a psychiatrist, to discuss his family. He explained that his wife had called him about an appointment with him. She had been referred by John Simons, a child psychiatrist in town who worked mostly with adolescents. #2 The family was very tense during the session, and it seemed like they were about to fight. But Carl was able to defuse the situation by asking them to wait until Don arrived. #3 The family was having a difficult time deciding whether or not they would have an official meeting. I insisted that it would be unfair to Don and I thought unfair to Mrs. Brice to have him absent when we were discussing the prospect of the family changing. #4 It was clear to us that we needed the whole family to help deal with the anxiety of the situation. But the parents insisted that we were being professionally irresponsible by delaying the appointment.

Book Family Therapy in Clinical Practice

Download or read book Family Therapy in Clinical Practice written by Murray Bowen and published by Jason Aronson. This book was released on 1985 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Bowen was a student and practitioner of classical psychoanalysis at the Menninger Clinic, he became engrossed in understanding the process of schizophrenia and its relationship to mother-child symbiosis. Between the years 1950 and 1959, at Menninger and later at the National Institute of Mental Health (as first chief of family studies), he worked clinically with over 500 schizophrenic families. This extensive experience was a time of fruition for his thinking as he began to conceptualize human behavior as emerging from within the context of a family system. Later, at Georgetown University Medical School, Bowen worked to extend the application of his ideas to the neurotic family system. Initially he saw his work as an amplification and modification of Freudian theory, but later viewed it as an evolutionary step toward understanding human beings as functioning within their primary networkDtheir family. One of the most renowned theorist and therapist in the field of family work, this book encompasses the breadth and depth of Bowen's contributions. It presents the evolution of Bowen's Family Theory from his earliest essays on schizophrenic families and their treatment, through the development of his concepts of triangulation, intergenerational conflict and societal regression, and culminating in his brilliant exploration of the differentiation of one's self in one's family of origin.

Book A Different Kind of Therapy An Analysis of the Symbolic experiential Therapy of Carl Whitaker M D as Interpreted Through the Lens of a Systems Thinker

Download or read book A Different Kind of Therapy An Analysis of the Symbolic experiential Therapy of Carl Whitaker M D as Interpreted Through the Lens of a Systems Thinker written by Shuranda Thephani Nirvana Dhanesar and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the symbolic-experiential therapy of Carl Whitaker in relation to traditional systems theory. The symbolic-experiential perspective emerged from the humanistic branch of psychology in the 1960s. It differed from the classical models of systemic theories in that the quality of experience was both the measure of psychological well-being as well as the focus of interventions in therapy. Many in the field who adhered to the traditional systems framework did not believe that this perspective qualified as a purely systemic approach because of its emphasis on emotion and feelings. The author's intent was to examine the similarities and differences between the symbolic-experiential approach and the traditional systemic approach to therapy to determine if there was really a significant difference between the two perspectives. The author hopes that this document will motivate others in the field of marriage and family therapy to do the same by re-examining previous work once considered "non-systemic," to determine if they would be classified as systemic today. Chapter 1 includes an introduction to the life of Carl A. Whitaker, as well as a description of how his career as a family therapist began. Chapter 2 is a comprehensive literature review that (1) chronologically illustrates the history of the development of the symbolic-experiential approach, (2) describes the evolution of Whitaker's thoughts and (3) outlines his contributions to the field of marriage and family therapy. Chapter 3 contains a representative example of the symbolic-experiential approach to therapy. In this chapter, the author transcribed an interview conducted by Whitaker with one family called "A Different Kind of Caring." The interview contained two parts, (1) Whitaker's conversations with the family in the therapy sessions and (2) Whitaker's conversations with William Bumberry where he explains what he did with the family in the therapy sessions. In chapter 3 the author focused solely on Whitaker's conversations with the family to describe what he did from her systemic perspective. In chapter 4, the author focused solely on Whitaker's conversations with Bumberry to describe what he said he did, also from her systemic perspective. Chapter 5 describes the thoughts of those who knew Whitaker well, professionally and personally. The implications of the study for the field of marriage and family therapy as well as areas of future research are also described.

Book Clinical Manual of Couples and Family Therapy

Download or read book Clinical Manual of Couples and Family Therapy written by Gabor I. Keitner and published by American Psychiatric Pub. This book was released on 2009-12-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Clinical Manual of Couples and Family Therapy presents a conceptual framework for engaging families of psychiatric patients. It outlines practical, evidence-based family therapy skills that make it easier for clinicians to effectively integrate families into the treatment process. Moreover, it reestablishes the role of the psychiatrist as the leader of the team of professionals providing mental health care to patients in need. The underlying assumption in this concise manual is that most psychiatric symptoms or conditions evolve in a social context, and families can be useful in identifying the history, precipitants, and likely future obstacles to the management of presenting problems. The book clarifies the clinical decision-making process for establishing family involvement in patient care in different clinical settings, and it outlines distinct steps in family assessment and treatment within a biopsychosocial organizing framework that can be applied to all families, regardless of the patient's presenting problems. The book's approach is based on a broad model of family functioning, which provides a multidimensional description of families and has validated instruments to assess family functioning from both internal and external perspectives. Unique features and benefits of the manual include: A focus on one consistent model of assessment and treatment that can be applied to a wide range of psychiatric conditions and clinical settings Numerous case examples, tables, and charts throughout the text to further highlight the material A summary of key concepts at the end of each chapter A companion DVD, keyed to discussion in the text, that demonstrates how to perform a family assessment and treatment All psychiatrists should be proficient in assessing the social and familial context in which a patient's psychiatric illness evolves. The Clinical Manual of Couples and Family Therapy is a practical guide designed to facilitate a clinician's ability to evaluate and treat couples and families.
