Book excerpt: Climb into My Mind is a book jam-packed with poems, essays, and short stories. The topics addressed are those that pertain to school life, political and social issues, family and love. Meandering through the maze that is my mind I present a different perspective on how I, as a teenager, look at the way situations unfold and how they affect me. This is not quite a typical book, yet it is easy to relate to as you find comfort in knowing that you are not alone in the world. The section, What I See in the Mirror, is an introspection of my deepest feelings. Undoubtedly, we all experience bad and depressing times in our lives. We often feel as if no one understands what we are going through, but I hope the poem themes in this section will create a connection with you. While some of the poems tackle both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, the stories introduce you to new characters, which bring an imaginative and lively angle to the world around us with a bit of a twist. A few of the stories and poems are funny, whereas others are more serious as they deal with political events and social awareness bringing different perspectives to controversial topics such as gay marriage and teen pregnancy. My hope is that this book comforts, intrigues, captivates, and amuses you. So what are you waiting for, grab a ladder and climb into my mind. My Voice I feel the tattoos on my back sting, but I know that one more scar wouldnt change the memory it has left behind. With no reason to live, I feel ready to take that final step. I rise from my spot and give my fingers a break. I glance down at the tobacco leaves I have picked, knowing I am not allowed to stop. But why should I care? I have no voice, I serve no purpose. I am just a slave. I stand still looking in his eyes full of hate. He whips out his weapon as I begin to walk away from my work area. I never turn my head as he yells for me to turn back. I keep marching at a steady pace until I see beyond the fields a man of my kind with a voice -- a voice that is strong, that is making others listen; a voice that has power, and speaks only for change. This makes me turn around and sit back down, knowing my voice wont take long to be heard.

Book The Impossible Climb

Download or read book The Impossible Climb written by Mark Synnott and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INSTANT NATIONAL BESTSELLER NEW YORK TIMES MONTHLY BESTSELLER One of the 10 Best Books of March, Paste Magazine A deeply reported insider perspective of Alex Honnold’s historic achievement and the culture and history of climbing. “One of the most compelling accounts of a climb and the climbing ethos that I've ever read.”—Sebastian Junger In Mark Synnott’s unique window on the ethos of climbing, his friend Alex Honnold’s astonishing free solo ascent of El Capitan’s 3,000 feet of sheer granite is the central act. When Honnold topped out at 9:28 A.M. on June 3, 2017, having spent fewer than four hours on his historic ascent, the world gave a collective gasp. The New York Times described it as “one of the great athletic feats of any kind, ever.” Synnott’s personal history of his own obsession with climbing since he was a teenager—through professional climbing triumphs and defeats, and the dilemmas they render—makes this a deeply reported, enchanting revelation about living life to the fullest. What are we doing if not an impossible climb? Synnott delves into a raggedy culture that emerged decades earlier during Yosemite’s Golden Age, when pioneering climbers like Royal Robbins and Warren Harding invented the sport that Honnold would turn on its ear. Painting an authentic, wry portrait of climbing history and profiling Yosemite heroes and the harlequin tribes of climbers known as the Stonemasters and the Stone Monkeys, Synnott weaves in his own experiences with poignant insight and wit: tensions burst on the mile-high northwest face of Pakistan’s Great Trango Tower; fellow climber Jimmy Chin miraculously persuades an official in the Borneo jungle to allow Honnold’s first foreign expedition, led by Synnott, to continue; armed bandits accost the same trio at the foot of a tower in the Chad desert . . . The Impossible Climb is an emotional drama driven by people exploring the limits of human potential and seeking a perfect, choreographed dance with nature. Honnold dared far beyond the ordinary, beyond any climber in history. But this story of sublime heights is really about all of us. Who doesn’t need to face down fear and make the most of the time we have?

Book American Climber

Download or read book American Climber written by Luke Mehall and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-28 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Climber is a memoir loaded with epic climbing stories and adventures. It contains two underlying themes: a compelling narrative of Mehall's tumultuous journey to climbing that ultimately saved his life, and a detailed look at the American dirtbag climbing culture, which has never truly been examined in a memoir. "I started climbing during a time when people traveled and lived to climb. They scraped together anything they could and lived out of cars, trucks, tents or vans. Climbing was not only a lifestyle for them, but a purpose for life. With the popularity of climbing skyrocketing, a lot of this soul has been diluted or lost. Luke does an incredible job at capturing the essence of why so many of us climb, why so many of us devote our lives to this sport and lifestyle. It's these people that are the lifers, that keep the soul and character alive, and now there is a great memoir documenting one person's journey through it." Beth Rodden, climbing legend, prolific El Capitan first ascentionist "Luke Mehall emerged as a writer just in time to chronicle the dwindling light of the soul-climber: one who climbs for the aesthetics, who adventures for the freedom not the recognition, who's hi-tech gear is merely a tool rather than a totem. Luke and his cohorts embody the dream of the American West with all its promise of freedom and risk and reward. To dive into a Mehall book is to be brought along on a ride that we all wish we had the courage to board, but most of us trade that courage for comfort." Chris Kalous, host of the Enormocast podcast Luke Mehall is one of the few adventure writers out who handle the tricky first person voice as if it were made for him. John Long, climbing legend and Senior Contributing Editor, Rock and Ice Who's more in tune with the ethos of the dirtbag-and more able to write passionately and honestly about it-than Luke Mehall? I think no one. Brendan Leonard of Semi-rad.com, and author of 60 Meters to Nowhere and New American Road Trip Mixtape "American Climber isn't just about climbing; it is a strong and well-told story about climbing out of the gray cave of existential depression that infects so many young people today, an always-honest account of finding meaning in his life not through disposable McJobs or the standard-issue American dream, but through self-medicating on nature and nature's challenges, where the true highs of life and living are hard-earned doing strange things in strange places with a band of brothers and sisters equally disaffected but spirited. I've previously said that Mehall could be the Kerouac of his generation; with American Climber, he's there." George Sibley author of Dragons in Paradise and Water Wranglers, longtime contributor to the Mountain Gazette

Book excerpt: A deeply moving story of the beauty and brutality of life, and death, on the world’s most unpredictable and perilous mountain. Sitting just lower than Everest at 8,611 meeres above sea level on the China–Pakistan border, the Savage Mountain claims the lives of even the most experienced climbers. Alongside severe altitude, the weather is notoriously volatile and the climb relentlessly steep. A staggering one in four attempts result in death on the mountain. In One Man’s Climb, Adrian Hayes details an intensely personal account of his attempts to climb K2 – first in 2013 and again in 2014. Absorbing and self-reflective, his journey is as much a story of climbing a mountain as it is a testament to the human spirit’s ability to endure.

Book Journey Into the Mind s Eye

Download or read book Journey Into the Mind s Eye written by Lesley Blanch and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning tale set in England, Paris, and Moscow, chronicling Blanch's love for an older Russian man and the passionate obsession that takes her to Siberia and beyond. “My book is not altogether autobiography, nor altogether travel or history either. You will just have to invent a new category,” Lesley Blanch wrote about Journey into the Mind’s Eye, a book that remains as singularly adventurous and intoxicating now as when it first came out in 1968. Russia seized Lesley Blanch when she was still a child. A mysterious traveler—swathed in Siberian furs, bearing Fabergé eggs and icons as gifts along with Russian fairy tales and fairy tales of Russia—came to visit her parents and left her starry-eyed. Years later the same man returned to sweep her off her feet. Her love affair with the Traveller, as she calls him, transformed her life and fueled an abiding fascination with Russia and Russian culture, one that would lead her to dingy apartments reeking of cabbage soup and piroshki on the outskirts of Paris in the 1960s, and to Siberia and beyond.

Book Performance in a Time of Terror

Download or read book Performance in a Time of Terror written by Kanchuka Dharmasiri and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of five Sinhala plays, translated into English, which were written and performed during the most violent phase of modern Sri Lankan history. Ranjini Obeyesekere’s translation of these five well-known and celebrated plays by K. B. Herath, Prasannajith Abeysuriya, Dhananjaya Karunarathne, Prasanna Jayakody and Rajitha Dissanayake highlights and explores the dynamic period of Sri Lankan theater and performance arts in the 1980s and 1990s. The plays in this collection offered a political space for criticism, introspection, discussion and protest during a time of suppression of voices, political violence and terror. Audiences flocked to the theater to watch plays produced by talented dramatists and artists who were experimenting with forms and themes under extremely challenging circumstances, shoe-string budgets and strict censorship. Kanchuka Dharmasiri’s introduction to the volume further details the history and socio-political contexts of the theater of this period, discussing themes such as dissent, identity and the brutal power of the state. She also looks at the unique formal elements employed in these plays as well as their influence and reach. This volume is a significant addition to the growing corpus of Sinhala literature in translation. It will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of literature, performance studies, cultural studies, and the politics and history of Sri Lanka.

Book The Mind s We

Download or read book The Mind s We written by Diane Gillespie and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a journey to the theoretical roots of human psychology, Diane Gillespie defends the concept of contextualism in a field in which mechanism has prevailed. Gillespie explains both theories in a historical overview of cognitive psychology and then contrasts them in three chapters on visual perception, memory, and categorization. She clarifies the inadequacy of mechanism as the sole model of cognition by including narratives based on her own life that focus on the dynamic ways we interact with the world. Providing a subtheme of contemporary concern, Gillespie argues that a psychological theory open to everyday contexts has important implications for women, whose perspectives have been underrepresented in the literature of cognitive psychology. She does not posit contextualism as the next exclusive viewpoint but suggests instead a pluralism with no one viewpoint overshadowing the others.

Book excerpt: “I first time I saw the man who became my headmaster was when he rode his motorcycle past our house in Tyosa. He was a huge, dark, hairy man with big eyeballs that looked like they could see through anything and often saw through everything. His eyes were so frightening to me that I always trembled whenever he turned them on me. Not only were the eyeballs big, he had a way of baring them in the most frightening manner when he focused them on you. Older people said his father Akut was nicknamed Akut the owner of frightening eyes for pretty much the same reason. His eyeballs were said to be so big as to scare away birds whenever he entered the forest. Some people said they scared away chickens too. So he was called Akut the owner of frightening eyes.... “But Akut’s son was headmaster and no one dared pass his nickname to his son though he had passed his frightening eyes to the son. No one dared sing songs behind him the way children used to sing behind Akut his father…” Passing through and growing up in school with Akut’s son as the Headmaster, and what it took to grow up in a closely-knit community through the eyes and memory of a pupil is a story that has to be told, the story of any pupil. And this is the story…

  • ISBN : 0244459282
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book The Mess in My Head written by Robert N Stephenson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of short stories captures a time when the author was at his worst with clinical depression (bipolar) and the medication levels were not quite right. All of these stories display more a state of mind rather than any visionary insights into the conditions and how the author dealt with problems arising from the illness. The interesting thing would be what was being imagined at a time when the mind wasn't working in a positive or even productive fashion. It isn't impossible to write fictions when your mind is in crash mode, but it is difficult. This collection features strange stories, mad stories, visions that are macabre and insights that are touching. 500 000 words were written in the short story format and while some are available in other collections, all these are unique to this collection. The Mess in My Head is a journey and one that unexpectedly delivers on its promise. To be strange.
