Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect balance of theory and practice! Here’s the practical introduction you need to understand the essential theoretical principles of clinical immunology and the serological and molecular techniques commonly used in the laboratory. You’ll begin with an introduction to the immune system; then explore basic immunologic procedures; examine immune disorders; and study the serological and molecular diagnosis of infectious disease. An easy-to-read, student-friendly approach emphasizes the direct application of theory to clinical laboratory practice. Each chapter is a complete learning module with learning outcomes, chapter outlines, theoretical principles, illustrations, and definitions of relevant terminology. Review questions and case studies help you assess your mastery of the material. A glossary at the end of the book puts must-know information at your fingertips. An access code inside new printed texts unlocks Lab Exercises and Branching Case Studies online at FADavis.com that offer more opportunities to apply theory to clinical laboratory practice.

Book Advances in the Control of Theileriosis

Download or read book Advances in the Control of Theileriosis written by A.D. Irvin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1981-09-30 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately five years have elapsed since the Conference on "Tick-borne Diseases and their Vectors" (Wilde, 1978, University of Edinburgh) was held at the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine in Edinburgh. Theileriosis was one of the main topics at that Conference and some 20 scientific presentations were given. Also in the same year a Workshop on "Theileriosis" was held at the Kenyatta Conference Centre in Nairobi (Henson & Campbell, 1977, IDRC, Ottawa). Both of these meetings provided a valuable up dating of theilerial diseases, and the Proceedings have been a constant source of reference for scientists in the ensuing years. The meetings played a significant role in setting the scene for a number of important advances which have been made since then. In February of this year, attention was focused on these advances when nearly 200 scientists from over 30 countries were assembled at the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases in Nairobi for the international conference on "Advances in the Control of Theileriosis". The interest and concern shown in this subject has now grown to the extent that more than 70 scientific presentations were given over the course of a very busy week. An important facet of the Conference was the attention given to the control of Theileriosis, since this must be the ultimate aim of all those involved with the disease. Control will be difficult.

Book excerpt: The variety of chemically diverse pharmacological agents administered to patients is large and continues to expand and with every new drug released, there is always potential for adverse reactions, some of them allergic. With its roots in immunology and pharmacology, the science of drug allergy is becoming better understood and applied as its importance is increasingly recognized throughout the many branches of medicine. Drug Allergy: Clinical Aspects, Diagnosis, Mechanisms, Structure-Activity Relationships sheds new light on this field. Comprehensive in design, this authoritative title identifies the most important culprit drugs implicated in immediate and delayed drug hypersensitivities and offers up-to-date information on classifications, diagnoses, underlying mechanisms and structure-activity relationships. Chapters dealing with the molecular and cellular mechanisms of drug hypersensitivities, non-immune-mediated sensitivities and diagnostic methods are presented as introductory material for in-depth treatises on the β-lactam antibiotics, other antibiotics and antimicrobials, drugs used in anesthesia and surgery, opioid analgesics, corticosteroids, monoclonal antibodies and other biologics, drugs used in chemotherapy, proton pump inhibitors, iodinated and gadolinium-based contrast media and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. In addition to being of immense value to clinicians, other health care professionals and researchers, this title will prove invaluable for those taking undergraduate and graduate courses in science and will also serve as a useful text for students of medicine, pharmacy, nursing and dentistry.

Book Clinical Aspects of The Plasma Proteins

Download or read book Clinical Aspects of The Plasma Proteins written by Tadashi Kawai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the year of 1969 when this monograph was originally published in Japanese by Professor TADASHI KAWAI, titled as "The Plasma Proteins, Their Fundamental and Clinical Aspects." After I read through the Japanese edition, I was impressed by its rather complete coverage of the subjects and their detailed descriptions. I have felt that this excellent monograph should be distributed not only among our Japanese scien tists but also among many other colleagues throughout the world. I am happy, the refore, to know that the English edition of his monograph, partly revised, is ready to be published at this time. Professor KAWAI received his postgraduate medical training in U.S.A. for seven years, and was certified by the American Board of Pathology in both Anatomical and Clinical Pathology in Fall, 1962. Thus, I believe, he is the most suitable fellow for publishing the English edition of this kind.

Book The Biological Basis of Schizophrenia

Download or read book The Biological Basis of Schizophrenia written by G. Hemmings and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years lip service has been paid to a belief in a biological basis for schizophrenia, but ,nevertheless psychosocial and psychodynamic "theories" of schizophrenia have been promulgated, and these have detracted from the all important biological work, Eclecticism has ruled the day and has caused considerable confusion, As a result research in schizophrenia has not progressed as fast as it should have done and treatment has been less effective than it could otherwise have been. This book is devoted to a wholly biological approach to the problem of schizophrenia, in the hope that many more workers will enter this exciting field of research. A wide variety of topics is covered, including brain structure; the genetics, pathogenesis and treatment of schizophrenia; a consideration of dietary and immunological factors and finally a chapter on alcoholism as it seems possible that the problems of schizophrenia and addiction are linked. We are grateful to all our contributors and to MTP Press for their enthusiasm for this book. Gwynneth P Hemmings William A Hemmings XI SECTION 1: Structure 1 The brain stem reticular formation K. E. WEBSTER There can be no question that the brain stem reticular lormation no longer exercises the same fascination for neurologists that it did a quarter of a century ago.
