Book excerpt: From Kitty Hawk to the jumbo jet and from the lunar landing to interstellar probes, American poets in On the Wing explore the phenomena of aviation and space flight. Edited by Karen Yelena Olsen, this balanced yet buoyant anthology collects 116 poems. The six thematic sections celebrate past achievements and the sensuous joys of flying ("Impulse of Delight"), revel in the vistas opening to the airborne traveler ("Worlds Above, Below, Within"), ponder the impact of air travel on everyday life ("Airplane Visions, Airport Truths"), outline the sinister role of the airplane in war ("Angle of Attack"), lament the shadow of airborne tragedy ("Icarus Falling"), and explore the mythic dimensions of space flight ("Space Odysseys"). Olsen's introduction traces the prehistory of flight literature from the Bible to the 19th century and sketches the evolution of 20th-century response, from initial exuberance to a more nuanced and probing examination of aviation and aerospace as they affect our lives. The book includes a short history of flight in the U.S. The product of a lifetime's passion for both flight and poetry, this collection will deeply interest those who have never been on a plane--and delight those who have.

Book excerpt: Lorca's Drawings and Poems focuses on the act of reading Lorca's drawn or written texts and how the reading of one genre can inform the reading of another. Throughout the study, poetry and drawings from every period of Lorca's career are examined. Selected drawings are interpreted; next, poems contemporary to those drawings are analyzed in their light. In chapter 1, a common poetics is extracted from Lorca's comments about his drawings and writing and placed in the context of the literary and artistic movements of his day. The evolution of the literary criticism that examines Lorca's drawings is traced and reviewed. Lorca's texts are examined from varying perspectives in the chapters that follow. In chapter 2, drawings and poems from 1927 to 1928 are analyzed in light of Lorca's participations in artistic and literary movements during those years. Texts from each period of Lorca's work are read in chapter 3 in a study of Lorca's employment of space and his depiction of setting and subject in his drawings and poems. Such a chronological approach allows the reading of Lorca's texts to reveal the evolution of his aesthetics as well as to identify the imagery and techniques that remained consistent throughout his career.

Book Cinepoetry Imaginary Cinemas in French Poetry

Download or read book Cinepoetry Imaginary Cinemas in French Poetry written by Christophe Wall-Romana and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinepoetry analyzes how French poets have remapped poetry through the lens of cinema for more than a century. In showing how poets have drawn on mass culture, technology, and material images to incorporate the idea, technique, and experience of cinema into writing, Wall-Romana documents the long history of cross-media concepts and practices often thought to emerge with the digital. In showing the cinematic consciousness of Mallarm? and Breton and calling for a reappraisal of the influential poetry theory of the early filmmaker Jean Epstein, Cinepoetry reevaluates the bases of literary modernism. The book also explores the crucial link between trauma and trans-medium experiments in the wake of two world wars and highlights the marginal identity of cinepoets who were often Jewish, gay, foreign-born, or on the margins. What results is a broad rethinking of the relationship between film and literature. The episteme of cinema, the book demonstates, reached the very core of its supposedly highbrow rival, while at the same time modern poetry cultivated the technocultural savvy that is found today in slams, e-poetry, and poetic-digital hybrids.
